Guest guest
Coca Cola describes its efforts at: http://www.businessfightsaids.org/pdf/cocacola_africa_fact.pdf Within Kenya, Coca Cola says they have 1) Produced the television commercial for the National AIDS Control Council's Maisha Project, and donated radio airtime, billboards, and office space for Maisha (means " life " in Swahili). 2) Sponsored the " Heart and Soul " health education soap opera on TVAfrica in 30 countries. 3) Donated and transported three large storage containers converted into Rural Health Centres for distribution of hiv/aids information. 4) Delivered 150,000 copies of the AIDS education book " Bloom or Doom: Your Choice " to 28 school districts. 5) Produced the first 3 volumes of the comic book series " Nuru " , which " seeks to inspire quality relationships and positive sexual behavior. Guest guest
Does any one know if there are similar efforts by Coca Cola to help spread awareness in Ethiopia, Africa?
Guest guest
What has been the effectiveness of these initiatives? That is the major question. Coca Cola talks of working in collaboration with local organizations that work at grassroots level. This will certainly have a major impact to their HIV/AIDS programme. I'm sorry I have not visited the link yet. Does it mention some other local organizations it is implementing the programme with? After corresponding with their East Africa office in Nairobi I had the impression that something was fundamentally wrong with the Coca Cola HIV/AIDS programme if at all there was one in existence. Guest guest
Reading these postings especially the one by which reflects what Coca Cola has contributed sounds interesting and challenging at the same. Considering that Coca Cola did some efforts (though too minimal) is something significant and MAY MEAN AN ENTRY TO A greater INVOLVEMENT and eventually may develop into a deeper, more meaningful participation of a big private sector like Coca Cola. This may just be the start of it, immersing them into the wider development issues of HIV and AIDS, explaining to the officials of how AIDS may impact into their business in the near future should private companies remain complacent about the issues. Significant partnership with them may be done like some community based NGOs or the health ministry educating the company's rank and file including the officials, eventually developing an AIDS in the workplace initiative culminating into development of policies within the workplace of Coca Cola. Entry point to get their nod if they are not open enough about HIV/AIDS is perhaps family planning or the holistic approach to addressing reproductive health and overring the existing health services of the company. I know this is easier said then done but there is no harm in trying. Nenet L. Ortega Manila Philippines
Guest guest
I understand the Coca Cola has had minimal involvement with the Kenyan Community. I have a message to relay concerning this. All the Organisation in the world have a Social responsibility " Just as a large Company seeks to conserve it's asset and conserve it's future survival by re-investing part of it's profits, so it should seek to conserve and improve the social environment in which it does business, in the hope that it will be able to continue to do business in the future, preferably in a better environment that it has at present " Victor, Kisumu-Kenya
Guest guest
Dear All I dont think cocacola is seriuos about this HIV/AIDS programm.I have acousin here in kenya who was retired late last year because he was HIV+ and cocacola at some point even refused to pay his hospital bill at Kenyatta hospital in Nairobi. My question to them is how are they planning to assist the spouses of their employees on medical if they can not even help their staff?we dont want widow dressing on AIDS issues .Which org .are they collaborating with in kenya? I Only heard of cocacola planning to donate containers to be used as mobile testing centres by CDC .. I have written to cocacola Nairobi office several times on our programmes at the community level on AIDS but nobody has responded.cocacola should tell us what they are doing and where and with who? We never know ! The subject might be put on the agenda of one of the nexr Coca-cola Board meetings. e ActionAid Burundi
Guest guest
Hi Stan, How are things with you. Caro told me that she met you before you left. I have been a bit bussy. We were to visit you with Caro over the Easter Holiday, but it seems things have changes. I have been having some problems at home, and told Caro to organize for another day. Sorry for this. Hoping to get in touch with you soon. Regards --- tuvakoklub2 <tuvakoklub2@...> wrote: > >
Guest guest
Yes Victor, It is called social capital. Volunteer community workers are doing it all the time and any business that avoids investment in social capital is doomed. We have an example in Australia of Mc Houses funded totally by the golden arches. They are houses adjoining medical centres where children are provided with long term or acute crisis medical care. These houses are available to the families of such kids to live in next door to the hospital while their kids are in patients. It is quite an amazing investment and many people who benefit from being in close proximity to their sick children testify to its value. All funded by the Big Mac. So it does happen and credit where credit is due is good as is critique when the effort falls short. Guest guest
A slight clarification = I merely shared what Coca Cola claims it has done...I have no idea whether the corporation has really done all that.
