Guest guest
Hi Sindea.... I began going to a chiropractor when I was about 5 months along with my first son, and went about every 3-4 weeks. It was extremely helpful!! I don't know if it helped with the labor or not, but my first son was born in 5 hours total and my second son was born in 3 hours total! Also, I too began to take my sons shortly after birth, at about 3-4 weeks of age. Many children's neck bones can become " out of place " by just going through the normal birthing process. I absolutely swear by our chiropractor. However, I will tell you that I think you have to find the right one for you. We've been to 4 others before this one and although they were ok....they weren't right for us. I've been through both the Gonstead Method, which I understand to be " manual manipulation " with hands. Whereas the doctor I go to now uses that if necessary, but mostly uses an " activator " which is a small hand held instrument. My boys, who are now 3 and 5 love going there and getting to " ride " on the table! ha ha As for insurance, up until recently, it was covered 90%. However, with a recent change of jobs, chiropractic is not covered. We pay $25.00 per person per visit. However, if we recommend anyone we get a visit free....so we're recommending people all the time! To our family, we are willing to make this a priority in our budget because we believe in it so much. Our children are so healthy, and he is such a support when it comes to more of a natural approach to every health issue, and very supportive of us not immunizing! I also appreciate him because if there is an issue that he cannot fix, he will refer onto a doctor...he's not too prideful to do that. I found him through contacting our state's chiropractic association. For me, I was interesting in someone that would be excellent with my children, and they referred me to our doctor because he'd done extra training in pediatric care. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you in the remaining weeks of your pregnancy! Debi PS. After both of my labors I needed desperately to be adjusted and I found it very helpful to healing after having a child...I think it helped me to get back to my normal self. Guest guest
Sindea, I have been seeing a chiropractor since I was in an auto accident in 1998 (began in Oct.). I am now (and have been since April 1999) on what is called " maintenance care. " This means I go in about once a month or when needed. I am 36½ wks pregnant (with #3) and have found that this pregnancy has been much less 'uncomfortable' due to the chiropractic care I have received. All of my children have this deep seeded NEED to sit on my sciatic nerve in utero! My doctor has been able to alleviate that pressure and keep my spine aligned. The correct alignment of the spine has been shown to reduce labor and delivery times due to the fact that the baby doesn't have to follow a 'road map' to get out (the canal is straight instead of curvy!). I also plan to have my baby adjusted within a few hours of her birth. She's been in quite a pretzel-like position for the past few months! Something to consider...Make SURE your chiropractor has been trained in adjusting pregnant women. Our bones become more pliable during pregnancy (to allow our pelvis to relax and let said baby out) and the adjustment is a bit different than on a non-pregnant person. Good luck on your pregnancy! Virginia chiropractor- OT OK. I have been meaning to ask with all the wealth of knowledge on this list!-- What do you all know and think of the various type of chiropractors... I am 20 wks pg and since I had my son 4 yrs ago have been in 4 car accidents (almost a hobbie, lol!)... And anyway, have you guys used them to help your pg and labor? I do not want to go and be dependant for life, ya know? Sindea www.hurphotography.com <http://www.hurphotography.com> What I have been taking instead of prenatal vitamins is called Juice Plus. It is a whole food supplement recommended by our chiropractor. Anyone heard of it? Guest guest
Thanks Virginia! Does your ins. cover going to him/her? And is he a specific kind of chiropractor? Guest guest
Sindea, The insurance I have covers up to 20 visits per year (Yea!). However, when I first started going, I had no insurance. I spoke with him (not his office staff - who are wonderful, but when it comes down to money, I go to the source!) and we worked out a payment plan. He made it so I could see him 3-4Xs per week and not end up in the poor house! It is my understanding that most will work with you to make a plan that meets your needs. Also, (just assuming here) since you are not in constant pain, you won't need to go NEARLY as often as I did, thereby reducing your cost significantly. As for a specific type of chiropractor, I had never given it much thought before you asked. I just got off of the phone with him and this is what he told me. He practices diversified chiropractic and the Technique. I haven't the foggiest clue as to what that means exactly, but he is the most " hands on " chiropractor I have been to. I actually went to one that " talked " to my pain - OH, GET REAL!!! Anyway, I SWEAR by him and he treats my two children as well (the most healthy kids on the planet [well, most of the time anyway!!] ;} ) Best wishes! Virginia chiropractor- OT > > > > OK. Guest guest
