Guest guest
Hello, My daughter has Hashi's and was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma. In July part of her thyroid was removed. She has been taking 150 mg/day of iodine, LDN and follows a gluten free, anti fungal diet. At the time of my last post her TPO was down to 64. I struggled in the very beginning with putting her on iodine for fear it might do her harm. Fear it would make her Hashi's worse. I was glad I chose to " encourage " her to take the iodine and follow Steph's protocol. I just wanted to share her latest TPO number which came in today. It is now 37 (normal: 0-34)!!! She started at 332 and last time it was 64. Last time her anti-thyroglobulin was 27 (range: 0-40). She started at 47. This time the test that was done was a little different. I asked for a comprehensive thyroglobulin: I thought I would get thyroglobulin and the same old anti-thyro I was used to - but it reported: anti- thyro of 5.4 (range <2 negative, >= 2 positive). Thyroglobulin 3.5 (generally less than 6 when patients are on withdrawal or after Thyrogen). % thyroglobulin recovery 92% (range: 85-115) Anyone familiar with this type of reporting? Thanks again, Have a blessed day, Luci > > > > > If I may I would like to add my two cents regarding Iodine and > > Hashi's. Guest guest
They are measuring actual thyroglobulin levels. That is a protein in the blood that is used in the thyroid hormone creation process. In normal thyroid cancer patients this should be zero or some docs say less than 5. It is used as a marker for thyroid cancer - but only when there has been a thyroidectomy followed by an RAI treatment is it relevant. High thyroglobulin levels can also be an indication of an iodine deficiency (if you still have a gland that is). That is what you are seeing - the measurement of the protein. Thyrogen is a synthetic TSH (rTSH) product that is injected into a thyroid cancer patient to give them the same effect as being taken off thyroid hormone for 6 weeks so that they can do RAI scanning. Congrats on the lowered antibody levels! Buist, ND HC Re: taking iodine with Hashimoto's Hello,My daughter has Hashi's and was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma. Guest guest
Thanks Steph! Basically measuring thyroglobulin levels is not relevant since she still has her right lobe? And checking actual thyroglobulin levels is only relevant if she had all of her thyroid removed? SO, if that same test were done on someone with Hashi's who did not have thyroid cancer (so had their thyroid is intact) she would see similiar readings? What throws me off is the anti- thyro of 5.4 (range <2 negative, >= 2 positive). Last time her anti-thyroglobulin was 27 (range: 0-40). The was the plain old test. I am wondering is this more " comprehensive " test telling me she is above 40 OR simply that there is a presence of anti-thyroglobulin levels? I appreciate your thoughts. Should I stick with the regular TPO and anti-thyroglobulin tests going forward? Lastly, she is taking 150 mg of iodine a day, based on the what we see here can we make any " guesses " that this is the right amount? Thanks again for all your help!!! Blessings, Luci > > > > > > > > If I may I would like to add my two cents regarding Iodine and > > > Hashi's. Guest guest
I don't know as that threw me a bit too. What lab ran the tests? Guest guest
Sorry didn't answer the rest. Yes the Tg test isn't really of value when you have part or all of your thyroid. It seems you are making progress so if it were me I would stick with what you are doing. Yes I would use the Tg Ab and TPO Ab in the future. Guest guest
LabCorp - it was their Comprehensive Thryoglobulin test... Guest guest
I just looked at LabCorp's information for healthcare practitioners about this test and it is specifically for thyroid cancer patients but it is not going to work the way they assay is done for your daughter who still has her thyroid. Stick with the other ones.
