I have had a lot of problems since. I know from the research, many people had have success. But I am the exception. A Pain Mgt. doc put mine in, left a tube in me and then the lead slipped out of place. A neurosurgeon went back in and placed the lead more secure but took out too much bone in my neck. I may have a spinal leak from what he did, but I had to undergo a spinal fusion in my neck because of the bone loss. I also have had fluid around one of my stim leads. It's been almost two years since this began and it has been a BATTLE!!!! The neurosurgeon did not want to fix my problem and fortunately after many months of bugging my stim rep, he helped me get in with a surgeon over 5 hours from where I live. This is who did the spinal fusion. For me, if I could have had this surgeon to begin with, I believe it would have been a success. But if I had it to do over again, knowing what I know, I would not do it. I have not used my stim in well over a year and a half. With the fluid there, when it's turned on, it's like a shocking feeling all over. Now I'm left with a foreign object inside me, no insurance and no money to get it out. Also, I have hard time getting over procedures given my RSD. I would recommend anyone getting these put in, to get all the facts and a very reliable surgeon. Get the pros as well as the cons. No one would tell me any stories of unsuccessful implants when I asked. I know they've helped others and might help you, BUT PLEASE get ALL the facts before proceeding. It can cost you more pain in the long run like it did with me. Thanks
Guest guest
I'm still waiting to hear about when I'll get my SCS. Didn't hear from any of my three doctors at all this week. Guest guest
Hey Margee.. What fears do you have, hon. I didn't see any previous emails regarding the stims...with problems. I will tell you my two experiences....I had my first one put in a little bit over 15 years ago...it made a huge impact in my life for the better....it was like a miracle had happened...I went into the OR hysterically crying from pain...and came out of the recovery room smiling and crying tears of joy. My pain went from a 7-8 to a 1-2. I was very young then, so even a 7-8 was traumatic for me and I didn't handle the pain as well as I do now, that I am a grown woman. For m y second one...about 8 years ago...it didn't help the pain as much, since the RSD is so much worse now. It did help some, but no where near as the first one is....so it is frustrating... I did not have ANY of the problems that I am hearing others having regarding getting an apointment with the reps or having the trial and surgeries done. I guess it differs from doctor to doctor, since alot of folks that I know with RSD also never had these nightmares of sceduling problems..e If I can be of any help or answer any questions..please call me @ (215) 783-9066 or email me @ _Kgavi@..._ (mailto:Kgavi@...) or _Eyes4Lenny@..._ (mailto:Eyes4Lenny@...) Guest guest
The important thing is to get the facts up front. Do not go in blind sided. There are no stupid question except the one you do not ask( remember our first grade teachers taught us that, back in the day LOL)The scs and rsd affect us all in different ways. I have had some problems with my scs( programers can work with you to reach the right levels) but I can not say do not get it, or get it. Ask us all in this group for QA's we are here to help give any information on what we have gone through. Again my biggest thing is ask questions, sometime they do not talk to you untill in the recovery room, but you are still coming out of having the surgery so your mind is not completely clear. I know I am here to answer anything I can for you. Just ask away. Try to have a light pain day Dawn > > > > Reading what everyone here is saying about SCS, kind of scares me > > right now. > > If there's problems with them, I don't want more problems in my life. > > I thought they were supposed to relieve you from pain, not add more to > > your life. > > > > I'm thinking now i may not want one afterall. > > > > I had a SCS implanted after a successful trial in August 2006. Guest guest
I know exactly how you feel! I got my scs trial in Aug, which worked wonderfully and I recently just about a week ago, got the approval for the perm scs. My surgery date is 11/03 and Im very excited. Just be patient, it sucks I know but they have to write reports and work on authorization from your insurance. What kind of insurance do you have? I got mine under work comp! > > > > > > Hey Girl!! > > > > > > It is great to hear from you!!!! > > > > > > how are you love? Guest guest
CONGRATS on being so close to getting yours implanted!!!! I have my psych eval that day. I have United Health Care. I asked the Medtronic Rep what was the usual length of time for approval and he said sometimes as fast as 1 week, sometimes as slow as 30 to 45 days. My understanding was that we have to get pre approval before we can even do the trial. I don't know if then we have to get approval again for the permanent placement or not. Another ???? did you guys have to get approval from your insurance twice? Once for the trial and once for the permanent placement? Thanks in advance Kim Re:Spinal Cord Stimulators I know exactly how you feel! Guest guest
I have United Health Care. This all was caused from auto accident, but the lady that caused it did not have auto insurance, we had to deal with our auto insurance and then UHC. No Disability, I didn't work long enough, was stay at home Mom most of the time. > > > > > > > > Hey Girl!! > > > > > > > > It is great to hear from you!!!! > > > > > > > > how are you love? Guest guest
I am super nervous about the surgery and Im sure you will be too. I will keep you posted on the post-op progress. I had to get approval for the trial and perm both seperatly, of course that is with work comp, not sure how it works with other insurances. > > > > > > > > Hey Girl!! > > > > > > > > It is great to hear from you!!!! > > > > > > > > how are you love? Guest guest
I am a current member and would like to know if anyone has had more than one implant and if so do you know why first implant didn't work
Guest guest
I have had 2 implants. The 1st worked great but the incision never closed n caused repeated infections. Had to have it removed before infections got to my spine n caused permanent issues. Guest guest
Hello! I have two implants....my first one was for my arm...that was done about 15 years ago. this one worked great! I had my second one done about 7 years ago...it only helped part of my foot...not the ankle where my RSD is the worst I have ever had in the 26 years that I have had RSD. I am possibly having another implanted as low as the doc can possibly get it. I forget where he put an epidural ...I had that in for about two months at home....it was wonderful pain relief. I am sorry though, I cannot remember the name where he placed it...I think it starts with a c...and it is not the coccyx. this is going to drive me nuts...when I do remember it, I will let you know what it is. LOL The reason that the second one did not help me as much as the first one is because this ankle is the worst RSD that my neurosurgeons and pain management docs have ever seen. I truly wish that I could hold a different title...but oh well. Due to this, the stim just jumped over the ankle and hit the foot. They are thinking that if they go into where they had the epidural, I might get alot more stimulation that works and takes at least the worst pain away. There has also been times where the stim would stop with the first one and the second one...all that it took was an adjustment of the wires, and everything was back to where it should be. Why...what are you experiencing? I am so glad that you wrote in for advice. There sure are enough of us to help you out. Take care! Gentle hugs to all Kathy G.
