Len, could you please define " small " ? My son is six and his " package " is

approx. 1 inch to 2 inch long (visual - no yardstick used). What would be

normal vs. small? I went to your site but did not find anything specific to

size. Thanks! Kim.

Re: 9-10 Year Old Boys " Equipment "

Yes, a small penis is one of the characteristics of boys with DS.

OK, from the tip of the penis to the very base, a six year old can be

between 4 and 7 cm (1 1/2 to 3 inches).

In fact, this range holds steady for the age range of 5 years to the

beginning of puberty. Note that this data comes from Caucasians in 1943; I

can't find anything more recent.

Fran, this has been a problem with us since started wearing underwear at

4. He almost NEVER has accidents, but he too can hold it seemingly forever. It

is a tough situation because I found that everytime we were going out I would

make go, so he never got to the point where he had to tell us. Finally

this summer we had a few weeks before camp and I decided to go cold turkey and

stick close to home (no mall trips or playgrounds without bathrooms) and just

force him to tell me...in other words, don't take him to the potty on a

schedule. And it worked.

My suggestion is to take a week where you can stay home (or are only going

places where an accident wouldn't be an embarrassment to your son, like a

relative or friends house), pump him up with fluids (watermelon works great)

and wait until he tells you. He might have an accident or two, but my guess is

he'll rise to the occassion. Of course reward him wildly when he DOES tell you

he has to go.

Good luck!

Gail, I have to think this is a a ds thing! On another note, did you work

out Ted's school situation for next year? I know you home schooled him for

a good portion of last year and was just wondering what you were able to

work out for Ted this year.

I've heard the cheerio suggestion before, but I'm afraid he'll go after it

:-))) Gabe has no " gross factor " ! I tell him, " in the potty please! " but he

is too busy messing around and scratching his buns to pay attention......good

grief.....my girls were soooo much easier!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Toss in a cherio and see if Gabe will dunk it. I had heard this years ago

as a tip for getting boys to work on their aim. I think with , he

just learned because I always immediately would wipe off the wall or floor.

I'd yell, " in the water " ...lol. He only stands when I ask him to. He

prefers to sit.

Hi ,

I am in this group! LOL Ted has been in puberty for almost

2 years now. He will be 10 on Wednesday! Ted's doc assured

me (many times!) lol that Ted has all the proper equipment. I

thought he was seriously lacking as I do have 2 older boys!!!

<<and I'm just wondering if this is a DS thing >>

me too.

Hi Di,

That is interesting. If you were to look at Ted naked, you would only

see

his scrotum. His penis is so small and retracted (he is circumcised) but

he has

been peeing standing up for over a year now. He started by sitting and

we had

to use a special cup strapped to the seat that the county let us borrow.

We had

to send it back and forth between school and home. If it isn't a " Ds

thing, then

Ted sure keeps getting dealt the challenging hand!
