" WHERE: 2154 Rayburn House Office Building WHEN: Tuesday, July 18, 2000; 1:00 p.m. On Tuesday, July 18, the Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing regarding the ongoing use of mercury-based preservatives in children’s vaccines. Mercury-based preservatives are used in over 50 licensed vaccines to kill bacteria. Long-term exposure to low levels of mercury has been linked to mental retardation, cerebral palsy and nervous system disorders. In July 1999, the U.S. Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a joint statement recommending the removal of mercury-based preservatives from vaccines. On May 31, the FDA issued a letter to vaccine manufacturers stating that removing mercury from vaccines is merited. However, the FDA has taken no steps to date to ban this use of mercury. Testifying Tuesday will be representatives of the FDA, the EPA, and the Centers for Disease Control. Also testifying will be a panel of parents and experts in the field of mercury toxicity. The hearing is part of an ongoing Committee investigation into vaccine policy. Last month, the Committee held a hearing reviewing conflicts of interest on two key governmental advisory committees that make recommendations regarding vaccines. Numerous members of the committees were found to have substantial relationships with the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture vaccines. I attended the gathering immediately following the autism hearing in April with my daughter (she was a little over 2 years old). I have to tell you that I have an immense amount of respect for your dad. He is one of the few people that make me have hope in politicians. Amazing stuff, can hardly believe it really. And now mercury amalgam I think. Whatever next! It is like god is in the seat or running the show. Not one of the bad gods thank god.
