Never had any cats. Am I the exception that proves the rule??

Re: Re: thanks

The cats may just be like the observation that all people who died of cancer drank water before getting the cancer. On the other hand, there are diseases people get from drinking water. There may be something only a few cats carry. Something that is hard to get from a cat but possible if conditions are right. Just as lot of people are around domestic animals but very few get rabies from them. One thing that could help rule the cats out is if there are enough people that can say they had little or no contact with cats yet they have achalasia. But, as for me we had a lot of cats around when I was a child.JerryVicki Roth wrote:>Seems like half the world has cats--hard to believe that there wouldn't be>more folks with achalasia if there is some cause and effect relationship>here!

Well I hope there is no connection. And I doubt there is any connection. I

hate to think of any new readers of this list coming into these cat

messages and thinking we know more than we do. But if there was a

connection to cats, never having any cats would not mean you never had

contact with one.

Hi--

Bill, I doubt you are the exception that proves the rule, cat-wise! (I'm

guessing that cats don't cause achalasia--the " proof " seems to be the lack

of achalasia in the general population, given that cats and humans have

lived in close proximity for thousands of years.)

I think we are all eager to understand this disorder better, so we're kind

of looking for overlapping experiences in our lives. We could probably

find a zillion variables we've had in common, some of them related to

achalsia (like trouble eating bread, for example), but others that may be

just happenstance.

This is why epidemiologists have such a difficult time tracing the

incidence and prevalence of various disorders, I guess.

My question du jour for the group today is the following: How does this

disorder affect your work life? Does it make a difference in how well you

get through the day? Have you ever had to curtail your career in response

to this disease? Or have you found good ways to continue working AND

manage achalasia-related problems at the same time?

Hint: my too-often followed work strategy is NOT a good one, I've

decided, that is, I tend to simply not eat or drink much when I have a lot to

do at work. Since nutrition and hydration aren't exactly optional

activities, this " strategy " of not ingesting much stinks!

The obvious other answer is for me to eat and drink in small amounts, but

when you have GERD, that just means you are constantly making yourself

feel lousy throughout the day by eating.

H'mm. Am I crabby today or what?? Thanks for listening to me

vent!

When I find more that *don't* rely on artificial sweeteners I'll send them

I will pray and hope for a mighty successful surgery

next week. The reward is freedom.

I was "slightly" a vegetarian when I had my myotomy.

I drank vegetable juices and smoothies for the first

few days. Then progressed to salads and cooked foods.

When I was no longer nervous.... I had a steak and potato dinner. YUM.

Ohhh the possibilities!

Hi Donna. Please stay with the idea of eating slow. I was on the Nissen Diet for two months. You go from two weeks of liquid diet and progress to soft foods. I had my surgery on Aug. 7th. and I just started eating raw baby carrots. I still have to drink with some foods. I have a glass of water with me at all times. The surgery is not a cure, but it is wonderful to be able to eat again. Yesterday, I had trouble getting some applesauce down. It came back up. This was after eating an egg salad sandwich and some bean soup. I know that I will never eat the way I used to eat again. I will learn to live with this way of eating. Small bites, slow eating and thanking God it goes down at all.

You will be just fine. It is a new way of life, but it could be a lot worse. Now we can help others. That is the best part. Being there for others. God help us all. Bev in SC.

Hi Cary -

Thanks for noticing my loss so far. Yes I do journal. It varies as to what

exactly I do though. Some days I write in it. Other days I print out/copy

articles information I find. Other times it is emails that send or receive. I

also belong to the Clubhouse and find things there frequently.

It is all about seeing those little bright lights, those ideas that suddenly pop

up from no where! Those little gems that help me to understand. I gather them

and keep them.

Then when things start getting me down - as they do with all of us - I sit back

and turn the pages. I start at the beginning. I read it all. The early days

of my journal were much harder for me. That is where I let it all out and that

was painful. But worth it.

To keep myself going and to remind myself of how far I have come - well that is

easy really. I use the scale, or course, but I now only get on it once a month.

That is my official weigh in. The rest of the time I use my foodmover, measure

my food and " know " if I am doing okay. I don't worry about the numbers any

more.....I only worry about how I feel.

The other thing I have done is to take my measurements. Again, I take them the

first of every month and have since the first day of my new life. I have lost

35 inches since I began this journey, and I can tell you where they all came

from.

