Guest guest
writes: **Speaking of Water retention... what does one do to battle that problem? ** DRINK A LOT OF WATER! Funny as that sounds, the reality is that the less you drink (in terms of water without caffeine or sodium) the more your body tries to "hold on" to fluids. So, drink, drink, drink! And keep your sodium intake at a moderate level. Also, excess carbohydrates hold onto fluids. Its a chemical principle that always holds true: water binds to carbs. So, the less carbs, the less fluid. Keep carbs moderate, too. a "I have yet to hear a man ask for advice on how to combine marriage and a career." - Gloria Steinem
Guest guest
I find that it takes about 3-4 days after a free day to rid the body of excess water from water retention .....Celery seed is a good/natural diarretic. I am not offcially following BFL YET...but absolutley intend to but I definatley drink a lot of water now... the best solution is of COURSE lots of water lots lots of water.......and I tkae a few celery seed capsuales. On another note I keep sodium intake very low....I find the fat free dressings quite high in sodium and never add salt to my food... Ihope this helps... --- <nankeb@...> wrote: > Speaking of Water retention... what does one do to battle > that problem? Guest guest
Drink more water, have some coffee, reduce salt? No worries! Kit PS-last advice is most important. Practice deep breathing.
Guest guest
> when you retain water as I do and have all my life, the first thing > the doctor will do is restrict further water intake. I've always heard drink more water to flush it out of your system. I've had this problem for years, even have a diuretic for it, but it was prescribed a couple of doctors and a several years ago. I don't know that it would interact with my current medications, but I dont' want to risk it. Normally it goes away after several days, I never now when it's going to hit. It was really bad when I was pregnant, I'm not sure why, but it was.. then again you always hear pregnant woman complaing about their swollen feet. So my legs are growing > again. He's keeping me off but doesn't want me gaining too much > weight so he'll be putting on something else within a few days. He > expected the weight gain. So far I haven't really had too much of a problem with it going into very high into my legs, maybe 4 " above my ankels. I dont' notice much difference in my hands or face either, but then again I dont' tend to wear my rings or stare at myself too much in the mirror > You might want to discuss with your doctor water/fluids restrictions > and see what he says. I take a shower and gain 10 pounds. (smile). I guess I should discuss it with her, but I don't know when I will be in next. I guess if this continues for another week or so it will be time. I am a little reluctant because when my last Dr put me on the diuretics the DX: he put down was CHF (congestive heart failure). I was like EXCUSE ME? I was 24 at the time and had NO other symptoms of CHF, just water retention. Anyhow I've gone on babbling again! Thanks for the info! a

It depends on the cause of your water retention and your doctor's personal preferences. Way back in the 1970's when I was in nursing school (and when I was a kid on diets in the late 1950's & early 1960's) fluids were always restricted. When I last worked in the 1980's, water was encouraged for everything but kidney failure and congestive heart disease.
Guest guest
You may be right about that but my cardiologist still advises me to restrict fluids. I don't have a heart problem either but, as I said before, do retain fluids. He's treating me for that and also to get my HDL up a bit. He has done that. Guest guest
I increased my water intake, as the body holds on to water if you don't drink enough. I average a gallon per say. I also eliminated table salt, but will occasionally use celtic sea salt. > > Anybody have any ideas on how to minimize water retention? I have been feeling bloated and " puffy " lately and even the trainer at the gym noticed it last night and said it looks like i'm retaining a lot of water (i almost punched him, haha, men). I'm not PMSing so it's not just the normal thing, it actually has been for the past six months, I think my birth control (the patch) has something to do with it, or it's just odd timing. any ideas? Guest guest
To minimize water retention drink lots of water and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Try to include fresh vegetables with most meals instead of only two. Steer clear of high-sodium convenience foods and heavily processed carbs. Check out the Lean Out or Swell Up menu for an example: http://www.skwigg.com/id55.html On 11/9/05, Shumaker <heathershu24@...> wrote: > Anybody have any ideas on how to minimize water retention? Guest guest
Loved the website on leaning out vs. swelling up and can definitely pinpoint some things I can do to improve on the water retention issue. I do eat string cheese, protein bars and a few other things that may be high on the sodium side so I'll try to replace them with healthier options. I appreciate the input and I'll let you know how the changes affect my " puffiness " , thanks, I love this group, it's really keeping me inspired!! heather --------------------------------- FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click. Guest guest
I heard about the potassium theory too, I guess it's abundant in some fruits and veggies and that's why they help you lean out. Check out the website someone posted yesterday on the topic, it's very enlightening. --------------------------------- FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click. Guest guest
There's no recommended daily allowance for potassium. Most people would never need to supplement with it because it's so widely available in foods. People who do take potassium supplements usually do so with medical supervision because potassium has a big and potentially dangerous impact on things like blood pressure and heart rhythm. If your goal is to get lean and healthy, the best source of potassium is lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Guest guest
Oh man, I'm all for a long soak in the tub! We have an old clawfoot tub and it's oh so comfy. I'll give the oatmeal a try even before I start tx I'm sure. lol Ugh... I'm with you on the headache scene and I've been having some whoppers since I started taking Cymbalta. It makes me tense and that triggers the headaches because of an old neck injury. My messages are going to get short real quick once I start tx because the headaches I get now make the light hurt my eyes.
