My doctor just told me she thinks I'm pre-diabetic because my glucose was 93 and

my A1C was 98. I am 5'5 " , weigh 115 lbs and run 5 miles every day. My adrenal

test did show that my insulin level was depressed. I have been on synthroid for

10 years due to partial thyroidectomy and started Idoral (now taking 37mg) about

6 weeks ago. I also have a high level of RT3 (380). Will taking iodine help my

glucose? My sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 12 so it is

in my family. I appreciate any advice. Thanks so much!

I don't think you got the A1c # correct. It should include a decimal point.

Maybe 9.8? Do you have results for insulin levels?

Thanks Linn - You are correct about the A1C - mine is 5.8 with an estimated

average glucose of 120. My fasting and non-fasting insulin levels were both less

than 3. Thanks so much!

That sounds more in line. Do you happen to have the lab ranges for the insulin

results. If it was me I would address diet and liver detox, that would help

both RT3 and glucose issues.

I have been told that taking Vitamin C can affect the readings of glucose levels. Many of the people on here are taking Vitamin C as part of the Iodine protocol. Have you gone off the Vitamin for a while before getting your glucose tested? Personally I think it many depend on what form of Vit C it is.

Do you have any idea what form will not affect your BG? I think what I take does increase mine. MargeFrom: Linn <mwm1glm@...>iodine Sent: Thu, October 27, 2011 11:55:53 AMSubject: Re: Glucose levels

I started taking Vitamin C when I started my Idoral the first of September.

These labs were drawn shortly before this. However, that is good to know because

I need a repeat test so I will stop the Vitamin C a few days before. Thanks,

Chris!

The normal lab range for fasting insulin is 3-12 and mine said <3. The Optimal

range for non-fasting is 5-20 and my report said mine was depressed at <3 for

that one also. I bought a liver detox from Whole Foods. I just haven't started

it yet but hope it helps in many ways. Thanks! Lynn

I'm not sure I'd be too worried, it's better to be on the low end of that scale.

Mine gets flagged too. Keep in mind that test values are inclusive of large

numbers of folks who have health issues.

Does the form you're taking now contain carb? I'd have to look it up but I

vaguely remember the correlation affecting blood sugarbut not A1c results.

If ANY item raises blood glucose AT ALL, EVENTUALLY you're A1c WILL creep up. Take it from someone that knows. Jim

No, I don't play a doctor on TV. I just like to play around with the MAs.

This message aproved by Jim Fry. Damn, it sounds stupid no matter who says it.

I'm taking the CostCo Kirkland brand. That's what I've taken for years. 1000mg Ascorbic Acid with 100mg Citrus Bioflavanoid Complex (Citrus spp.) and 10% (10mg) heperidin and Rutin, and Rose Hips. Plus other fillers. I was taking 4,000 mg when I hit 50mg Iodoral, but I've gradually cut back. Today I took 1000mg only this morning and tested my BG at various times of the day to get a profile. Tomorrow, I will add back 1000mg in the evening and see if that has an effect. MargeFrom: Linn <mwm1glm@...>iodine Sent: Thu, October 27, 2011 3:09:16 PMSubject: Re: Glucose levels

Thanks for the clue about this, Linn. This is of special concern to me because of a unique problem my husband has, so I took the trouble to look it up. I googled "vitamin C + blood glucose monitoring") and here is what I found. (Notice the older date of 1999 on this article. I didn't take time to look for more recent info about it.)

http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/1999/09/01/1630/high-doses-of-vitamin-c-supplement-increase-blood-glucose-levels/

According to the July issue of Diabetes Care, high doses of supplementary vitamin C may cause an unexpected elevation of blood sugar levels and false diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

R. Branch, PhD, reports the case of a 49-year-old, slightly obese man who took high levels of vitamin C, causing high fasting (121 mg/dl) and after-meal (220 mg/dl) blood sugar levels. The man, who had earlier been diagnosed as a potential candidate for type 2 diabetes based on his age, obesity and repeat elevated blood sugar readings, had taken 4,500 mg. per day of a synthetic, unsweetened vitamin C product for the past five years.

The patient was asked to discontinue the supplement and, after seven days, morning blood sugar averages dropped to 99 mg/dl. He then restarted vitamin C supplements in dosages of 4,500 mg. per day, and morning blood sugars rose to 110 mg/dl. He discontinued the supplement again and, after one week, blood sugars dropped to 79 mg/dl.

Branch says that elevated blood sugars, as a result of taking such a high dose of vitamin C, "...could result in a misdiagnosis of diabetes and/or additional, unnecessary testing, as in this case." He adds that "..vitamin C-induced production of glucose may interfere in the glucose monitoring of true diabetic patients."

Branch says that the man reduced his vitamin C intake to 1,500 mg. per day, and his blood sugars returned to the normal range. He says that vitamin C, taken in dosages of 1,500 to 2,000 mg. per day, has been proven to effectively reduce blood sugar and HbA1c levels. Also, research suggests it prevents kidney injury in diabetic rats.

Well, I've had time to continue looking for more info from the Google search regarding "vitamin C + blood glucose monitoring" and I found something of interest on the US FDA website. The FDA info leads me to conclude that Vit C probably does not cause an actual blood sugar elevation problem, but that Vit C appears to cause a problem with the accuracy of a particular method of (or device for) measuring blood glucose.

http://www.fda.gov/medicaldevices/productsandmedicalprocedures/invitrodiagnostics/glucosetestingdevices/default.htm

Look under the sub-heading "How accurate is this test?"

"interfering substances (some substances, such as Vitamin C and uric acid, may interfere with your glucose testing). Check the package insert for your meter and test strips to find out what substances may affect the testing accuracy. "

Therefore, I am now concluding that it's probably OK to take as much vit C as you want to, just as long as you are aware that doing so might skew your BG measurements done at home -- ie, that Vit C probably does not affect the actual BG level in the body. In other words, Linn's memory about this appears to be correct that Vit C doesn't afffect the A1c level because A1c is a different method of measuring BG.

That's one of the articles I read also. Other articles suggested that it was

more of a problem for diabetics.

I got a hunch that if your serum vitamin C is high then the higher reading of

the glucose shouldn't be worrisome as the C acts as a guard or protector to cell

damage. It is your fasting glucose level that is important, afaik.

Peace and gratitude, Dean

It could just be a flukey result, or even a lab error. Get retested to be sure.

Glucose levels

I recently went to a new GP and he required new labs. I was very unhappy with

him & refused a follow-up appt. My question is that my glucose was high (113 ref

range 65-99). I'm thin, eat very healthy & don't have any family history of

diabetes. My glucose has always been in the normal range. Has anyone experienced

this? Any advice?

Were you fasting before the testing was done? If not, that is probably why it is

113. If fasting for twelve hours first it is high.
