Guest guest
My knowledge is that NO sinus infections are not contagious but.... if someone has irritated sinuses the bacteria can be transferred into the tissue and with our kids then they are more likely to become infected. . Or if it is a virus then the virus is generally contagious. Sinus infections generally occur because of the inflammation in the nasal passages ( from bacteria, allergy or virus) and then the tissue becomes swollen and blocks off the actually sinuses. This allows bacteria to grow and become trapped and allows the tissue to become infected. That is why the nasal rinses are so effective. They clear out and rinse the cavities removing irritations and bacteria that can turn into infections. Antibiotics have a very difficult time penetrating the sinuses. Generally when they do surgery they clean out the sinuses by irrigating and then remove very damaged tissue and open up blockages so that the rest can heal. So now you know more than you ever wanted to know. I want to know...are sinus infections contagious? A friend of mine has a daughter she took to the dr this morning because she has had a " cold " for a month. It has turned into a sinus ifection that she was prescribed antibiotics for. She calls me to ask if Tori can spend the night, and I told her no. Aren't sinus infections contagious? She didn't mention that her daughter was sick until later in the conversation. Grrrr, thanks good ness I said no since I am going out of town and my hubby doesn't do well with sick kids. Especially on Christmas break! I am sick of people bringing their sick kids around and telling me it's " just " a sinus infection when 3 days later I have 2 sick kids. Sinus infections hit us harder, and we generally miss school because of them! Sorry, just my vent. Surely its not in my head.
Guest guest
Hey , I would say you would not necessarily get a " sinus infection " . BUT you could an infection of some sorts that could lead to a sinus infection if you are prone to it. Sinus infections are a huge problem in our house. A lot of times and I will have sinus troubles at about the same time or one right after another. If his nose is draining and he cultures out pseudomonas, strep pneumonia, etc those are real bacteria that can cause problems in someone else especially in an immune def. person. has cultured out certain bacteria from his sinuses then I got an ear infection (which cultured out the same bacteria)and it eventually lead to a sinus infection in me too, hmmmmm! So, I would say if there is physical drainage coming from their nose they are contagious in my book. And, I don't care if it is bacterial or viral - don't want either! I definitely think you did the right thing! Guest guest
--- It seems like they are, bc my four kids almost always come down with them at the same time. I think that the virus or bacteria that causes them IS contagious, but bc my kids are easy to get infections in the sinuses, thats where they land. valarie mom to 3 w/cvid In , Barbara Jimenez <mother5590@...> wrote: > > My knowledge is that NO sinus infections are not contagious but.... if someone has irritated sinuses the bacteria can be transferred into the tissue and with our kids then they are more likely to become infected. . Guest guest
Hello all, First of all, sorry I'm asking so many questions. I just wondered if sinus infections were a symptom of hypothyroid? I'm SURE I remember reading this but I've been googling it and can't find it now. Ever since I first got sick at the beginning of the year I've had a bit of a sinus infection on and off. It was really bad at one point and the doctors refused to give me anything even though I'd had it constantly for 3 months and I felt very spaced out and had a pain in my face and actually inside my head when I coughed. I was nearly collapsing walking up the street and I ended up going to A and E and they gave me antibiotics, saying I should have been able to fight it off by now so it was a bit odd. It feels like I never got much better though, green tinged mucus in the morning and also thick white mucus (sorry if that's an overshare) is in my throat ALL day. I can't answer the phone at work without clearing my throat tonnes or I'm all croaky. The mucus in my throat is SO think and sometimes clear or a bit white. You can't easily just swallow it.. Nasty! The problem with my eyes can also be caused by bacteria getting in the meibomian glands, so I'm wondering if they're related.. Sorry if that's a bit grim but I was curious if this was yet another hypo symptom. I was reading that Swedish paper that was posted today, it really made me feel justified in pursuing this, as has this forum. The doctors made me feel like I was making a big fuss about nothing and was mad but I bet they would if they felt like us. Thanks, Jess
Guest guest
