It could be stress related, not the iodine. I can’t remember the specific name of it, but lowering stress, feeding adrenals can help it go away. I had one for about six months, when life eased up, it went away. The only thing that has changed for me is the addition of Iodine, so I am assuming that this is a detox symptom or the iodine is messing with my hormones etc. My question is, what is the best way to reverse this and prevent more? It's called alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, and I have it. Stress is my trigger so if stress is one of your detox symptoms and you are prone to autoimmune or have antibodies showing you might be, the stress could easily trigger it.Have you felt more stressed since starting iodine? More anxious or anything?Kate.Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 1, 2011, at 4:56 PM, "harringd932" <dlhpsu@...> wrote:

Donna is right.... it could be totally related to stress.I have a cousin who lost all his hair after being under a stressful situation. Upon seeing that his hair was falling out he became MORE stressed which mademore hair fall out. The more he stressed the more his hair fell out........ until he lost all his hair.He was in his early 20's when this happened. His hairDID grow back!Healing thoughts," We are all in Mind and Mind is always creating for us as we think; and as we are thinking creatures, always thinking, our happiness depends upon our thought."From: Donna Iler <Donna@...>"iodine " <iodine >Sent: Thu, September 1, 2011 1:26:09 PMSubject: RE: Hair Loss as a detox symptom - what to do

Thank you all. I really don't think that it is stress. I think that it is newly

taking iodine detox and heavy metal detox. I am not sure what to do except for

pulse dose or lower the dose. I was taking about 5 iodoral per day.

My brother who is a naturopath suggested remedy for adrenals is:

Adrenal-Cortex Complex (predigested glandular concentrate) by Enzymatic Therapy.

It is highly absorbable.

I thought so. Sometimes it's not angry stress but adrenal or bodily stress. Anything that stresses your system. Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 2, 2011, at 2:50 AM, Deidre Houston <dlhpsu@...> wrote:

Not sure Deidre.

The name of the Adrenal-Cortex Complex has changed to ADRENergize. There are 41 reviews for this product on vitacost. http://www.vitacost.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-ADRENergize/?pd_section=pr

The product cost $9.00. Most of the comments indicate it is related to stress.

If it's totally smooth I would tend to think it's alopecia. I had it about 20

years ago. It really concerned me when I found the first spot, then a couple of

days later I found another spot, first was circular and second was more oval.

Dermatologist treated with cortisone shots directly into the scalp and it grew

back fairly quickly. I would check into adrenal issues.

I think that I may have an answer to the hair loss. When I started the iodine,

my naturopath said that it caused heavy metals to show up and that I needed help

in detoxing (with iodine). She gave me chlorella. At my next visit, she said

that I was detoxing too fast and that I should stop taking it. I didn't, because

I figured that I could handle it. I also started taking spirulina. A little

searching today showed that these both have a lot of beta caratone in them and

the excess can cause hair loss. Perhaps this is the cause? Therefore, both are

going to be discontinued or pulse dosed to see if it helps. I am still going to

pulse dose the iodine, because I see so many talk of the benefits of taking a

break. To your health!

Deidre,

Just to let you know or maybe you do, Chlorella contains iron. I always make sure I don't overdo with too much iron since high iron is so problematic.

Low iron can be a factor in hair loss. Also, my hair loss was linked to cod liver oil and flax seed oil.   It fell out on four separate occasions, each time after resuming the oils.   You'd think I would have learned the first time but I really didn't believe it was the oils.   However, it was the ONLY change I had made just before my hair started falling out.   I had a long gap between time two and time three and then decided to give the cod liver oil a go again because I was still sceptical and strongly believed it was good for my health.   My hair fell out again!   Then I thought I had nothing to lose and a few months later started cod liver oil again (my hair wasn't growing back yet) but within a couple of days the rest of my eyebrows (I'd still had half of them left) and all my eyelashes fell out.

I read an article by Ray Peat about PUFAs being bad for the thyroid but can't find it online.   However, there are a couple of articles, if you search for PUFAs and thyroid and some information if you search for cod liver oil and hair loss.

