This week begins my fourth week on Iodine. I have increased energy and maybe a

slight bit better sense of well being but that would the extent.

My big concern is the weight. I am probably 15 to 18 lbs overweight. I eat very

well; mostly all food is organic and at the very least no chemicals. I am have

had some slips on the GF but most every day is GF. I elimiate food and yet my

clothes are tight. I will need to buy the next size in shorts and really do not

look forward to this.

I really thought I would see some shift as I weaned off from the HC, but no. In

fact, I think it has gotten a bit worse.

I am working with a nutritionist to get off from the HC and work with a more

natural alternative (licorice) for my adrenal issues.

I am taking the following:

Topamax (epilepsy)

Thyroid S 4 1/2 grains

HC (weaning) 5 mg

B6

B5

B2

B3

B12

Selenium

Zinc

Magnesium

Coq10

Vit C

D3

Iodine (50mg)

Adreset

Metagenics Symphora

L-tyrosine

I add chia seeds (ground) to meals two to three times daily. I am drinking

licorice/tulsi tea and nettles tea at least twice daily.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Dietary choices are an interesting thing and when someone says " I eat very

healthy " or in your case, " I eat very well " there are just too many variables.

What one person considers healthy may not mean the same to another. When an

acquaintance went gluten free they also filled the gap with gluten free

crackers, pasta's, breads, etc... and gained weight in the process. Starches

and carbs are the culprit in that scenario.

This was also front and center on my mind because of the recent article on

Mark's Daily Apple titled " When Eating Healthy Is Making You Fat " . An

interesting story about that individuals journey:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/when-eating-healthy-is-making-you-fat/comment-pag\

e-5/#comments

I'm of the thought that most people fit in the Paleo/Primal dietary realm but

have a hard time wrapping their minds around that thought or what it means, and

there are variables within that realm as well (for example some do really well

with dairy, others don't). That said, Bill Wolcott (who worked directly with

Dr. Kelley way back when) developed a very intriguing system to determine each

individual's metabolic type. His book is The Metabolic Typing Diet:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps & field-keywords=met\

abolic+typing & x=0 & y=0

So that was a spiel about " diet " :-)

In regards to the iodine protocol someone already mentioned unrefined salt and

also liver cleansing so I would just add that perhaps ATP Co-factors might boost

your internal metabolism? You have B2 & B3 on your list but perhaps modeling

them after the ATP Co-factors recommendation for the iodine protocol (for

quantity and timing) would help?

Do you know your free T4 & free T3 results? You may be dealing with rT3??

Thyroid S has fillers & additives that are not without impact on the body. For

instance amongst the many listed is Lactose... I have a relative that is

lactose intolerant and even the small amount used in a medicine will cause

issues and if taken in an ongoing basis, weight gain. Not saying this is your

story, just that the fillers and additives in medications are not without

impact. The fillers/additives/dyes in Thyroid S look to be quite a bit more

than what is found in Armour or Naturethroid.

Topamax also has an interesting (and depressing) fillers & additives list. Also

interesting that a common side effect of Topamax is weight loss, but that has

not been the case for you.

What type and amount of magnesium? The majority of people are deficient in this

major mineral, electrolyte and component of ATP ... those with epilepsy seem to

be more so. Perhaps consider taurine as well.

And just a mention that 100 mcg/day of K2 with the D3 is recommended by many

holistic or integrative Dr.'s. Not sure if that would help with the energy or

weight loss but just thought I would toss it out there as the research for the

benefits of it are compelling.

As Armour has now come back onto the market and has been reported to work, I

have a script and will have some within the week.

You mention the substitution of GF crackers, etc for what I may have been

eating. Starches and grains are eaten in limitation (2/3 times) on some days.

On others usually once or not at all.

I know that a cleanse is really sounding like a good thing, but I have read and

my nutritionist agreed, that because I take the Topamax, a detox is not a good

thing. Unless a cleanse and detox a different?

Salt: I have used the Celtic sea salt in the past and found that it made me

retain water. I understand the relationship with sodium and fluid in and out of

cells. I am going to try this again.

Exercise: About 2 1/2 years ago, I was an avid fan of strength training and

then my adrenals would not tolerate any of it. I couldn't even do a a Yoga burn

dvd without feeling week and my heart racing. I miss it like you would not

believe. I would love to start again but fear compromising my adrenals again.

I will look into the Atp Cofactors.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

,

Yes, I still have my thyroid. I agree with the high dosage of Thyroid S. I

believe I have an RT3 issue. I am working with a doctor who, rightfully, wants

to deal with adrenals first. We are then going to focus on the RT3. She ran my

labs in the afternoon after I had taken my meds and it showed an RT3 issue. I

will be going back and have her run them before I take the Thyroid meds and get

a clearer picture.

When you mention binding globulins. I am guessing that I can ask for a lab to

gage this? Can you explain further? My doctor will run pretty much anything I

ask and if she doesn't know what I am talking about she will research it. I was

amazed that she knew what RT3 was!

Have you heard of Qi Gong? It is a very gentle form of yoga. The breathing is

what is emphasized. However, you can work up to a pretty rigorous program. I

took it slow with a guy who has videos on PBS. They are excellent.

Hope this helps. Can't think of the name at this moment and they are at home,.

Will try and remember to post the name when I get home. LOL No promises

though!

The information is in the guide to supplementing that you received when you joined - or is in the FILES of the group.

Buist, ND HC

weight

I know there has been a discussion on here recently about weight gain, but it was a bit scattered and I can't remember precisely how to go about dealing with it. Can someone give a concise overview of why we are gaining weight on the iodine protocol and what are concrete strategies to take to address it? I'm starting to feel a bit panicked about it.

Thanks for being patient!
