Guest guest
Lily: Iodine is not a problem. Avoid aspirin/willow bark, which functions as a platelet deaggregator, the obvious Rx blood thinners like coumadin(warfarin) and similar, and OTC supplements that have the effect of altering the clotting cascade. These can include fish oil supplements, ginko bilobo, garlic, and anything that advertises itself as affecting fibrinogen. I hasten to add that there is nothing intrinsically harmful about any of these supplements, but they can slow your clotting response, and that makes surgeons and anesthesiologists nervous. You don't want that. Also, they tend to increase your postop swelling and bruising, and consequent pain. You really don't want that. If you happen to be taking any of the above, just dc it now, resume at some point about a week or two post op. Guest guest
Lily: Also, don't forget to d/c Vitamin E if you take it, same reasons as above. -M- > > Going for major surgery next week and told not to take anything that would thin my blood. > > Is iodine ok to take? Guest guest
This response is already too late to matter in your case, Lily, but I have something important to add to this topic, based on my husband's experience in taking iodine since August (ie, 3+ months now). Iodine does appear to affect his prothrombin (clotting) time, which he gets measured every two weeks. However, I am beginning to suspect that it's not the iodine per se which causes his blood to become thinner, but that it's the immediate, short-term effects of " bromide detox " which accounts for the temporary spike in his INR because after he becomes adjusted to each newly increased dosage of iodine, then his INR seems to stabilize. I don't have any other logical explanation for what seems to be happening. Therefore, in your upcoming surgery, I doubt that iodine would affect your tendency to increased bleeding during or immediately after surgery as long as you continue taking the same dosage that your body has become adjusted to. However, to be on the safe side, I'd be careful not to increase my iodine dosage if I were you until your surgery has healed past the point of the worry about bleeding. PS - Sorry for the delay in this reply, but I've been out of town for several days (attending a celiac medical conference in Dallas) so I'm just now getting caught up again with e-mails. > > Going for major surgery next week and told not to take anything that would thin my blood. > > Is iodine ok to take?
