And actually, over the years I have read from multiple sources that our

agricultural products are not as health-giving as they were in years ago.

Something about the ground being depleted and the pesticides that are used

can also bind up certain nutrients which supposedly makes them unavailable to

the body. Bummer. So tis the plants themselves that need a vitamin

supplement (i.e. REAL fertilizer, not that chemical crapola and better

farming practices).

Kathleen for President. I'll outlaw all pesticide use in farming!

Kathleen

So anyway, my point was that even when we eat healthy foods, we may not be

getting all the nutrients that we think we are. Bummer.

the idea is to start them young if you start them on it they no know no

different.

I started young with Autumn, she ate great until she " knew better " LOL. I

tell her all the time, " When you were a baby you loved avocados, peas.... " But

no way will she eat them now.

I hate that term!!!! Are my kids the only ones that will eat what is put in

front of them???

Consider yourself lucky! I have friends who have kid's who try anything.

Autumn truly " tries " the food but hates it. I know it's not just copying kids

since she gags and her eyes water up. I remember being forced to eat foods as a

kids and wanting to throw up. All I ask is that she at least licks it. You

never know when she might like it some day.

That's great that you don't force foods on her. Man, I remember as a young

child my mom would make me sit at the table until I drank all my milk. Oh

how I hated milk!!! The only way I could swallow it without barfing was to

hold my nose as I would drink it. Why oh why, couldn't she have just given

me a calcium/magnesium supplement? I used to even throw it up when I was a

baby/toddler.

I read once that toddlers are evolutionarily adapted to be suspicious of new

foods, esp. vegetables -- in a hunter-gatherer society, this protects newly

independent kids from eating poisonous plants. I also once read that in

Chinese medicine, kids are considered to have a lot of the same kind of qi

that vegetables have, so they don't need to eat as much greenery as adults.

My two year-old is a pretty " good " eater (don't really like that term

either) but has definitely become more suspicious of new things. What can

you do? I remember being forced to eat zucchini, one of the few things I

hated, and regurgitating a huge wad of it all over the table. My mom never

forced me to eat after that!

I find that my daughter will eat vegetables cooked Asian-style, stir-fried.

She would never eat a boiled green bean, but put a little sesame oil and

tamari on it, and she just might go for it.

As Phyllis said, organic foods are more nutritious. This is a proven fact:

chemical fertilizers cause vegetables to absorb more water from the soil, so

that the nutrients are diluted. Try doing a little taste test -- see if you

can tell the difference between an organic and a conventionally grown lemon.

I guarantee you will be able to.

I shred or finely chop all kinds of veggies and hide them in spaghetti

sauce. carrots, zucchini, peppers, etc.

just an idea for the finicky eaters...Kathy

: I agree with all that but fussy eaters are hard. My daughter will not

eat any vegetable but carrots and maybe one or two kernels of corn or

peas let alone something like kale. I use a multi and even if the

tiniest bit is absorbed it's better than nothing.

Thanks again H-momma! A very good point. My first 2 were great

eaters when little (not alot of baby food, went right into whole) but

then when they hit 2-3 WHAMMO! Suddenly they " hate " everthing you

put in front of them and meals become a struggle for a few years.

It's a combination of asserting their will and dealing with textures

and such. Plus, YOU need to eat what you're asking them to. I tell

them they must try a good bite and then say no. I don't cook

different meals for them. I read once that it takes 20 - 30 times to

introduce new foods to kids and in my house, that's true. After

30 " yuks " (they still have to take the 1 big bite) they start to eat

it! My 3rd has down syndrome so there is a whole host of eating

issues there, but the same strategy applies. He is getting baby food

longer tho, cause he sometimes won't eat anything on the table. I

also give a childrens multi (all natural, read the lablels) and a

green multi supplement. I alternate them (1 one day and 1 the next)

and skip a day here and there. I think it makes a difference. I

take vitamin & mineral supplement too, why not them?

As for pancakes, we love multi-grain or buckwheat pancakes. They are

available in many stores. Look for a high fiber content and if they

are made w/ whole flour. AND I mix flax oil with maple syrup (put it

in a " cute " bottle, kids like that) approx a 1 part to 3 part ratio.

They don't know its there and they love it!

beans and peas, carrots, broccoli, kale, asparagus, salads and whole grain

brown rices and amaranth cereals and flour to make muffins and pancakes,

Flax seed oil and powders in their green drinks... Get a JUICER and make

whole fresh juices. Spend your $$$$$$ on things that will last to keep

yourselves healthy and strong for over 120 years...

Vitamin supplements are components of food without the other portions of

, are you aware of the dangers associated with using a microwave

oven? You may want to research it further. Kathy

: I don't know how old he is, but if you start making changes for the

better, you need to stick to it. He may have to go hungry for a meal,

but he won't dry up and blow away. I'd stick with it until he decides to

give it a try (give no other options). Believe me, he will try it if

he's hungry.

