Hi :

My son, Evan, 6, DS, has had this constipation problem. It started when he

was about 2-3 years old. After battling it for about a year and a half, the

gastrointerologist placed him on a new prescription called MiraLax. It comes

as a powder and it has NO taste whatsoever. All you do is mix a teaspoon to

a teaspoon and a half into the morning and nighttime feedings at first. They

drink it and never know it was in their drink. It doesn't thicken or change

the taste at all in anything that you put it in. Eventually you can drop

back to only one dose a day (we now only use one teaspoon in the morning

juice) just to keep him regular. Believe me, we had the crying/screaming and

the bleeding when it came to " poopy time. " I don't envy you at all. It is

so hard to see our babies suffer. MiraLax is good stuff, and here it costs

about $17.00 for the smaller size bottle of it, or $34.00 for the large size.

Such a simple solution to a problem that we fought for what seemed forever.

I hope your pediatrician will prescribe it for ny.

I am sorry to hear this. Hugs to you and I hope you are doing well. Ted

was never constipated...in fact quite the opposite and rather loose. I hope

you hear from someone with helpful advice.

Hi. Constipation has not been a problem for us, but several of the families

in our parent group have faced this issue. They all swear by Senekot.

You might ask your doctor about this product. I think that you can get it

over the counter. Darcy

Hi! :

My daughter had constipation when she was in her first

two months old and when I started giving her solid

food. She was 7-month-old then. I took an infant

massage class. The instructor taught me how to help

your child's constipation. This is how she taught me.

Let the child on her or his back, and use your hand

gently massage her or his tummy (around the belly

button). The motion is clockwise. IF the child has

diarrhea, and do it counter clockwise. She doesn't

have constipation since I gave her massage. I think

the massage itself won't hurt him at all. It may be

worth a try. Good luck.

I know of a child who was diagnosed with Hirschsprungs at 18 months. He was

breast fed up to a year and as long as he was the constipation was rare, but

as soon as he went to a regular table food diet, no mommy's milk he started

having major constipation. Dr made same type of recommendations, plus prune

juice that your doc has given you. It took them 6 months and the threat of a

lawsuit to get the docs to retest this child for HD (he was tested as a

newborn when it took several days for him to produce his first bowel

movement)--unfortunately the radiologist hadn't read the first film right.

Ask your docs about testing for HD if he continues to have problems.

You have to be very careful with this - constipation is when the stool is very

hard or difficult to pass. When I had my daughter she defecated when she was

born (literally during my c-section) and a few more times in the hopital. Then

when I brought her home she didn't go for 5 days. Then after that she only went

once every 5-6 days. My family was screaming at me that she was constipated,

and that I was making her sick by not taking her to the Dr and making her go.

She wasn't in any distress, wasn't pushing, and wasn't crying or acting any

different. After about 4 weeks of this (and my family and husband's family

giving me baby laxatives and screaming at me for not taking her to the Dr) I

finally took her and the Dr did a thorough exam and said her bowel sounds were

normal and she was not constipated. I talked to some of my teaches (I was a

student in holistic health and all my teachers were Drs or practioners in HH)

and they all said that breast fed babies *usually* go more often, but they can

also absorb everything up and not go for days at a time. She contunued like

this until my milk dried up at 3 months (I didn't know then how to get it back)

and then she started going once a day.

From a logical standpoint I don't think you can gauge constipation by how often

one goes, but the consitency and level of difficulty passing...

I could be wrong, but this is what my experience has been

: )

constipation

I read several times now that if you go only once a day that you are still

constipated. How many times a day is how often you should be going!

The line from that Batman movie popped in my head, " This town needs an enema! "

Just joking ofcourse.

I would agree with that . As a breastfeeding counsellor, I was

always concerned about babies who didn't have daily bowel movements, but it

is a fact that when they are exclusively breastfed, they can and do absorb

pretty much everything in the milk and therefore do not always have masses

of waste. Like you, I would say degree of difficulty and consistency of

bowel movements are the defining criteria. When a breastfed baby is having

easy bowel movements and the stool is soft, mustard-yellow, formed and not

offensive in odour, that baby is not constipated, even if it is only having

one bowel movement a week.

Once they start solids, or if they are artificially-fed, it is a different

matter, but while exclusively breastfed, no need to worry.

I must say that this would be one problem my family definately doesn't have.

Since birth, my daughter soils at least 3 to 6 nappies a day. I will be so glad

when she is out of them. And they are always the type that are the worst to

clean up. As for the rest of us, well no probs there either.

OK, so maybe breastfed babies are different. But I totally belive that the rest

of us should definately be going more than once a day unless you're only eating

once a day.

Can any one share with me what can be used to treat constipation?

I've tried lots of vit c and it didn't help.

Is it a symptom of under active thyroid which will subside once fully medicated?

Hi ,

Psyllium seeds with a lot of water. You must be properly hydrated

otherwise you will always be constipated whatever you take.

2 litres of fluid plus a day taken throughout the day. Not in one hit

as that can cause its own problems.

Kind regards,

Tina
