I have just come back from my annual eye check up with high eye pressure (25/27)

- I've increased my iodine in the last couple of weeks, am taking all the

companion nutrients and wondering whether the detox could be causing this or

whether I'm looking at a low thyroid related symptom? Any thoughts?

Hi ,

Low thyroid (untreated) can cause glaucoma. Do you take thyroid medication too?

25/27 means the pressure for each eye?

I am new to the group and my emails don't seem to get delivered either.

Hi ,

When I first began Iodoral, I took 1 tablet of 12.5 mg and my eyes were bloodshot for a couple of days. And then when I increased to 2 tablets a few weeks later, my eyes were bloodshot again. So perhaps this is a detox symptom for you.

Wow, every time my thyroid hormone is low, my eye pressure goes up. Luckily both

my ophthalmologist and holistic doctor realize this. Once I get my thyroid

hormone optimized, eye pressure goes back down. This has happened to me twice. I

get my eye pressure checked every 3 months because of this. V

I just want to add that my pressure is around 23 when thyroid testing (FT4/FT3)

is low. I like eye pressure to be at least below 20. It is normally between

15-17 when thyroid hormone is optimized. I can usually tell my thyroid hormone

is low when my pulse starts to drop and then I get both thyroid hormone and eye

pressure checked. This doesn't happen often with me but it does happen. V

I am not taking thyroid medication. Though I am suspicious that it is a thyroid symptom too.Currently I'm trying to reduce a multi nodular goitre/inflammation and am a BC survivor. My labs always come back OK and regular doctors do notthink there's a problem, and I'm having a difficulty finding a highly recommended holistic endocrinologist/doctor who can tell me definitively whether I need support. Eye pressure can go up with HC use. It's a side effect that affects only a few.

Wonder if the iodine is somehow affecting your cortisol levels?

You could be a hyper responder to cortisol. Although rare, some people experience cushing's symptoms on very little amounts of cortisol.  On Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 11:07 PM, Alison Trotta-Marshall <atmarshall1@...> wrote:

Do not know about your case, but it's been proven that low thyroid causes

problems with the trabecular meshwork of fluid not flowing correctly causing

increased eye pressure or glaucoma, of which as I explained before I am a

primary example.

Well good luck, as sorry to say, getting a doctor to correctly treat thyroid

disease is not easy. Sounds like you need both iodine and also thyroid hormone

with a multi nodular goiter and a being a BC survivor. Maybe someone will chime

in and suggest a doctor for you. There are also a lot of good thyroid chat rooms

to join. Shomon has one " thyroid@... " and NaturalThyroidHormones.com

is another good one. V

Graciela and others I worked my way up to only 12.5 mg iodoral/day and I noticed that on my recent eye exams, my IOP had risen by 1mm in each eye compared with before I started the iodoral. This of course could be just coincidence, or normal variability or something else but I did want to chime in that my experience has been similar. I plan to increase to 25mg soon and I will be curious to see if my IOP goes up another mm or so. A complicating factor is that my hypothyroidism is not well controlled on a low dose of Naturethroid. I am on my way to increasing that also but I was expecting that the iodine would help to minimize the thyroid hormone that I need. Not sure that it’s working out quite that way. Possibly because of adrenal involvement. thank you Stan for your feed back. I believe my eye pressure could also be due to due to adrenal issues. I'm also in 12.5 mg.of Iodoral.Comments on the site were saying that you may need to address adrenal before dealing with Hypo thyrode. I'm in two grains of NTH plusIodoral and all the companion supplements, but I have not tested for RT3 so I don't know if that could be an issue.I tried liver cleansing on and off but I can tell if that is being addressed properly. I will keep searching for the next step.Graciela From: S. Altan <AltanS@...>iodine Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 1:18:07 PMSubject: RE: Re: high eye pressure

In my case iodine had nothing to do with high eye pressure....it was from

inadequate thyroid hormone. Of course adrenal instability can cause problems

with thyroid hormone as cortisol is needed at the cellular level for thyroid

hormone to enter cells. If adrenals are not working properly this can cause

thyroid problems. Iodine added to the mix can be troubling if adrenal or thyroid

hormones are not working correctly. It's a balancing act.

Shorting yourself on thyroid hormone because you want the iodine to take

the place of it is, imo, the wrong goal and as you are finding, sets one's

health back. I find this obsession with lowering thyroid hormone to be

counterproductive. I suggest that you find your best dose of whole thyroid

replacement and don't worry about the number. Then as your body utilizes

the iodine over time, you may be able to adjust the dose. But quality of life

is

what should be the goal, not some arbitary number regarding thyoid

hormone replacement. We live in a toxic environment and if your thyroid

function has gotten imbalanced it's better to just get it balanced through

replacement and nutritional therapies. The thyroid is the engine of the

metabolism, which governs not only our energy levels but our brain power

and emotional stability. Quality of life is totally dependent on thyroid

balance

and function, and health is the achievement of that balance, not some

perfectionist ideal that you're going to get your function back. Sadly, few do.

But the point is to achieve healthy functioning and quality of life.

To repeat, do not plan for the iodine to lower your need for thyroid hormone.

That's not the way to health.

Over three years of increasing iodoral, I have been ableto decrease my Naturethroid. I was on 3 grains of NT w/ 1 iodoraland three years later am on 15 iodoral and 1/2 NT, althoughI increased iodoral slowly because my liver clogs easily.I too suffer from eye pressure which has not resolved w/iodoral,(although many other things have resolved)but since my adrenals are not healed yet, I think the adrenalsare responsible.-AliOn Aug 29, 2011, at 6:31 PM, maribob7 wrote:

I don't think high eye pressure will resolve with iodoral. It's low thyroid

hormone that has been proven to cause high eye pressure. Using iodoral to lower

thyroid hormone can be tricky and I myself wouldn't try it. Hopefully you are

having thyroid blood work done to make sure you are getting enough thyroid

hormone. You should be tested for TSH, FT3 and FT4. If adrenals are not working

correctly, this can affect your thyroid levels. So basically your adrenals could

be causing a problem. V

Dear Sorry for this delayed response, you can see that I’m way behind in correspondences. High IOP can happen among other reasons as a side effect to some medications and herbal preparations. I would suggest reviewing your medications and researching whether any of them have reported this as a side effect. If you are taking any herbal preparations for adrenal support, those frequently contain licorice root. Prolonged use of licorice root is known to also increase IOP due to its actions on cortisol. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.
