Guest guest
They have special stuff for swimmers ear at the pharmacy. From: amandashepheard <amandashepheard@...>Subject: Iodine for Ear Infectioniodine Date: Thursday, July 14, 2011, 10:25 PM My son has been pulling at his ear recently. He says it doesn't hurt but weve been to the beach and swimming a lot. Before I started him on Iodine orally he was on the verge of adnoid and tonsilectomy. Praise God for Iodine and for you all! So I was wondering if it is safe to put Iodine in the ear if so how should it be applied.Thank you all for all your advice!
Guest guest
Do not put it in his ear. It stings like crazy! Really bad. You could try half hydrogen peroxide and half water, but even that gets warm and tingles. It depends on his ability to manage discomfort. A lot of times ear stuff comes from sinuses so you might try a neti pot with warm salt water in the sinuses. You might ask if his ears itch, if that is the case it could be thyroid - that is one of the symptoms of hypo. Guest guest
If it is an infection I would use warm garlic oil http://www.ehow.com/how_2181310_warm-garlic-oil-ear-infections.html I would not put iodine in the ear. It will probably be too harsh. Buist, ND Iodine for Ear Infection My son has been pulling at his ear recently. He says it doesn't hurt but weve been to the beach and swimming a lot. Guest guest
I have been able to determine that iodine is safe in the ear. Previously I reported here that there is a scientific paper out there that claims iodine can cause deafness if it gets past the eardrum. I have never believed it was really true, but the claim still bugged me and I've thought about it every time someone asks about ears and iodine, and as a result I have not recommended iodine in the ear. So I looked it up. There is just the one paper that makes this claim although it is cited elsewhere on the web. This is the abstract, it's kind of long but just bear with me: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6977984 >It had been suggested that disinfectants which could trickle into the >middle ear through a perforated drum during the skin sterilization >preceding otosurgery might cause inner ear damage resulting in deafness. >In animal experiments it has been shown that chlorhexidine, benzethonium- >and benzalkonium chloride, when introduced into the tympanic cavity of >guinea pigs, will cause rather extensive damage to the neuroepithelial >receptors of the inner ear. In the present study, iodine, frequently used >for skin disinfection, has been investigated as regards ototoxicity by >locally exposing the middle ear in guinea pigs. The duration of exposure >was 10, 30, or 60 min. The animals were sacrificed 2 weeks later and the >organs of Corti and neuroepithelial receptors of the vestibular part of >the inner ear were studied as surface preparations in phase-contrast >microscopy. It was found that slight damage had occurred in the basal >parts of the organ of Corti of those ears exposed to iodine or iodophor in >70% alcohol for 60 or 30 min and damage to the vestibular receptors was >observed in ears exposed to iodophor in 70% alcohol for 60 min. In ears >exposed to iodine or iodophor in aqua dest., no damage to the inner ear >sensory epithelia was revealed. Check it out: The report says that iodine in 70% alcohol caused ear damage. Then it says that iodine in water ( " aqua dest " ) did not cause any damage (read that last sentence). So the answer is, the ALCOHOL damaged the ears, NOT THE IODINE. " Aqua dest. " is demineralized water (distilled water, like we use in Lugol's). But of course the title of the paper, and the abstract, still makes it sound like iodine caused harm, when it's crystal clear (as water! that the iodine was NOT the source of the harm. I've seen liquid iodine suggested for ear infections in various places on the web, and I now recommend it. And this is just another example of how it's really important to read beyond the title of articles and papers on the web and not be taken in by the titles. -- At 10:23 PM 7/14/2011, you wrote: >If it is an infection I would use warm garlic oil ><http://www.ehow.com/how_2181310_warm-garlic-oil-ear-infections.html>http://www\ ..ehow.com/how_2181310_warm-garlic-oil-ear-infections.html > >I would not put iodine in the ear. Guest guest
Here is also a link to an article by Dr Mark Sircus, on the use of iodine instead of antibiotics (and gives the science of how iodine kills pathogens), and it also references the use of iodine for ear infections. Dr Sircus hasn't always been up to the minute on his iodine info, but this article is great information and I didn't find anything I disagree with. Except for he quotes a person talking about using Atomic Iodine when Lugol's is perfectly safe and much cheaper. He discusses colloidal silver but says that iodine should be tried before that because the body requires iodine so it's a better first choice, which I find to make sense. http://www.naturalnews.com/022800.html I also don't always agree with Natural News's point of view but this is a really good article. -- At 05:39 AM 7/15/2011, you wrote: >I have been able to determine that iodine is safe in the ear. > >Previously I reported here that there is a scientific paper out there that >claims iodine can cause deafness if it gets past the eardrum. He has not needed antibiotics in so long and they didn't seem to do anything for him when he took them (I see why now), I just didn't want to put him on them again. Guest guest
, I've used iodine in my neti pot for a horrible sinus infection. I used it yesterday for the first time and so far it's been fine. It does kill infection and I don't know why it would hurt as long as you don't put too much in it. I used 20 mg drop of Lugol's. Guest guest
My daughter uses colloidal silver for her son's earaches. She says it works surprisingly well. I used to use hydrogen peroxide, 3%, for my earaches. It worked. Just a couple drops. Some people use olive oil or coconut oil. I think those could work for a minor infection. Iosol, diluted 50-50 with olive oil, would likely work. Guest guest
