No. I didn’t hear that listed as a companion supplement and it hasn’t been recommended to me before. I know my Ca/Mg balance must be out of whack. So, if I’m not getting cramps without the Mg, wouldn’t my levels already be adequate? Calcium is not a companion nutrient to iodine. This topic has veered away from iodine so it really should be moved to the Iodine Off Topic Group. Thanks! Kathleen

Hi Chris

Cramps and spasms are related to the calcium/magnesium balance. I find it hard

to imagine that magnesium might cause cramps, but if it does, it would be

because this balance has been upset.

Dr. Bob Lawrence writes: " The occurrence of muscle cramp …, is well known to be

associated with calcium deficiency.

The normal therapeutic daily dose is, at least, calcium 1000mg and magnesium 500

mg. These are best taken at night because calcium levels tend to fall most

significantly during sleep when muscle cramp is most likely to occur. "

http://forum.ldnresearchtrust.org/index.php?showtopic=39

To say that cramps are from a calcium deficiency, and spasms (twitches, restless

legs, etc) are from a magnesium deficiency may be an oversimplification, but

supplementing with both throughout the day has eliminated the problem for me

(and I have MS).

Interesting that I gave up dairy yesterday, and for the first time in months,

maybe a year, my toes were cramping as I was trying to get to sleep. I realized

that even though I took my usual cal / mag / D supplements, I was missing the

calcium from my diet.

I've found that taking some extra cal / mag / D whenever cramps or spasms start,

usually works as fast as taking an aspirin. In about 20 minutes they're gone.

This is the supplement I use:

http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=VS-1087 Take 2

of these when cramps (or spasms) start and they're gone in 20 minutes, for me

anyway.

Magnesium is what would get rid of cramps, not cause them. Magnesium is a muscle relaxer, calcium is a muscle flexor. Sometimes potassium is out of balance, you might want to check on that. What mg supplement are you taking? Donna in IL I’m wondering what to do about the companion supplement Mg I’m taking. It’s waking me up at night with strong muscle cramps in my feet. I stop taking it and I don’t get them. Any thoughts?

I'm just wondering how essential the Mg is and will my symporter issue improve without it if I'm taking all the other companion nutrients. I've taken cal/mag supplements before and things improved when I went off of them. I know someone mentioned Mg isn't supposed to cause cramps, but it has for me. I know this is a Ca/Mg balance issue. I would just rather not take anymore supplements. I already seem to take enough to be a meal unto itself.

here is something you may want to look at.

Potassium deficiency also known as hypokalemia

Abnormal heart rhythms (dysrhythmias), especially in people with heart disease

Constipation

Fatigue

Muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis)

Muscle weakness or spasms

Paralysis (which can include the lungs)

Hypokalemia is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the level of potassium in the blood drops too low.

Possible causes of hypokalemia include:

Antibiotics (penicillin, nafcillin, carbenicillin, gentamicin, amphotericin B, foscarnet)

Diarrhea (including the use of too many laxatives, which can cause diarrhea)

Diseases that affect the kidneys' ability to retain potassium (Liddle syndrome, Cushing syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, Bartter syndrome, Fanconi syndrome)

Diuretic medications, which can cause excess urination

Eating disorders (such as bulimia)

Eating large amounts of licorice or using products such as herbal teas and chewing tobaccos that contain licorice made with glycyrrhetinic acid (this substance is no longer used in licorice made in the United States)

Magnesium deficiency

Sweating

Vomiting

Symptoms

A small drop in potassium usually doesn't cause symptoms. However, a big drop in the level can be life threatening.

so magnesium deficiency may cause potassium deficiency

potassium deficiency can cause muscle spasms or weakness.

Maybe a blood test is inorder.

I have cramps every night so bad I am screaming in pain and then crying. I have tried numerous things/products, and I take Calcium Citrate and two 400mg capsules 2x daily of magnesium. I also have tried nano-Ionic Calcium/Magnesium and apple cider vinegar & water, Calm Plus Calcium. I am at my wits end and if I had a gun by my bed, I would've used it many times because the pain of these cramps which are in the back of my legs above my knees, in my calves, and in my feet. They are de-bilitating!!!! I don't know what to do, and I can't take this pain nightly much longer. I don't sleep but an hour in intervals (last night it was almost every hour, like clockwork, as these cramps go on and on all night, so I rarely get any sleep. Does anyone else have cramps this bad? I don't have MS, but I do have spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, a bulging disc, an abdominal aortic calcification, Dercum's Disease & Lyme Disease with several coinfections. Yep, I'm a physical wreck and I do see a naturopath ocassionally, but she just recommended mag caps with potassium. Please, if anyone knows why these occur so frequently, please tell me what to do. I don't have a mainstream physician, and I don't want one. I am only interested in natural healing. I also was told by a mainstream doctor that I need a hip replacement. Not going there ever, but maybe this is part of this pain because I have severe arthritis in my left hip.

Thanks for any and all advice~L.P.