Our chiroprator deals only with pierce therapy which kind of means he taps on the bones of the neck area and does not push on the back or twist the neck side to side. I get much better results from him rather than the traditional chiro. Diane chiropractor- OT OK. Guest guest
Sindea - My mother has been going to a chiro. for years. I didn't go until I was about 8 months along. OMG - did it make a difference! I could sleep again! I've heard that if you have back labor (and you can bet your blueberry muffins that I did) that being adjusted in between contractions helps...but who is thinking about that????????? Anyhow, my midwife and my doula took one of those massager thingies you can buy with the balls and the bumpies and ran it really hard over my back...that seemed to help. But, I would definitely suggest going to a chiro. once a month or so (depending on how you feel) while PG...it made all the difference for me! Guest guest
Well, I am going in for a consultation tomorrow (or today rather- if I can ever fall asleep) with a local chiropractor. Get this- my ins. only covers chiropractice care up to age 21! Strange... The one I am going to see practices all forms of chiropractic care. They said that they do not use just one method, since each person is different! Sounds good to me~! I had horrendous back labor. I will not bore all with the details- but am determined to make this last pg a better one (esp. now that I am not puking 24/7)... Thanks all for your ideas and help. I know this is off topic- but it is hard when it is all somehow health related not to seek ideas from each other! Sindea www.hurphotography.com > My mother has been going to a chiro. for years. It usually occurs when they are posterior. There are a lot of ways to help them to turn. If you don't know them, ask, and I'll help you out. I'm sure you've probably heard how. ANyway, first baby was 27 hours, all back labor. It was terribly hard. He had meconium, little of this, little of that. All worked out well, I still got to bf within about 45 minutes, once they got him suctioned. My second baby was a total of ******5***** hours!!! Yippee. My water broke that night as we were laying in bed. (brady then 18 months had just fallen asleep inbetween us) and we called the midwife who told us to mosey on in when we felt like it. We went in. Things progressed pretty quickly. I remember after about 2 hours of being there sandy told my mom to call anyone we wanted to be there. I thought, " but we've only been here a few hours! " Labor is so much different with a normal birth rather than back labor. The whole way through,we talked and laughed an shared stories between contractions. There is always a " break " . With my first it was 27 hours of intense pain. Ican't say abbey's birth was " painful " It was just hard work. I worked through each and then got a break. THe last 20 minutes before pushing got pretty hard. but, It seems like nothing looking back. Also, have you considred a Bradley class? Or at least read the book. It helps so much!!! I'm a moaner rather than a breather and with bradly that's ok. Rather than with Lamaze where you aren't suppsed to moan. LOL My sister walked in at one point and said, " breathe " I won't tell you waht I told her. It would offend most of us. Actually that was with my first. My second I was in cheerful spirits and when she told me to breathe I just told her moaning is a perfectly ok form of labor management. So did the midwife. Anyway, point is, You probably won't have back labor again. I went through my whole second pregancy so scared I 'd have another posterior! Guest guest
There is hope!!! Well since Raiden was 6 wks early, who knows if he would have eventually turned on his own if he had not been so early! But it was also at a hospital and the nurse and I did not get along at all (long story short- she had seen me for my pre-term labor and since I had a bit of pink cheeks from taking walks during the summer- she YELLED at me and said I caused the pre-term labor cuz I went in the sun), and she was angry that I did not want any pain meds, so she kept telling me to stay in bed. I did not listen much <g>.... I also figure that everything I do to have a healthier body and less stressed body this time will help my labor...
