Guest guest
Hi , I would read up about this here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graves'_disease I think usually, with antibodies to specific organs such as Hashimoto's Disease, where the thyroid antibodies attack the thyroid gland only, that once the gland has been destroyed (or surgically removed) there is no longer a need for the antibodies, so they disappear, but in the case of Grave's antibodies, there is more than one organ they attack - they can also attack the tissue behind the eye, causing exopthalmos, so in this case, if the thyroid has been removed, the antibodies could hang around and attack this tissue - read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exophthalmos .. Also, once the thyroid gland has been removed, you are likely then to develop hypothyroidism which will need thyroid hormone replacement for life. Again, once you have been tested and found to have thyroid antibodies, I doubt if they will continue to test your levels, but they will need to monitor your thyroid levels.
