Guest guest
I don't use this site often but thank God it's here. For the past four years I have had no end of problems with my TSH being too high, and the associated problems that entailed, and being able to read posts by people suffering from the same problems have reassured me a lot, and also given me the guts to stand up for myself today. I had a blood test last week after 10 months of being with my new gp surgery and phoned for the results. I have been feeling really under the weather for the last 6 months, on and off, and I was on 125mcu thyroxine, prescribed in January because my TSH was higher again. Anyway, my results hadn't been seen by a doctor, so the receptionist didn't know what to do...would I like a docs appt next week....NO....tell me the numbers on the form please. Okay she says....Serum Free T4 is 26.2, it says high!! and TSH is 0.05, is that okay.....no it isn't okay, I think I should speak to a doctor....oh she says will next week do....NO....I think not. Okay, will you chat to a nurse...YES...okay. Nurse rings back, maybe you should see a doctor, yes okay...next week be okay...NO....as soon as possible. Just get doc .....any doc...to ring me and discuss these results. Show him the form and he can decide for himself if he needs to contact me. Okay she says....5 minutes later doc comes on phone...these results are not good at all, no wonder you feel so poorly, reduce to 100mcu for a few weeks and then reduce to 75mcu and come back for blood test in 8 weeks to make sure you haven't gone under active again. Not perfect...but thanks to this site I was able to make my feelings known and get something done urgently. Looking forward to feeling better now. Thanks group. Guest guest
It may not be the answer you need though…….this doctor obviously thinks you are taking too much thyroxine because your free T4 is so high and your TSH is suppressed. He obviously has not considered that the reason your free T4 is so high is because it is NOT CONVERTING to the active thyroid hormone T3. It is T3 that every cell in your body and brain need to make them function, NOT T4. If T4 is not converting, it has nowhere to go and lies around in the blood causing symptoms of toxicity and your pituitary , which secretes TSH when it recognises there are low levels of thyroid hormone in the blood, has no need to secrete ANY TSH, so becomes completely suppressed, because it has already recognised there are high levels of thyroxine in the blood. I reckon you don't need thyroxine - you need the active thyroid hormone T3, so you should ask your GP for a trial - and if he doesn't want to give you one, then you need to ask for a referral to an endocrinologist who knows more about how the thyroid system works. There are many of us unable to convert thyroxine into T3, and we take T3 to replace what is not being made and feel brilliant - I am one of them. I think you may well have to 'educate' this doctor and tell him that you are NOT suffering with symptoms of hypothyroidism and explain to him about conversion, or rather, a lack of conversion in your case. I have attached a document telling you of the many different possible causes why thyroxine suddenly doesn't work, and another document showing you references to some of the research and studies done that show that if certain minerals/vitamins are low in the reference range, they need to be supplemented before thyroid hormone can work. Doctors deny that some of these are needed, so ask for those tests mentioned and copy out the list of references to show your GP why you need them.
