Guest guest
Last time I had my blood tests done at the surgery my cholesterol came back at 5.4. The receptionists were in hysterics and said I had to see a doctor NOW!!! I did actually laugh at them and said I wasn't worried about cholesterol and that I would never go on statins again. They said I would 'die of a heart attack' so I simply said that I wouldn't be bothering them for appointments then would I? When I did see the doctor I told her that it was quite common for cholesterol to be raised when you're hypothyroid and the trick was to look for the problem NOT hand out statins like sweets!! That was several years ago, I don't have bloods done at the GP's any more, they don't know how to read them when you're on NDT. Glynis > > Hi everyone, > My cholesterol is 4.5 -range ?-4.0. The receptionist said I need to be on a low fat diet,I nearly laughed because I've been on one for months. Is this common with Hypothyroidism? Guest guest
Mine's even higher - 7.8 unfortunately. A bit concerning especially when the triglycerides are high, too. Interestingly, high cholesterol is one of the things that my doctor said was a symptom of thyroid problems and put me on Erfa...cholesterol used to be called the poor man's thyroid test , didn't it? I read that homocysteine's supposed to be a better indicator of future heart problems? Chris > > Last time I had my blood tests done at the surgery my cholesterol came back at 5.4. Guest guest
there's a lot of evidence to suggest low fat/low cholesterol = anti-health. the adrenals need some good quality saturated fat. cholesterol is a building block ...there is a hormonal cascade ...first pregnenolone and then either dhea or progesterone (or a bit of both). if we don't have proper fat intake (quality and quantity) the fat soluble vitamins won't work properly. vitamin d is fat soluble for example. we need fat but we don't need sugar! if you have tsh at 10 you are hypothyroid ...what were your other results (with their ranges). it is better not to supplement iron unless you know you need it. statins = anti health too! trish > > Hi everyone, > My cholesterol is 4.5 -range ?-4.0. The receptionist said I need to be on a low fat diet,I nearly laughed because I've been on one for months. Is this common with Hypothyroidism? My other results were 'satisfactory' apparently.(no disrespect to receptionists) My GP will be disappointed with that as he doesn't think I could have hypothyroid symptoms even though I've had it for 8 years and my TSH is 10 at present. > I have sone Ferrous Fumerate at home, should I just take it anyway and vit C? starting NAX this weekend and then Erfa. > Thankyou, > Tina. >
Guest guest
When it comes down to it, the barin itself is about 40% or 50% cholesterol, its why we make it.
Guest guest
Hi there are two types of cholesterol, LDL and HDL. So eating a low fat diet doesnt necessary mean you will have a low or lower cholesterol. You can and it will help to eat monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats which are HDL and will actually help lower cholesterol and also reduce the risk of heart disease. http://www.helpguide.org/life/healthy_diet_fats.htm Have a read of this link its good some good information and a list of foods which are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, but also a list of the fats to avoid. Hope it helps Steve > > Hi everyone,
Guest guest
With high cholesterol you should be taking high doses in both Niacin (vitamin B3) and CoEnzyme Q10. I should say about 300mgs of both. Both help lower cholesterol naturally and are very good for you too. Luv - Sheila Hi there are two types of cholesterol, LDL and HDL. Guest guest
You need both types of cholesterol for your body to work properly neither is 'bad'for you. Many nutricianists recommend olive oil for cooking etc which is extremely high in cholesterol so what are they getting at? I firmly believe that to have a heart attack or stroke there are lots of scenarios that need to come together, there is no one single cause. Guest guest
If you are only eating LDL's then you are at a greater risk of hesrt disease along with higher cholesterol, and while yes you do need both types in balance just LDL's or a lot of LDL's is down right bad for you.... Please dont comment if you know nothing about something, olive oil is one of the best HDL's yes it contains cholesterol but the good type ie monosaturated fat and HDL. Monounsaturated fats lower total and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL). Polyunsaturated fats lower triglycerides and fight inflammation. Saturated fats raise your blood cholesterol. Trans fats are even worse than saturated fats, since they not only raise your bad LDL cholesterol, but also lower the good HDL cholesterol. One of many sources if you had bothered to read the link it has some amazing information about the types of cholesterol. http://www.helpguide.org/life/healthy_diet_fats.htm Steve > > You need both types of cholesterol for your body to work properly neither is 'bad'for you. > Many nutricianists recommend olive oil for cooking etc which is extremely high in cholesterol so what are they getting at? Guest guest
That isn't quite accurate. There is one type of cholesterol, as you discover if you look up it's chemical formula. LDL and HDL are the transport proteins. http://rpi.edu/dept/bcbp/molbiochem/MBWeb/mb2/part1/lipoprot.htm Miriam > Hi there are two types of cholesterol, LDL and HDL. Guest guest
Hi Steve, nobody should " give advice " on this forum apart from Medical Advisers as we are not medically qualified. We give other members the benefit of our experience or recommendations and try to back these up by giving links to the scientific research/studies where we can. There is a disclaimer on every message posted to say that we are not medically qualified and to check with your medical practitioner before changing any medications. Yes, the forum is busy and yes, we do have a lot of members and these are growing by the day, but if members get confused at conflicting information, the moderators are here to help them. We are not heading down the same road as 'Curezone' and never will. That is why the group is moderated. Luv - Sheila Yes sorry hopefully people knew what i ment.
