Volunteers test new anthrax vaccine

A new anthrax vaccine designed to combat bioterrorist attacks is being

tested on humans, it was announced yesterday.

Although it was developed at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory

in Porton Down, Wilts, clinical trials are being carried out in the US on

115 volunteers.

The two-shot vaccine is designed to give protection from anthrax spores and

can be effective even if administered shortly after exposure.

It is hoped it will replace the existing shot which needs four doses over

six months.

The vaccine will eventually provide a stockpile for civilian emergencies in

America and the US government has requested three million doses. The

ultimate aim is to have it licensed in Europe within five years.

Unlike the current vaccine, which requires the handling of live anthrax

bacteria, the new vaccine is based on a purified anthrax protein.

DSTL has developed the vaccine with Avecia, the biotechnology company, which

has been awarded a £40 million contract by the US government to manufacture

three million doses. Avecia said it will bid to provide a further 75 million

doses.

Earlier this week, VaxGen, a Californian company, reported promising results

of a clinical trial on 100 volunteers of another vaccine designed to induce

antibodies that neutralise anthrax toxins but which cannot cause infection.
