Guest guest
bio identical means that the molecular structure of the hormone is the same as endogenous production but this does not necessarily preclude synthetic (man-made) hormones from being bio identical. allegedly thyroxine is bio identical for example. i don't know for sure but i expect the nhs only hands out non bio identical hormone replacement ...e.g. premarin made from pregnant mare's urine which is natural but only if you are a horse. trish > > > Hi, > Can you get Bio-Identical hormones on the NHS? > For example, BHRT for: Thyroid, cortisol, Growth Hormone, Testosterone, > Pregnenolone, DHEA etc. > Or do endocrinologists only prescribe synthetic hormones? > Adam >
Guest guest
I thought that the reason drug companies weren't interested in marketing bio-identical treatments was because they couldn't patent them unless the formula was altered slightly. Isn't this the reason why they are against Armour (and similar), but promote synthetic versions? Therefore I assumed that the synthetic T4 in thyroxine must be very slightly different to T4 produced in the body. It might convert to a bio-identical form of T3 in the body - I don't know. Does anyone know the answer to this question? Guest guest
hi miriam as far as i know you are correct about drug companies not being able to patent something found in nature and that is why, for example in relation to the birth control pill, they based their adulterated pill on the natural contraceptive properties observed in the wild yam. > I thought that the reason drug companies weren't interested in marketing bio-identical treatments was because they couldn't patent them unless the formula was altered slightly. Isn't this the reason why they are against Armour (and similar), but promote synthetic versions? i don't think there is a synthetic version of armour i.e. one that contains all the hormones and calcitonin ...they promote synthetic t4 as the main treatment for hypothyroidsim because even though generally speaking it is dirt cheap to produce, when you have dirt cheap X millions of people and then add on the *cost of supply* the drug companies have a very steady cash-cow. > Therefore I assumed that the synthetic T4 in thyroxine must be very slightly different to T4 produced in the body. Does anyone know the answer to this question? i have been led to believe t4 was bio-identical but i'm sure i read something somewhere that indicated it wasn't exactly the same ...that is why i put *allegedly* ...i would also like to know the answer trish >
Guest guest
So I guess that a HRT hormones can be both Bio-Identical and synthetic. I may be starting HRT in a few months and from researching this it seems that the Bio-Identical option is best. Ideally, it would be nice to get these on the NHS. I heard about that horse urine thing too, from one of Suzanne Sommers Youtube videos. She's a huge proponent of Bio-Identical hormones. Adam bio identical means that the molecular structure of the hormone is the same as endogenous production but this does not necessarily preclude synthetic (man-made) hormones from being bio identical. allegedly thyroxine is bio identical for example.i don't know for sure but i expect the nhs only hands out non bio identical hormone replacement ...e.g. premarin made from pregnant mare's urine which is natural but only if you are a horse.trish
