Guest guest
Group: Can anyone provide guidance or experiences regarding taking lodoral and Coumadin? I understand that the iodine suppliments “may” interact with Coumadin. I have A Fib and thus am on a blood thinner, but I’ve also read that iodine suppliments can help get the heart back into the correct pattern. Thanks, Dave
Guest guest
Dave, My husband takes Coumadin -- not for A-Fib, but because he has a blocked vena cava. (It's scar tissue, so his condition is not going to change. He has taken Coumadin for about 35 years.) I was somewhat hesitant for him to start iodine, so I made sure that he started off VERY slowly and that he got his blood work done religiously every two weeks. As it turned out, taking iodine did affect his INR, and he had to adjust his Coumadin dosage ever so slightly. After observing these fluctuations, which tended to stabilize after a while, I came to the conclusion that it was probably NOT the iodine which was affecting his INR, but more likely it was the bromide detox effect from the iodine which was making it necessary for him to adjust his dosage of Coumadin with each increase in his dosage of iodine. I say this because after he remained at the same dosage of iodine for several weeks, then his INR would stabilize at that level, but whenever he increased his dosage of iodine, thereby triggering a new round of bromide detox symptoms, then his INR would be affected and he'd need to adjust his Coumadin dosage once again. I had checked for drug interactions between Lugol's and Coumadin and I didn't find anything significant, but we decided that it was better to exercise caution anyway. He has been on iodine since August, and he doesn't seem to be having anymore problems with his INR now, but we will continue to monitor it closely. I have no way of knowing for sure if the iodine is what affected his INR or not because there might have been other factors at play -- in particular, dehydration from the extreme heat (107*F-109*F) here in Texas this last August -- but we didn't want to take any chances. The main point I'm making is that if you decide to do the iodine protocol, then tip toe into it and keep a very close check on your INR at each dosage level. " Haste makes waste, " you know, so take it very, very slow and easy. With A-fib, you need to be very careful about NOT taking thyroid supplementation, according to one article by a CFS doctor that I read. I'll have to see if I can find that article for you in case you are considering taking thyroid medication. However, since you didn't mention that you are planning to take thyroid meds, then I'll wait until you indicate that you have a need to know because I'm not sure if I can find that same article again easily without spending a lot of time looking for it. > > Group: > > > > Can anyone provide guidance or experiences regarding taking lodoral and > Coumadin?