It could be that you have too much calcium. If I were you, I would leave out the calcium, and take a good quality magnesium – mag chloride, mag citrate, most any form except mag oxide, as your body is hardly able to absorb any of this form, and is basically useless. You could have too much calcium, which can cause cramping. Our lifestyle in general easily gets calcium, but is difficult to get magnesium. Also, try an Epsom salt bath before bed, as that is mag sulfate, and will absorb directly into your body. You could also use magnesium oil directly on your body, especially your legs to get it absorbed into your body. You could also be lacking in potassium, which can contribute. Did you try the mag caps with potassium your natropath recommended? They could be a help. Donna in IL I have cramps every night so bad I am screaming in pain and then crying. Are you taking any B Vitamins? I would consider a B Complex. What kind of potassium and how much are you taking. There is a good blend of Vit C/Ca/K/Mg that I use and it has helped with cramps because it is balanced. I took 1-2 scoops / day. You can purchase it from www.vrp.com and it is called BalanCe. Very soon I will have my office set up and I can offer some of these items to the members of the list but at this point I have no storage to stock up on the basics.

Have you seen a Chiropractor? Ask them when you call how they would deal with your issues and explain the problems you are having. You will want to find a skilled doctor that knows how to handle injuries / degenerative issues. but you may get some relief.

My boyfriend had leg cramps last night and I sprayed magnesium oil on his calves. Also, epsom salt baths would probably help. Eating bananas daily also. You may also want to try homepathic arnica for the muscle cramping. Concentrate on more magnesium, not calcium.

I wanted to add one thing about the magnesium. I was taking tons and I still

had a very low level of mag and had lots of anxiety and felt very tense most of

the time.

My doc said some people do not absorb very well that way - with all of your

other issues, I would suggest you get your magnesium through bath or oil

directly on the skin. You will absorb it better that way. I bet you are not

absorbing the pills you are taking.

I am a HUGE milk drinker, and try to get raw milk when I can afford it, so I mostly just drink organic, sometimes get the kind in glass bottles with the cream on top, but unfortunately these are all processed (ugh!) So, maybe I do have way too much calcium.

I don't have a bath tub as I had it removed when I upgraded several years ago. had trouble stepping in and out of the tub, and I'm just not a bath person, so my muscular/skeletal issues were in full swing even back in 2004.

I have Ancient Minerals Mag oil and gel, but for me it is the consistency that is odd and I tried to put it on my legs at night but found I couldn't turn over and stuck to the sheets. It was awful!! I do use mag spray for deodorant and it works beautifully, plus it's so much healthier than the regular aluminum-filled crud that most people use.

Here is what I'm taking, so please jump in as there must be something I can eliminate. Thorne Potassium-Magnesium Citrate(70mg Mag Citrate, 99mg Potassium Citrate) and Thorne never has suggestions on how to take their supplements, and my doc didn't say in her notes.

Premier Research Labs Premier Magnesium Glycinate, 100mgs, 1 capsule 2x daily. Twin Labs Magnesium Caps(magnesium 400mgs as magnesium oxide) also I steer clear of excipients and Twin Labs uses them, so won't buy anything from them anymore or Nature's Way. I notice they have Magnesium Stearate. I like Premier Research Labs products and they use NO excipients.

I like RegenerativeNutrition.com I took all the products I've been using from them (Bee Pollen, Barley Grass Juice Powder, Lugol's Iodine and a few others ) to my naturopath a couple of weeks ago for testing to see if they like my body, and every one was positive.

I will skip the calcium tonight and will try what suggested and that is to rub apple cider vinegar on my legs.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my cry for help, as I truly appreciate all the feedback.

I don't have a mainstream physician, and I don't want one. I am only interested in natural healing. I also was told by a mainstream doctor that I need a hip replacement. Supplements are costly, so now I am careful what I purchase and I do the research. The B-complex & ALA I've had for ages, but the exp. date is still good. My naturopath carries a ton of stuff and has her own little store downstairs, but I try to order mine online and she understands this and that I am on a fixed income as her visits are $200 each time I walk through the door and out of pocket, and that's why I don't see her that often.

I am done with chiropractors. They have hurt me, insulted me, overcharged me and not one has ever done anything to help but are always SO eager to put me on an expensive treatment program. My naturopath recommended getting in touch with an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Koo who practices at the University of Washington Hospital, who uses a person's own stem cells which he injects into the hip or knee to be treated. I haven't done the research on this, but will be doing that this weekend.

I will look at the Vit C/Ca/K/mg product you mentioned.

I am on a fixed income and disability, so finances are tricky especially out of pocket.

Thanks for your help :-)

Vitacost sells different brands of products. Which product are you saying contains excipients and other fillers? Where does it say that?

They are too numerous to mention , but I find that the NSI (Nutraceutical Science Institute) Brand in almost everything has magnesium stearate and some have soy which is a filler. I wrote them an email about this, but they never responded. I have stopped using vitacost for this reason. There are other *Off* brands that don't have excipients. You just have to read the ingredients label and become a savvy shopper. Also: GMO'S are in our food supply (even some organic as I eat ONLY organic foods & meats) and if it has a soy derivitive in it and it doesn't say NON-GMO, then it is a genetically modified soy product. SO many people aren't even aware that they are eating food which will create neurological issues down the road because of GMO'S (Genetically Modified Organisms)
