Don't panic ! You can get thyroid function tests done through

Genova Diagnostics. Go to our FILES section of this forum web site. Click on

the FOLDER entitled 'Discounts on Supplements and Tests' then open the document

'Genova Diagnostics' and follow the instructions there. You need to tell them

that Thyroid Patient Advocacy is your medical practitioner in order to get the

tests and the discount they give to TPA members.

NP Tech and Lab21 stopped TFT's quite some time back.

i went today to get my blood kit from lab21/nptech and they to;d me they dont

ive used them for years for my bloods.

The T4/T3 is a 24 hour urinary test, ; the full thyroid screen is a blood test- but yes, the urinary test is more expensive.

It depends what you want to use the test for - the urinary test will show exactly how much thyroid hormone your body has been using in a 24 hour period. It is the most accurate test of all, but will be totally pooh-pooh-ed by NHS doctors as "not NHS approved" and is thereby "worthless" in their eyes.... - so if you want to use the test result to prove to your doctor that you really are hypothyroid, then I would opt for a blood test. They might still not recognize the "validity" of a private blood test, but you have a much better chance that they will. The blood test has also the advantage that they check both thyroid antibodies, TPO and TgAB (and, if you pay extra, rT3) - the urinary test does not provide that, but will give you a true reflection of how much thyroid hormone your body has used over 24 hours. Just because blood figures show "normal" results, does not necessarily mean that the body is utilizing the thyroid hormone that's on offer in the bloodstream.... -

So you have to decide what is the most useful test for you.

with best wishes,

The T4 and T3 is testing the amount of thyroid hormone that has

actually passed through the cells, so it is the best test to find how much your

body is using. This is the 24 hour urine test and more complex than the blood

tests. The blood test only tests the amount of T4 and T3 that is in your blood,

before it gets to the thyroid hormone receptors.

In case anybody has a GP who refuses to recognise the results

you have got from Genova Diagnostics then take a copy of their 'Quality

Assurance' (see attachment) so they can see that this laboratory is genuine.