i don't know if sinus infections are a symptom of being hypo but they are horrible regardless of cause. what i have found to be very effective is to dilute some grapefruit seed extract (a few drops in water) and then sniff it up each nostril ...if you are not familiar with grapefruit seed extract, please be warned not to have the solution too strong and do not get it in your eyes (it will sting like mad). you could try eliminating dairy and gluten for a while and see if that has a positive effect for you ...i think ginger and raw honey also helps mucus to be clear and not so thick. best wishes trish > > Hello all, > > First of all, sorry I'm asking so many questions. > > I just wondered if sinus infections were a symptom of hypothyroid? Guest guest
Hi, i remeber reading a post of Val's saying that sinus infections are directly linked to the adrenals, so maybe boosting them adrenals will help you clear it off. (large dose of Vit C or some extra HC if you are on HC) Ps when you try what trish suggested with the grapefruit make sure its only a few drops in water and not what i did (sniffed pure grapefruit) and my eyes watered for about 15 mins after but it worked a treat lol. Guest guest
No idea of the thyroid link but I've had sinusitis for a couple of years - mine is allergy-based (allergic to mice and unfortunately I already had quite a few as pets before I knew!) but I get all the symptoms you describe. Horrible! One thing I've found very useful is a Neti pot - have a google, they are on ebay too. Basically you fill it up with weak salt water (you can buy a pot with some purified salt with it), tip in one nostril and it washes out the sinuses and comes out the other side. It's a bit freaky but it really helps - gets all the gunk out and I've found it very helpful for the mucous too (I can't cope with it in my throat at all, it makes me physically ill so anything that helps is good!). You can also get pressurised bottles of saline in boots etc that you can squirt up your nose to do the same thing - but a) it works best when the water is body temp, and the neti pot doesn't shoot it up there which I find awful! A good clear out a couple of times a day works best for me (with the second one being just before bed, because that's when I've just fed the mice so I can wash all the allergens out before I react). Guest guest
Hi, I totally sympathise as I have suffered with sinus pain on & off and its awful! As Niki suggested I find that Sterimar saline spray helps a bit. I also eat lots of garlic as its anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial etc etc. I also avoid dairy and other foods that are mucus forming (sugar, bread etc). I wonder if the Oreganol P73 stuff might help? JOT suggested it to me on here and I have been taking the super strength liquid. Again it is one of those things that is anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial etc etc. Trish mentioned grapefruit seed extract, and I would strongly echo what she said about diluting it very well. I once put some in an empty vegi-cap, swallowed with water and then went to sleep, only to wake up later vomiting blood! The capsule had dissolved in my oesophagus and it burnt me causing me to vomit blood and spend all night in A & E. My silly fault thinking it would be ok neat dissolving in my stomach, but it didnt get that far eek!! Good luck hun! x > > > > i don't know if sinus infections are a symptom of being hypo but they are horrible regardless of cause. > > what i have found to be very effective is to dilute some grapefruit seed extract (a few drops in water) and then sniff it up each nostril ...if you are not familiar with grapefruit seed extract, please be warned not to have the solution too strong and do not get it in your eyes (it will sting like mad). > best wishes > > trish >
Guest guest
Thanks for the sinus advice everyone. It's kind of a low grade infection at the moment not a full blown sinus infection like I had a few months ago, but if it does come back I now know lots of thing to attack it with! Thanks also for the grapefruit seed warning, I'll be sure to be careful with that! > > i don't know if sinus infections are a symptom of being hypo but they are horrible regardless of cause. >
Guest guest
Hi Jess, i had sinus surgery last year because i had really bad poylps for years but have always suffered since a child growing up in a house with no central heating and damp and mould, i was told and done extensive research that it possibly be related to candida and the spores like to fire them up more. My thyroid problem was detected 2 months after my sinus's were cleaned. Hope this helps Ali x
Guest guest
A Neti Pot is brilliant and use it with Himalayan salt solution. If it is getting into your ears, you are not holding your head right. You should be putting your head on your side like you are laying in bed (trying to touch your shoulder with the side of your face) rather than putting your head back, which is what I suspect you are doing. This should work for your sinuses fine. Luv - Sheila Thanks for the sinus advice everyone.
