Re: After exercise - what is happening?

Hi Lynne,

I too had a PT, I did two or three sessions a week with him for two years,

mainly weights, resistance and some boxing. I was useless with the cardio and

over time I got worse and worse with the other stuff.... it took me longer

and longer to recover from training and eventually I gave up and had an adrenal

test with Genova. It showed that my adrenals were low all the time and this

would have made worse with training as it uses up the cortisol.

It's taken me a further 2 years to get the adrenals in good shape and I'm dying

to get back to training. However, I now have a heart valve (we think) problem,

which I'm getting looked at soon!!

Check your adrenal state..... worth nipping in the bud early... you might only

need NAX...... Waking up in the early hours is another adrenal state, it can

happen when adrenalin kicks in to rouse you if the adrenals haven't managed to

keep your blood sugar steady through the night. Are you starving hungry when

you wake?

well, I decide to treat myself to some sessions with a personal trainer. He

researched hypothyroidism and suggested I go down the weight training route

rather than cardio - also good for bones.

I get all those reactions to exercise - the feeling of heaviness, brain fog

worse again, and needing to eat a lot. However, my low thyroid problem is not

properly treated yet.

had my session with him. I wake up around 4.00am feeling strange with heavy

sensations - obviously I can tell I have used my muscles but without overdoing

it so nothing untoward there - but I end up with a heavy numb feeling in my face

for example and general tightness which means I don't go back to sleep easily.

'not-with-it-ness' which only go away to some degree at lunchtime (after a

healthy breakfast - say scrambled eggs and tomatoes - no bread) on a downward

scale depending on calorific input. Obviously there is not a lot of point in

exercising if you are going to eat a lot to alleviate the after effects so this

obviously is totally the wrong answer.

Take care Lynne and read about the changes in TSH, T4, fT4, T3,

fT3, RT3 and cortisol levels after moderate and intensive exercise. Read here http://www.nel.edu/26-2005_6_pdf/NEL260605A14_Ciloglu.pdf

You don't tell us how much levothyroxine you are taking or when

it was last increased or the results of any recent thyroid function test

results. If you have not had these done lately, please ask your GP to do

these, but to do a full TFT e.g. TSH, free T4, free T3 and TPO, Tg antibodies

too. We need to know whether the mainly INACTIVE thyroxine is

actually converting to the active triiodothyronine (T3) or not. It is T3 that

every cell in your body and brain need to make them function and NOT T4.

At the same time, ask for your levels of specific minerals and

vitamins to be tested to see whether any of these are low in the range. These

are iron, transferrin saturation%, ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3,

magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. It could be that one or more of these are

low in the range, meaning that the thyroid hormone is unable to be fully

utilised at the cellular level. When these results have been returned, post

them here together with the reference range for each of the tests done.

Also, with waking at 4.00a.m., have you considered that you

might be suffering with low adrenal reserve - this can happen with both

physical and emotional stress.

You could get the 24 hour salivary adrenal test done through

Genova Diagnostics to see where your cortisol and DHEA levels lie at 4 specific

times during the day. Check our FILES SECTION under the FOLDER entitled

'Discounts on Tests and Supplements' and then click on the 'Genova Diagnostics'

document.

What I would like to understand is what is going on in my body after I have had

In the morning I feel symptoms of foggy head and disconnection and general

'not-with-it-ness' which only go away to some degree at lunchtime (after a

healthy breakfast - say scrambled eggs and tomatoes - no bread) on a downward

scale depending on calorific input. Obviously there is not a lot of point in

exercising if you are going to eat a lot to alleviate the after effects so this

obviously is totally the wrong answer.

Could I have a thyroxine deficit? I have on occasions taken extra thyroxine

when I start to go off track. Is this something I should consider so I can

tolerate the exercise session or could it be I am short of a particular vitamin

or mineral perhaps?

This screams low adrenal reserve Miriam.

Or some other problem - maybe the hypothyroidism and the lead poisoning? Dr

Peatfield checks my adrenals periodically and they are OK, thanks.
