Guest guest
I have known about microboards for several years, learning about them when an ASA friend from Michigan told me she and her husband planned to do this for their ASD son. It sounded like the best idea to come along for my son, but nothing was happening in IL at the time. I had two questions when I first learned of microboards and, so far, no one here has asked them. This seems like the perfect opportunity. The first--can a microboard be begun for someone already in their 20s, or even their 30s? Or is this strictly for younger, teenaged children and once you age out of public education, you are no longer eligible? Since IPADDUnite! is a group focusing on the needs of our children as they age, this is of special interest to us all. I did not see any age restrictions but perhaps, it is understood, with a deadline in mind. I have not heard any stories of folks in their 20s or 30s or 40s so perhaps, you can share some with us. The next question is the one that concerns me the most and it deals with the make up and longevity of the microboard. I know my son's microboard would probably consist of his father, me, his two brothers and either one of two uncles. One of the uncles has adored him since he was born and the other is the father of a young child with ASD. Of course, my son, , would be a member of his own board. All of us have been active with him and my younger sons attended IEP meetings as they aged and became more aware of his needs. So my question is, what happens when one of us can no longer be a microboard member? Due to moving away (my sons), death or..........I want something in place that will continue after I am gone, with people who love and have my son's best interests at heart and are willing to work with him. I want something long term, that will be a structure for as long as my son needs it. Is there some sort of tool already in place within the microboard structure to evolve and adapt to the aging and changing of the board members--and the person? Thank you for being with us this week. I look with interest for your reply. Marie, co-moderator
