Guest guest Posted June 24, 2001 Report Share Posted June 24, 2001 Dear Friends, The following a profile of the latest subscriber to eFORUM [Moderator] Executive Director, SURAKSHIT Mrs Jessy SURAKSHIT, an NGO of Delhi working on Integrated Urban Community Development Programme in slums of Delhi which include, education, community health, Mother & child nutrition, income generation, adolescent girls/boys, women's health and violence, RCH etc. The entire program is with special emphasis on women and children. The working area is north-west Delhi. The following is an eye view of the activities which are already under progress by the organisation in this community. All the programmes have given an emphasis to women and youth in the community. 1.. Health sector activities a. Conducted training and awareness programme on hygiene and sanitation b. Conducted training programme for promotion of breastfeeding 1.. In coordination with the respective MCH centre and the IPP VIII centres children under the age of 5 years are regularly given pulse polio drops. 2.. Regular immunisation camps are held in coordination with the MCH centre. 3.. Pregnant women are regularly having medical check up and followed under the Matri Suraksha Abhiyaan. 4.. Apart from these referral services are provided in coordination with Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Mangolpuri as and when required. 5.. Regularly conduct Diarrhoea Management programme in which we educate the mother regarding the ORS & ORT. 6.. Counselling for mothers on HIV/AIDS 7.. Awareness program on HIV/AIDS 2. Economic activities: a.. Conducted training and services given to the community for bank loans and savings b.. Conducted training programme to formulate Thrift and Credit Society The meetings of the community specially women and adolescent girls are conducted time and again at least once in fifteen days to monitor the progress of the programme activities in the community as well as inform them about the forthcoming activities from time to time. Income Generation: The general perceived need of women is income generation. Cutting and tailoring, and pickle making are already an ongoing work. Effort is being made for upgradation of skills of the fields of chalk making, screen printing and toy makings are in the pipeline. 1.. Coordination with local water supply department when there is paucity of water. 2.. Preschool and Primary Education: Identification of children in the age group of 0-5 yrs and linking them to the existing balwadies and later on linking them to the relevant primary school. 3.. Environment Education: General awareness sessions on environment upgradation and cleanliness are provided. Awareness programmes conducted in collaboration with the MCD school.
