Hi I'm I am 20 yrs old and a junior at the University of Iowa. I have bpes.I had my first surgery while in kindergarten. Since then I have had a few. One was in high school and I ended up missing a lot of school because therecovery took longer than expected. The last one I have had was in May of myfreshman year of college. That was 2 years ago so it would have been May of2002. Dr. was my surgeon he does a really good job and he's a niceguy. It just takes a lot of time and energy to go all the way to Utah fromIowa. The hardest part though is recovery, especially when you want to go outwith your friends when you get back but you have two black eyes. Anyway mymom wanted me to post this message, so I will give her a shout out

I remember being teased in 6,7, and 8th grade, but earlier than that i don't remember. My oldest son is in the 5th grade and he never talks about kids teasing him. My youngest is in kindergarten and hasn't had the surgery to lift the eyelids, and i know that some 2nd grader was teasing my middle son who is also i 2nd grade, saying that at least he doesn't have a brother who is blind. I think that it would be worse in the elementary grades because kids at that age don't really care about what that say. There are alot of kids who aren't rude, but even up through his high school they can be cruel. I work for the junior-senior high school and i hear alot of things. I feel sorry for my kids when they start school up there. Nobody will like them because i won't keep my mouth shut if i hear people talking about my kids. I have cousins, and nieces and nephews that go there and when i tell someone that i'm their aunt or cousin they quickly shut their mouth.

Hi all...Just had a question...Out of all the people who have had surgery, Did you get teased even after you had the operation?....What did you find the hardest age was to go through?...I had a real down day yesterday all becasue of a girl who was about 12 or 13!...I took my son to his pre entry visit to school, (he doesn't have blephs)...We were in the playground and all the other school kids were on a break also, I was holding my son Ethan (who has blephs) and this girl was steering at him, but then she was calling her friend over and telling her to look around at him, so they both turned and just steered at him!!! I was almost frozen to say anything, and it just ruined my whole day, because I wish I had said something like...*Do you have a problem with my baby!!!*...but I didn't...Its one thing when people steer at him, not that , thats exceptable, but when they try to get there friend or mom or whoever to take a look that really hurts me, He isn't a side show to steer at! When this happens I cry and wonder how I am going to cope when he comes home and tells me he is being teased! It will hurt soooo much, We look at him and don't see it, and wonder how *different* he really looks to other people judging by there steers! To us he is just soooo darn cute:) Just wish that other people could see that instead of his eyes! I guess I just wanted to know is anyone got teased even after the surgery!...Please let me know...thanks:)

:( Kids are so cruel ha!...We live in NZ, my husband is american:) I met him in Hawaii 12 years ago!...We moved back here to NZ 3 years ago now, I am from here, We have a lot of asians that live here, and they get hassled a lot:(...I just remember from hearing kids in school! about there eyes and stuff, I can't imagine what they will say about my wee one who has eyes smaller than them, I think if we were still in Hawaii he wouldn't get steered at as much as there is a wider culture of people, a lot of filipinos there, who all have more exotic eyes, I think they would think he was different in a cool way:)...