:

: I have three step children that come over every other weekend and we

get out a big tray and put all kinds of fresh raw veggies and dip on it

for them. They love it! We use the baby carrots, broccoli, zucchini,

etc. and they can't seem to get enough and they range in age from 14 to

7. We also fix all healthy meals while they are visiting. Sometimes we

make haystacks or burritos like this:

:

: HAYSTACKS:

: Put a layer of chips (Doritos, plain tortillas, or fritos) on a plate.

: Open a can of Vegetarian Baked Beans and spread it on the chips

: Spread some shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese on the beans

: Put it in the microwave to melt the cheese (about 1 to 1.5 minutes)

: Top with fresh veggies - raw spinach, tomatoes, onions, green peppers,

zucchini

: You can even top that off with ranch dressing or cottage cheese on

top.

: This is an all time favorite that is quick, healthy, and delicious at

our house.

:

: BURRITOS:

: Buy soft shells

: Open a can of Vegetarian Baked Beans and drain the juice

: Cook the beans in a bowl in the microwave for a couple of minutes

: Take a fork and mash the beans

: Use the beans on the shells and also fill with cheese and veggies

(like those listed above) also use ranch dressing inside.

: This one is even a bigger smash at our house.

:

: Learn to be creative and stick to your guns. Your kids will be much

better off if you are the boss and decide that they eat what is best for

them. Don't let them get picky, and certainly don't fix special foods

just for them. My nephew was raised just eating what he liked. His mom

didn't like a lot of things growing up and wouldn't feed them to her

son. He practically lives on cheese, summer sausage, and pizza. Needless

to say he is huge, he's 14 and is having chest pains. I've heard that a

lot of young kids are having heart attacks and strokes. I'd rather fight

them at the table than have to bury them later. Sorry to sound so

morbid, but I am a big believer in eating to live, not living to eat.

Hi ,

I would encourage anyone to transition their children onto a better diet. It can

be done. We the parents know what is best for them and they can learn to like

fresh fruits & veggies. One great way to get your kids to down the veggies is to

juice them. I highly recommend juicing carrots (cut off the tops and bottoms and

peel them first) add some celery and / or granny apple to the mixture and it is

sweet and delicious. For small children and babies you will need to dilute it

with water 50/50, but all children love juice and this will work. My

sister-in-law didn't think her children would drink it, but she mixed 1/2 apple

and 1/2 carrot and she said they just sucked it down!

I would suggest that you juice your own and use a Champion juicer or grinding

type. The spinning type of juicers don't get half the nutrition out of the foods

that the grinding types do. For more information and tips on feeding your kids

their veggies, please join our e-list for babies and children at:

rawfoodbabies

It is vitally important to protect your kids not only from outside sources (like

harmful vaccines) but from internal sources as well (the food they eat). I'm

thankful that I've been raising my baby on a fresh fruit & vegetable diet with

nutmilks, avocado, banana, apples, etc. He doesn't know any better and thinks

that is the only way to eat.

In Chinese medicine they are assuming that children are being breastfeed for

the first three years of their lives.. Children should be drinking much

breast milk for the first 36 to 40 months of their lives and therefore do

not have the correct taste comprehension of the older child... Kissing is

a form of feeding the infant a pre-chewed version of the table food that the

adults of their culture are consuming... Children in our times are sent off

to daycare are very young ages and many mother do not wish to breastfeed or

they stop nursing too soon...

Sit a toddler on the floor with a peach or a plum in front of them and a

dead rabbit... Which one of these foods do you think that the hungry baby

will reach for to place into their mouths... This is how you know what

children will eat and what things they are cautious about consuming...

Offer good food and they will eat....

Zucchini works well as a stealth veggie. I shred it in the food processor and

add it to spaghetti sauce, muffins, you name it. If you eat meat, add zucchini

to meatloaf. My kids (and husband) never know it's there. :)

Pumpkin is a great hidden addition to chili, vegetarian style or meat style.

Also good in muffins.

Also, if your climate allows, have the kids grow their own. Mine are more

willing to eat it if they've grown it themselves. We planted a spaghetti sauce

garden in the backyard: tomatoes, green peppers, yellow peppers, red peppers,

basil, oregano, chives, and a few other herbs. My girls love to pick their own

peppers and eat them raw.

I think a good analogy would be broccoli or cookies. I think most kids

would chose cookies. Hince the complications of trying to get your kids to

eat healthy.

Coaxing your kids to do something by using rewards is really controversial.

Most people say not to do that.

But it work for adults = you get paid if you show up for work and do your

job....I see nothing wrong with a system of rewards....be it a pat on the

back, a " good job kiddo " or what have you.

Carrot juice and OJ don't mix well (from what I've read). Try mixing a little

fresh carrot juice into his fresh apple juice. If you do it a little at a time

he won't even know the difference. Kids seem to love it. My VERY PICKY nephew

and neice are now on carrot juice because of this suggestion. They just took the

apple juice with a little carrot juice right down and didn't realize the mixture

kept getting stronger with carrot juice until it was too late.
