Guest guest
Are you taking selenium? That caused my hair to fall out a lot, even though I was taking far below the " safe " dose. I may have been getting some from my food. Thanks, Doris ----- Original Message ----- From: " is " <playpup@...> > I have heard lack of zinc could be a cause, as well as thryroid > dysfunction. Guest guest
Hi is I started losing my hair when I first became ill. Since it took some time for me to get a diagnosis (2 years, but hey what's new!!) my GP at the time prescribed a general strong Vitamin B complex, which stopped the hair loss. If I now stop the Vit B (been ill quite some years now) then the hair loss starts to become a lot more apparent again. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Dave, If there's biotin in your B vitamins, that may be what's stopping the hair loss. It is reported to do that. Guest guest
Hair Loss > I have been experiencing extreme hair loss again. > >> Any clues? Me too is, except I still have hair on my body. My factors involve hysterectomy, thyroid, chemical exposure ( a drug) and the heavy metals. My selenium is really surpressed, perhaps from Mercury, so I have to actually supplement it. Hashimotos thyroid-just changed to Armour. Hormones-do natural HRT through compound pharmacy. I do the B's and all that. Through it all, the hair on my head started falling out by the fistfull about 2 years after hysto. However , I did a trial period with an HGH lotion earlier this year and it all STOPPED falling out! I eventually had to stop using the HGH and within days of stopping, my head hair started falling out by the fistfulls again. Kathy

