The so-called threat has killed four people and harmed 10 or so others. Far from an epidemic. It is the fear, which you are feeding, which is the epidemic which you can help control by being more responsible in your writing. Also, so far, only one case of diphtheria has been suspected. What America needs is a level head to get back to normal, not the hysteria which your paper continually feeds into. Craig Appel San Francisco * * * Your " Review and Outlook " piece, " Immune to Reason " , while well-intentioned, left out critical information, including the fact that the absence of evidence in this and many other vaccine-related issues does not mean the notion has been disproved. The problem really is, what does one trust - vaccine manufacturer generated or influenced reassurances, or the mounting evidence from countless parents who insist their children's declines in mental and/or physical health occurred because of vaccination? If one opts for the parents, then the push will be for unbiased research, conducted by those who have no vested interest in the outcome. Only then might we have confidence in any reassurances, were they to result.
