Hi,I started taking Erfa 9 days ago,initial dose of half grain(i.e. 30mgs). I

noticed that after a few hrs I would feel a bit dizzy but otherwise ok.I thought

maybe I had virtigo again but it lasted for a much shorter period of time.I took

some medication that I was on before for it but with no effect. I increased my

dose yesterday to a full grain and I do feel a bit peculiar and a little dizzy

after about 3 hrs.

Otherwise I'm starting to feel better and have more energy already so I was just

wondering if this is normal?

Thanks,

Tina.

It can be normal and after a few days your body should get used

to this new thyroid hormone it hasn't been getting for a while, but if the

dizziness doesn't go away, then lower your dose again by quarter of a grain and

see if that helps. There are some people who are particular sensitive to

thyroid extract, and need to take increases very, very slowly.

Also, you need to check out that you are not suffering with low

levels of iron, ferritin, vitamin B122, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper

or zinc, so ask your GP to test these, and let you have the reference range for

each of the tests done, and then post them here on the forum. We can then help

with their interpretation

I think going from 1/2 a grain to 1 full grain in 9 days is a bit much too soon.

I was told to go up by 1/4 grain every 10 days. Some people advocate going much

slower than that - perhaps increase every few weeks.

I would go slow and increase by small amounts. There is no hurry, though I

appreciate that it feels like there is when you have been unwell and feel unwell

for a long time.

Have you checked your adrenal function and all the vitamins and minerals that

Sheila mentions quite often?

There are many people who because they may have been hypo for some time, and longer than they realise, cannot tolerate increasing the dose of thyroid supplement too quickly.

For some increasing the dose every 6 weeks or so is soon enough. The body has to get used to having this available when previously thyroid hormone was scarce.....do increase slowly in the first instance; it maybe that once your body is slightly more used to it that you can speed up the increments, but generally in my experience it is necessary to do it slowly leaving some weeks between each increment rather than days.