Guest guest
I have also had the problem with hair loss and dry, brittle, thinning hair. My nails have also been a mess. After taking high quality vitamins for hair and nails that contain silica and biotin (extra doses) there was some improvement. I have also started taking amino acid gelcaps.. 3 a day. I am finally seeing some improvement. I am also pulling my hair back into a scrunchee and not shampooing too often any more and which means using my " Ionic " hair dryer less. I was also told that when I shampoo I should really scrub my scalp vigorously to unclog the pores there and stimulate growth. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Beth, It's important to make sure you're getting enough selenium, too. 200 micrograms per day is a good dosage for many people. Too much selenium can cause this problem, too, so it's important not to overdo it. Many PWCs have mercury toxicity. Selenium forms a complex with mercury, taking it out of use for other purposes. I think that may be why many PWCs seem to be low in selenium. Selenium is important for the glutathione peroxidase enzymes, and also for the enzymes that convert the thyroid hormone T4 to T3. Low thyroid is another thing that can cause the hair to fall out, so these things might be related. Rich > Is hair loss a common symptom with CFIDS? If so, what happens to the body > to cause this? Guest guest
Two things helped me with hair loss and brittle ridged messy nails 1) Iron - I had low ferretin levels - it may be worth getting tested 2) Betaine HCL - I realised that the low Iron was caused by a lack of stomach acid. I now take betaine supplement which has helped my nails a lot Oh also MSM 1000mgs helped a bit but not as much as the two above Re: Re: hair loss I have also had the problem with hair loss and dry, brittle, thinning hair. Guest guest
I think there are several possible causes for hair falling out. My hair started falling out and it was from selenium. I was not taking very much, only 150mcg, but when I stopped the selenium my hair stopped falling out. Thanks, Doris
Guest guest
Hi. I have had that problem too. My hair in my my legs is often patchy, and when I was bed-bound in Hospital I clearly remember the nurses looking at me oddly when the pulled the bed-sheets off to find 'hair' on the matress. I guess it must be hormonal? Hmm. Ben. Re: hair loss I think there are several possible causes for hair falling out. My hair started falling out and it was from selenium. Guest guest
I'm certainly no expert, and haven't experienced that myself, but hair loss can be a symptom of stress and/or malnourishment. Make sure that what you're able to get down does have enough vitamins to sustain your body. I can't imagine that having a brand new baby at home would be stressful, would it? (totally being sarcastic). Give yourself a little credit Paige, and take life one day at a time. Good luck > > Hi Everyone > > It has been a while since I posted. Guest guest
HI before my daughter had her myotomy she lost most of her hair - and it was put down to malnutrition. She is 24 weeks pregnant at the moment and I am just praying that everything will be ok. she has been fine so far. She had her myotomy July 03. --- Steve & Weingartz <skweingartz@...> wrote: > > I'm certainly no expert, and haven't experienced > that myself, but hair loss can be a > symptom of stress and/or malnourishment. Guest guest
Hi Paige, Good to hear form you again! There are two causes of hairloss that come to mind - malnutrition and copper toxicity. You need to see that your diet contains lots of red meat, zinc, Vit B12 and 6. Some kiddies vitamins have copper in them, but not a lot. Can you take any vitamin syrup or supplements - they do make a difference ! Unfortunately the sort of food most of us can eat is fattening and not always all that nutritious. I have to cook mine to destruction before I can even make soup of it. Enjoy your little one - and remember all those disturbed night and tiredness do make for an underlying stress. Guest guest
There have been quite a few references about hair loss lately. In some cases it may be Alopecia Areata. There are many other types too, but this is the most common. My son in his 40's developed Alopecia a few years ago. He had a beautiful head of hair, and all of a sudden within two months he was completely bald. It was frightening! Our Doctor sent him to a Dermitologist who diagnosed him with Alopecia Areata... She prescribed Prednizone which I know is a very strong steroid, and can only be taken for a short period of time. She did not guarantee it would work, but in fact it did and his hair came back in full. That is not to say it won't happen again, but for now he is fine. She told him it was not nerves and the cause of it is unknown. It is apparently part of the autoimmune system... Who knows, another mysterious disease which no one has real answers for. There is tons of information on the internet though, and lots of suggestions as to solving the problem. I do think it is worthwhile going to a Dermitologist for diagnosis. As far as I know it was a simple blood test. Hope this information is helpful to some. All the best to you all, and here's wishing you good health in 2005. , Vancouver, B.C. Guest guest
I wonder how many of us have hair loss due to lack of nutrition in our body because we don't absorb proper nutrients that keep it healthy. My sister-in-law had thick hair also and when she finally got sick with muscular dystrophy her hair fell out and was very thin. She was not eating properly and was actually malnourished as a young adult. When I started on Recuperation (adding in magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium), my hair is now thicker, grows faster and I get it cut sooner, and I no longer have to use conditioner. And yes, I color my hair! Dr. Balch in Prescription for Nutritional Healing says we need higher levels of supplements than " normal " people because we don't absorb them as well. Just a thought. in La Selva Beach CA Re: Hair Breaking ... or Hair Loss? Carole, the one and only time I ever went to a hair salon was when I was a " sweet young thing " and had my half-ton of hair. The stylist was so perturbed because she ran out of hair rollers and had to borrow the extras of a fellow stylist to use on me. It was the actual quantity of individual hairs coming out of my head that she was ill-equipped to deal with. Today? The same stylist could do two of me... Good luck. > >> > > >> > If your hairloss is directly due to meds - you > >> could always reduce > >> your > >> > dosage or look into how your meds are interacting > >> with hairloss > >> hormones " ie > >> > DHT. I heard Spiro is also used to combat female hair loss as well, but I haven't a clue why I am losing more than usual. I'm thinking it could be hormones because I haven't felt like myself lately. I have thick hair to begin with, so I'm not too concerned about it. It's not an alarming amount of hair loss, but it is more than I am used to. I will say though, I think the Spiro is making it grow faster - I guess this is a good thing. Kathy

Guest guest
I didn't notice a hair loss, but this could have happened gradually. Never had a problem with balding. Recently noticed body hair on arms and legs is getting longer, and spouting in adjacent areas. Mentioned to my Dr. and he said Biotin promotes hair growth. I have been getting biotin in both multi-vitamin and b complex vitamin. Also recently had mercury amalgam fillings removed, took OSR#1 to chelate mercury and lead, and have been doing Bikram Yoga (stretching in sauna) for past 10 months. Maybe a combination of factors has helped. http://generalmedicine.suite101.com/article.cfm/truth_about_biotin_for_hair_grow\ th >

Guest guest
I believe that they live in hair follicles, so it would make sense that they affect the health and structure of hair. Two suggestions: I did have some hair loss, but it's gotten better. I pay a lot more attention to my scalp now, using rosemary oil and peppermint in a carrier oil on it, sleeping in hair conditioner with EOs like rosemary helped me a lot. Epsom salts made the biggest difference. After about a month of doing these at night (dissolving in water, pouring over head, drying on skin with a hairdryer) then my scalp problems were pretty much gone, and the hair loss has stopped. This might be hard to do if you work in an office, but you could treat yourself as soon as you got home.
