This was passed on to me by a member of the facilty of Pitt University. She is

deaf and teaches American Sign Language.. She is the first deaf teacher of this

subject at the Universtiy of Pittsburgh. She has changed the formate of the

course to make it a Second Language there and also a usable language. In the

past students would pass the course but still not be able to communicate while

using signs. She has made that now available to all of the students that pass

her classes. Deb is amazing... She will be cringing as she reads this, I am

sure.. She is far too humble... Thanks you Deb for this following info...

read this in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette June 30, 2001

A Penn State University student died of bacterial meningitis last Monday. The

parents are upset and blame the university's health center for not recognizing

their daughter's illness. The health center misdiagnosed her as having a flu

and send her home when she came in the afternoon. She was in the early stages

which, according to the paper, exhibited the same symptoms as a cold or a flu.

In the evening, her roommates took her to the emergency room when she developed

a rash. They didn't mention a stiff neck but it is considered to be serious

and in the later stages. She died late in the night. She was immunized last

year. The chairman of the American College Health Associate's

vaccine-preventable diseases task force said that meningitis cases are hard to

identify and the vaccine " is effective against one strain of the menintocaccal

bacteria " .

In 1999, PSU had to vaccine 2,000 students when a student nearly died from

meningitis. Nothing was said what they had to do for the students who was

just exposed to last Monday;s student......

Sad and scarey.
