Guest guest
Yes..been there...done that too. Also learned a sign of ear infection for is throwing up. After being put on the BRAT diet a few times in our younger years I learned not to mention that when I called. So far the Swine flu is not in our state but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. It frightens me no end. I would also take my children out of school. They talk about washing hands and coughing in elbows. Right. Schools are a haven for germs and bacteria. Guest guest
Hi Barb, I never thought of that. I knew that the ear scans weren't accurate. has small ears...even now...and seems to manufacture ear wax. That's another issue we battle constantly. I will definitely be checking out the oral thermometers and compare with the forehead scan. Thanks for your response. And, we did get an appointment for today thank goodness. Hopefully everything will be OK. Barb mom to (16ds) > > > Hi All, > > Called the doc this morning. told me his ear hurt but is OK > now. He said now it feels like it has bubbles. His temp. Guest guest
Well, considering it's in my neighborhood school AND Noah is not well versed in infectious disease control, AND I have a child with a compromised immune system who has been in the hospital six times for pneumonia (just from a cold) AND been on antibiotics that require me to sign a form saying, " ...we cannot give this patient these antibiotics unless you sign the consent form, since the medicine is almost as bad as the disease and it may kill him...sorry. " Yeah, I'm taking it seriously. Guest guest
I'm always scared where any flu is concerned granny. My parents can't take these illnesses anymore and so it scares me for them. It also scares me for....me. I don't spring back like I used to in my younger days either..lol.. Add to that worrying about and taking care of sick children. O man. Yep....it scares me. Guest guest
We live in , a suburb of N. Dallas. There was a confirmed case at the elementary school, about 1/2 mile from our house, and at my son's middle school yesterday. I think about it every time I visit the bank, grocery store, or anyplace else in the neighborhood. It's easy to be casual about it when it's just a " news story. Guest guest
Hi Barb, I know you already got this taken care of. I just wanted to mention one thing. As a pediatric nurse (and the mom of child with DS), a fever (or " lack " of one) should NEVER be a deciding factor on whether or not your child is seen. I mean to say it shouldn't matter to them whether or not he has what they consider a fever. If he has symptoms or you feel like he is sick, that should be enough! You definitely know your child best. I know it's frustrating when the doctors and nurses you talk to forget that. We are all getting overwhelmed right now with calls about the swine flu, so they may have been trying to keep people who didn't actually need to be there out of the office, but I'm glad you persisted and got an appointment. Hope he's feeling better soon! One more thing, those temporal scan thermometers aren't always accurate. But the number shouldn't be important anyway, if he feels like he has a fever to you, just tell them that and tell them the number isn't important (because it's not!). It's really only important for kids under two - and that's when you can still take rectal temps. I hope this helps. Like I said, I know you already got it taken care of. Just wanted to add my thoughts! Kristi Mom to - 4 and - 8 months (DS) > > Hi All, > > Called the doc this morning. told me his ear hurt but is OK now. He said now it feels like it has bubbles. Guest guest
Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in (hot vs cold) have any effect? Craig
Guest guest
Not to my knowledge. You have to dissolve the KI first, then the elemental (brown) iodine crystals. It takes a few days for the elemental to dissolve. -- On 30 Nov 2011 at 3:47, crgstef wrote: > Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in > (hot vs cold) have any effect? Guest guest
Craig: Do not use hot water at all. The iodine solutions the group recommends are typically safe, but all laboratory data about iodine specifies that iodine fumes, such as those given off from heated solutions, are hazardous. OSHA requires use of respirators and vacuum hoods in any workplace generating iodine fumes. Iodine Any solution strength up to about 7% will not pose a mixing problem in *LUKEWARM* *DISTILLED* water: dissolve the entire amount of potassium iodide in it first, stirring with a wooden or glass implement--KI should dissolve very readily. Then add the iodine crystals and stir again for several minutes. Those crystals will not dissolve quite so quickly (and the stronger the solution you're making, the longer the dissolve time), but it all will eventually break down. Leave it overnight, stir again. 24 hours should do it. Just to be on the safe side, don't be hanging over the beaker and breathing deeply while mixing. Better safe than sorry, say the Gods of the Copybook Maxims. Note: You can mix solutions stronger than 7%, but the less water used, the more dodgy dissolving the iodine becomes, and you may need to add a bit more KI to persuade the process along. I don't really recommend this. > > Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in (hot vs cold) have any effect? > Craig >
Guest guest
Craig: further to my previous, which apparently got a bit mangled at the end of the 1st paragraph, iodine solutions are also noted for a tendency to be degraded by heat and light, which is why the storage recommendations are for amber glass containers and dark, cool storage areas. Seems likely that using hot water could affect the storage life of your solution. Hope this helps. Regards, Megaera. > > Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in (hot vs cold) have any effect? > Craig >
Guest guest
Iodine fumes are not that bad. IMO, it is another scary myth about iodine. I have intentionally breathed them, by putting Lugol's into boiling water, to clear mucous out of bronchial tubes and lungs. The iodine fumes work very well. The fumes do irritate the eyes. I think you want to use water at room temperature so as to avoid the loss of iodine. Peace & gratitude, Dean > > > > Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in (hot vs cold) have any effect? > > Craig > > >
Guest guest
Hi Dean: I'm really not trying to propagate a " scary myth " -- I'm just passing on generations-old chemistry lab safety practice that was institute for good reason. If the vapors you were using irritated your eyes they constitute just as much of an irritant to the tissues in the respiratory tract, and I strongly suggest that you not continue with that practice. The risk IS real, you know, not just a chimera conjured up sellers of safety gear. Please. Respectfully, Megaera > > > > > > Does the temperature of the medium used to mix the Iodine or KI in (hot vs cold) have any effect? > > > Craig > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Megaera,Thanks for your reply. Sorry that I wasn’t too clear on my question. It wasn’t for mixing the two elements together, but I drink 3 different hot drinks in the morning and I was inquiring if it would have any effect on the Lugols solution. Thanks,Craig
Guest guest
Hi Craig, Hot temperatures do have a detrimental effect on Lugol's solution. It is best to take it in room temperature or cold liquids, such as water or juice. Kind regards, -Kathleen moderator Re: Temperature Hi Megaera, Thanks for your reply.
