Guest guest
Hi You asked about taking magnesium and calcium together. I realise some supplements contain both, but they shouldnt generally be taken together; they are antagonistic. Generally with hypothyroidism, you will not be short of calcium in the body, but it will be displaced from the bones and found in soft tissue. Magnesium helps the calcium back into the bones and teeth rather than soft tissue; only <1% should be in the soft tissue and >99% in the bones. Magnesium on the other hand is generally at least 50% in the soft tissue and 50% in the bones and teeth. The bones and teeth are the body;s mineral pantry that is this is where the body stores its mineral supply. When taking a single supplement of a mineral such as magnesium you should also take and multi-mineral supplement too, this prevents the other minerals being displaced by taking the single supplement. IF you have to take calcium for whatever reason, take it two hours before bedtime and take magnesium immediately before bedtime ; that is two hours after calcium; this prevents their antagonistic tendency toward each other. Vitamin D is also helpful in getting the calcium into the bones and so to CALCITONIN (contained in pigs thyroid or NDT).
Guest guest
, do I take it that the B Complex contains all the b's listen underneath it, or are you thinking of taking these along with the B Complex. Think that this is a daft question I am asking, but felt the need, just to be sure. A suitable dosze of zinc is 15mgs. If you chew a tablet and it tastes of chalk, you are short of zinc, but if it tastes very, very metallic and quite unpleasant, then your zinc level is fine. If potassium levels are low, you can get potassium from Banana's, tomatoes, but you can find a list of foods containing high potassium levels on the Internet. If they are very low, you can take supplements such as Sando- K. Watch out that you don't take any iron or calcium at the same time as you take any thyroid hormone replacements. What thyroid supplements or adrenal supplements are you taking, and have you been able to get Nutri Adrenal Extra from Nutri Ltd. Check out our Files section under 'Discounts on Tests and Supplements' Luv - Sheila Sheila and Jot have given me advice re which vits I need and in what kind of doses, which has been a great help. I am currently out of my remote community for a couple of days and trying to stock up on the relevant vits. Can anyone comment on the suitability of the following doses, which I have found? Iron - Ferrous Fumerate 310mg(equivalent to elemental iron 100mg) with Folic Acid - 350ug (Jot & Sheila recommended min 200mg per day of iron) Vit C - 1000mg tabs ( 500mg ascorbic acid & 563mg sodium ascorbate) ( 4/5000mg per day was recommended so I'll Be chewing plenty of these!) Magnesium aminoacid chelate - 500mg (equivalent to elemental magnesium 100mg) Jot said 400mg was the basic everyday dose B Complex: B1 - 50mg B2 - 25mg B3 (nicotinamide) -50mg (this is lower than Jot's recommended brand which had 25mg B3 as niacin & 100mg as niacinamide) B5 - (calcium pantothenate) 50mg (Jot recommended 100mg) B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride) - 50mg (Jot recommended 25mg as this plus 10mg as pyridoxal 5-phosphate) B12 - 50mcg (Jot recommended 100mcg) Vit C (ascorbic acid) 100mg Folic Acid - 200mcg (400mcg was recommended but I am getting a top-up in the iron tablet) Biotin - 50mcg (Jot recommended 300mcg) Choline Bitartrate - 50mcg (Jot recommends 50MG) Inositol - 50mcg (Jot recommends 50MG) Jot also recommended PABA 30mg which is not in this complex Sheila also recommended Zinc - what is a suitable dose? Jot mentioned that Potassium needs to be in top of the range - what would that be? Do I need to take Calcium to balance the Magnesium? Most of the supplements available seemed to have the 2 together? Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Thanks for he info. I am not yet taking any thyroid supplements as I still don't really know what is going on. I was going to order the nutri adrenal supplement but am starting a job in Bruei in January and they won't ship to Asia, due to problems with customs confisctaing 'suspicioous drugs'!! I have to get a cover letter from a doctor just to take in the vits I am buying! I am hoping to get vit/mineral levels tested in Singapore in December en-route to Brunei and take things from there. Then try and order Nutri adrenal to be delivered to Aus and pick them up in my next holiday - I don't want to risk ordering them to where I am living in Aus at resent as our post is very unreliable in the remote community. Yes, what I listed was the doses in the B Complex I am looking at - I noticed that some of the levels were very low compared to the doses in Jot's recommended brand (which I am aso not ordering for the same postal reasons) and was not sure if that meant I needed to up those specific individual vits. I'll try the zinc today and see how it tastes! Thanks again... I'll hopefully ne posting again if I can get those tests in Singapore, with some results. Guest guest
Hi Sally, thanks for replying - I had no idea that mag/cal wer antagonistic! Very good to know! I have not managed to get any vit/mineral tests yet, so it's all guesswork at this stage, but as B complexand the others I mentioned have been strongly recommended, I thought I'd start there and see how things go until I can get tests done. If I am taking supplements for iron, magnesium, zinc, Vit C, and B complex, would you still advise a multi vit as well, as you suggest? I'm just wondering if that will up my overall B doses too high? It' hard to find a multi that has high doses of what's been recommended, whish is why I am looking at individual options. Thanks, > > Hi You asked about taking magnesium and calcium together. I realise some supplements contain both, but they shouldnt generally be taken together; they are antagonistic. > [Ed]
Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Just got some zinc and tried the taste test and laughed- my body's obviously not sure as it tasted very chalky initially followed by a horrible aftertaste which was a bit metallic! Typical confused reaction for me! A > suitable dosze of zinc is 15mgs. Guest guest
Then it sounds as if your zinc level is not too bad . However, if the taste was a bit metallic " you might need to supplement zinc as it should taste VERY metallic.