But most important of all, I have gotten to know my body. I have spent a lot of

time since the very first day, looking at myself in a mirror. Getting to know

this person. Now this might sound weird to all of you.....but I have done this

in the clothing God gave me - meaning naked.

I have learned the bumps, the lumps, the rolls, the marks, the scars, the

mountains of fat.....I have learned it all. I know what is there. I know what

it looks like and what it doesn't look like.

My reason for doing this? I knew I had to learn to accept and love the person I

WAS ...... before the person inside of me could be set free.

I think more than anything this is what keeps me going. You see I am okay with

what my body WAS, what it IS and what it WILL BE!

Because I know where I started, I can see the changes that are happening every

day. I can see the eating healthy paying off. I can see the exercise paying

off. And because I can see it....I can believe it. And that makes this entire

journey possible. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.

Now the journey isn't going super fast. It has slowed to a halt these past few

months. But I am okay with that. I am at a different place now then I was

before. In the early days I needed the pounds to disappear quickly...and they

did. But now I just need to know that I am doing the best I can. That I am

treating myself better....eating healthier....exercising. That is all that

matters these days.

So my advice to everyone? Get to know who you are. Truly know it. Not what

your mind tells you...but what your eye, your hands, and experience tell you.

Sorry if this rambled on and on. I tend to get carried away about the things

that have worked for me....and as you can tell, this is one of those things!

Take Care,

Oh Penny,

What a wonderful daughter. I know your Dad appreciates it. I know

he appreciates your strength as well. Spend as much time as you can

and always let him feel loved. What a hard thing. I wish I could

have spent more time with my Mom, I'll forever be saddened by that.

I'm so sorry, it is a hard road you have in front of you, but you

will survive it. I know we will all be here for you! Trust me, the

hurt fades (slowly). We're here for you Penny!

Penny,

When I read your post, a thought came to me about something that might be something to share with your dad. Perhaps you could go through old family photos and make a memory book or scrapbook that you could look at together. It's always a joy to look at pictures of time gone by, and maybe that might even help bring some sense of love and the power of family getting us through these painful times.

Hi - Just wanted to add my congratulations too. Like the old saying goes" the squeaky wheel gets the oil". That is an amazing turn of events eh! Whatever you did worked, but I'll bet you never thought you would hear from him again!!. Anyway I am happy for you that you will have the best surgeon doing the job for you after all and I hope and pray the results are as good as mine. I will be five years post-op on November 5th at which time I will see Dr. Finley for my annual check-up. We are off to sdale Arizona for the month of October. Leaving on the 1st, otherwise I would have popped up to see you at VGH. Nevertheless I will be thinking of you. Good Luck - I am sure everything will go great.

All the best and take good care of yourself.........., Vancouver BC.

Thanks

Thanks Maggie, Biancka, Rita, Jan and Sandy for your replies. I really can’t believe that this day is finally coming. I had my mind prepared for the wait, but my body was saying NO WAY!! I can’t believe that in a week from now, I will be one day post op… wow. Let’s all hope all goes well, and according to schedule… they have a history of bumping people here…

I think I will be able to keep up to date on things around here. Work can’t miss me, so they are lending me a laptop to work from home. How thoughtful…L !!! It will be great to have for this type of thing though! I don’t want to miss out on any one elses news!

OUCH! When we had our frozen pipe the contractor (This guy was more like

our handyman - he did it all) got the pipe defrosted, and told us where

to go and what to buy to insulate the exposed pipes ourselves. We paid

less than $20 for all the insulating material and saved hundreds by

doing it ourselves. Thank goodness anything prone to freezing was within

easy reach. When my dad bought his first house 27 years ago and had a

frozen pipe, half a wall had to come down to find and fix it. What a mess!

Your story is all too true for most of us. Hang in there!! And most importantly keep searching for answers. I am amazed at how much I have learned about this disease just since 2 years ago and I fully credit every member of this group, because the answers that I could not get from the Doctors, I got right here in this family of fellow Achalasians. I hope you are still feeling somewhat better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Shelia and Tyler

I will never forget after my surgery, my first big drink of ice cold

apple juice!! Straight from heaven it was! I never have to drink warm

water anymore, a glass of cold water before bed is what I have, just to

make sure there is nothing lingering around! Your time will come too!
