Guest guest
I wonder if this is why, when I try to give up smoking, all I want to do is sleep...? I do not know anyone else who feels completely exhausted when they try to give up smoking, but I am just hit by a huge wave of tiredness, it is like hitting a wall, especially mid afternoon. Just when I have to pick the kids up. Must get the blood test results from the doctor - the ones the secretary said had "high" written on the TSH, but the GP said, "They are fine.." But if smoking can mask it, well that explains a thing or two, doesn't it? Now I have just found an article explaining that nicotine can mask the deterioration of the thyroid:- http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa101397.htm This makes sense to me, but what ever do I do now? If I did give up the nicotine lozenges, it seems my Hashimotos would be far worse - no wonder I cannot give them up !
Guest guest
Hi Yes, that`s what happens to me when I don`t have nicotine - its as if the ciggies have been a drug that`s masked, not just a failing thyroid, but failing adrenals. I know it was my adrenals that suffered first, after years of unrelenting stress - yet the ciggies were the first thing I grabbed when under stress. Eventually I could not get going at all without tea and ciggies. They were falsely giving me energy and motivation. So, get your adrenals checked ! Guest guest
I don't know about thyroid and nicotine, but have you tried e-cigs? Hubby gave up smoking and switched to e-cigs overnight and has never touched a normal cigarette again. He now considers them to be disgusting. Once you have tried the more advanced e-cigs, (not the rather crappy, look-a-like ones you get in tesco's) you will never need another nicotine substance again, another aspect to them is that you can tailor your nicotine dosage to your own needs and lower the dosage to zero if you want. Another aspect is that you don't need to have tobacco flavour in the e-cig liquid, you can have lemon meringue flavour, or chocolate flavour, or bacon or 200 other flavours, in a formulation that is at least as safe as patches etc. This is a seller that hubby uses. http://www.safercigs.co.uk/ and you can see reviews and talks about e-cigs on http://www.vapourtrails.tv/ 2. > > Is anyone else addicted to nicotine lozenges and/or has been a smoker in the past? > > Jane >
Guest guest
Just thought I would add my success story of giving up 9 years ago now. I used to be a really really heavy smoker (too ashamed to say how many!!) - but my hypo symptoms were as bad before I gave up. Sounds like your symptoms are hypo related rather than cigs related. I tried a few times to give up when my children were younger but failed - had to wait until they were much older and working before I managed it - says a lot about stress and children doesnt it!!! I went to the stop smoking clinic, got patches from them and then more from GP for another 2 months - he wouldnt give any more once he gave me reduced dose, said if I needed higher dose he would give them after I had tried the lower dose and it didnt work! Apparently research shows that attending a clinic attains a much higher success rate than any other form of cessation - worked for me!! Good luck to all of you trying to quit - I just used to say to myself that it cant be that difficult as so many thousands of others have done it - it was lovely to go anyway and not look for cigs and lighter to go into handbag or pocket etc! Guest guest
Hello and thanks for the thought. I had a look at the websites and the e-ciggies look ingenious, but I think I`m past the actual `making smoke and inhaling` stage and reckon it would be a step backwards for me. I`ve got over the actual process of holding and puffing etc. But I`m now addicted to the buzz of the lozenge in my mouth. Just scared that even if I did manage to cut out nicotine my adrenal and hypothyroid symptoms would get far worse. It seems to be the giving up smoking/nicotine that can trigger hypothyroidism.