It's probably no consolation to you at the moment but I really got used to not having hair.   I was devastated to begin with, but once I shaved the bits that were left and got used to having a shaved head it wasn't such a big deal.   More a vanity issue.   But very nice to finally have it back!

Putting on 20kgs was a much bigger issue for me.   However, at least I'm now losing that.On Sat, Sep 3, 2011 at 2:00 AM, harringd932 <dlhpsu@...> wrote:

Yet another thing for me to consider, because I also take fermented cod

liver/butter oil. Perhaps, I really need to back off on most of my supplements

and see what the culprit is. So far, I have had an opportunity to blame iodine,

chlorella, spirulina, cod liver/butter oil. Geesh! Thanks for your idea. I am

definitely going to back off. Perhaps I did too much all around the same time.

I that really interesting that you lost hair as a result of fatty acids and

fish oils as you said they are really good for you. I do take fish oil and

I can't forget something that Ray Peat said that stuck, seed oils are for birds.

Here is that article mentioned. " A series of studies about 20 years ago

showed that the functions of the thyroid hormone are all inhibited by

unsaturated fats, with the inhibition increasing in proportion to the number of

unsaturations (double bonds) in the fat molecule. "

http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/unsaturatedfats.shtml

We stopped the Cod Liver Oil recently and stopped all of the other oils long

ago. We eat 99% Virgin Coconut oil now. The 1% is when we eat out. No doubt

Soybean oil, yuck...

Interesting Cod Liver Oil was deemed to be the cause of hair loss. My wife says

her hair loss increased after she quit the CLO, BUT coincides also with her

increase of Iodine. Her hair loss increased after we increased from 25 mg up to

125 mg then 275 mg and currently at 425 mg. In her case, it has seemed to be

the Iodine increase bringing even more toxins out, even though we did the

standard 50 mg/day for 3 mos a few years ago. We both got our familiar old acne

back again after we thought we had gotten rid of it, but from what we have read

recently, more Iodine is needed to detox than originally thought, and we have to

agree. We want to get these toxins OUT once and for all, and if hair loss is

what it takes, then so be it. One would think the hair will grow back later

after the detoxing decreases. We need to have a Bromine test I guess to see

what the load is. I don't really need a test to see it, but who knows how much

it is unless you do. My wife has breast cysts that we want to stop as well as

her Mom, who has cysts throughout her body. Undoubtedly Iodine

deficiency/Halide toxicity.

Will keep looking for any info on hair loss including here.

Thanks!

A couple of things here:

1) This discussion has veered away from iodine and should be taken to the OT

list.

2) I'm uncomfortable with the assertion that fish oil or cod liver oil is going

to cause hair loss

in the majority of people. I'm not prepared to come up with links, but I

caution people about

accepting on face value these ideas. That said, I take flax seed oil myself.

So it's also

incorrect and counterfactual to claim that all seed oils are toxic to humans--

some of them

are, some of them aren't.

3) Ray Peat is not infallible and I can go to his works and point out a number

of places where

he's incorrect. But we are not here to discuss Ray Peat.

As the moderators are constantly having to remind people, tempting as it is to

wander off

topic, we have to be stringent about staying on topic here. Our more than 5,000

members

all have things about iodine they'd like to say, and that's already more than we

can handle

without also entertaining all the off topic conversations we could all be

having.

Sorry to have to be a gatekeeper, but that's what moderators are for.

best wishes,

I'd like to make some distinctions that I believe need to be stated even though this is off topic.

(1) There is a difference between unrefined cold pressed oils and oils that use heat to process it. Cold pressed oils are processed without heat and thus the preferred oils to purchase.

(2) There is a difference between Flax Seed and Flax Oil. Flax seed contains the 3 key components ALA, fiber and lignan where flax oil only contains the one component of flax seed, the ALA thus the flaxseed has the proposed anti-cancer properties.

(3) Overdosing on Vitamin A causes hair loss. Different brands of Cod Liver Oil have different Vitamin A content and some are very high in Vitamin A. The best brand of CLO is Carlsons.

Oils that are processed with heat is the toxic oils.

Re: Re: Hair Loss as a detox symptom - what to do