I loved this article, and it has made me continue to question if I really need that antibiotic when I go under the knife, if I am taking iodine already. I hate to take an antibiotic as I have worked SO hard to clear my body and am still fighting cancer and Candida! Any thoughts on an alternative to the IV antibiotic during and after surgery and/or the Amoxycillan they have prescribed? AS an aside, the antibiotic craziness is at an all time high here in NY. Our supermarket is giving all antibiotics for free!! Guest guest
I had my appendix out in December. From the minute I arrived at the hospital, they were trying to put me on prophylactic antibiotics. They took a urine sample, & claimed I had a UTI. I told them I had no symptoms, & didn't want antibiotics. (As far as I'm concerned, if I have no symptoms, my body is fighting off the infection.) Then they confirmed that I had a hot appendix, & again tried to give me antibiotics "in case my appendix burst", which I then refused. Then they made me sign a form stating that I had refused antibiotics against medical advice. Then I met the surgeon, & explained to him WHY I was avoiding the antibiotics so hard. (I had had two rounds of C. Dif, & it took a LONG time to recover from each time.) I lucked out & he was a really good guy. We hammered out an agreement that as long as the infection was confined to my appendix, he would not give me antibiotics. But he said that if my appendix had burst or the infection went beyond my appendix, he would check with the pharmacist & give me antibiotics that were effective against C. Dif, to prevent my having another round of that. And in the end, he apparently kept his word, because I didn't get any antibiotics as far as I know. (And I'm pretty sure I would know. They can give you antibiotics while you are unconscious, but they can't keep you unconscious long enough to miss the diarrhea, etc.)The problem, of course, is that they will never get punished for giving you antibiotics, even if they kill you. But if you get an infection, they will be hassled for not preventing the infection with antibiotics. Overtreatment is ALWAYS community standard of care in this country -- redundant over-testing, C-sections... And as you say, the overuse of antibiotics leads the pack. If they gave you antibiotics, in their minds, they did everything they could do to protect you from infection. (Um, have you ever heard of CLEANING your HOSPITAL?)You are really at the mercy of your surgeon. He can do whatever he wants to after you are knocked out -- & he will. If he is a good guy, & you convince him that antibiotics have made you really, REALLY sick in the past, you might convince him not to use them unless you get an infection. (Bear in mind that the infection rate in some hospitals is quite high, so even if you are healthy, you could easily acquire an infection there.) But if he's not a good guy, he is going to do whatever he wants, no matter what he promises, & then just make an excuse. If you want to borrow my C. Dif symptoms to make your presentation dramatic, I had horrible, continual diarrhea with agonizing cramps, & eventually copious bleeding. While I was actually on Floxin, I pretty much lived on the toilet, & I pretty much cried continuously. Once I was off the Floxin, I had short breaks between bouts of diarrhea. The cycle would start with the ferocious cramps, getting worse & worse, until I suffered massive bleeding. The cramping was better once the bleeding started, but the bleeding was scary. Then I would have another short break... My second round of C. Dif was caused by a dental antibiotic -- something a lot less toxic than Floxin. But I don't think you ever get rid of those C. Dif bugs, & they come out of hiding at the slightest opportunity...If you talk him out of the antibiotics, make sure you have lots of vitamin C with you at the hospital, & maybe olive leaf extract & a few other things to help you fight infection. Don't rely on luck. And if you can't talk him out of antibiotics, just beef up with probiotics & chlorella & every good thing for your digestive tract you can think of when you get home.AnneOn Jul 16, 2011, at 7:10 PM, marcyzram wrote: I loved this article, and it has made me continue to question if I really need that antibiotic when I go under the knife, if I am taking iodine already. Guest guest
Anne, thank you so much. I have been worried about how to handle this and I am going to give it a BIG try. I only wish I had thought of all this earlier, so could have called the surgeon and talked to him--he makes himself available for that. I am especially troubled in that, for the first time in a long time, I have a very stubborn yeast infection. I am on triple probiotics, and have my Vitamin C powder ready to drink....I hope hope hope that I can avoid the IV antibiotics. I will definitely not take the amoxycillan afterwards. Thank you especially for the C-diff symptoms. I will use those. In fact, I HAD those recently, but no cramps or bleeding. I am so very surprised that they let you get away with no antibiotics. I am a little frightened myself of NOT having them, being cut open and all. I simply cannot imagine that he will say ok to no antibiotics. Just isn't EVER done around here; very traditional. Sigh. More yeast on its way. I'll let you know what happened! Guest guest
Hi Marcy,And everyone else.I'm new to this group ... I found you off a link someone postedon a MMS blog.So far, it sounds wonderful. Not to scare you (but to warn you, in hopes that the samedoesn't happen to you) 2 years ago my father was killed by an antibiotic ....Levaquin. If at all possible try to stay away from this one. It is criminal that thisdrug permanently injures and kills people each year and the FDArefuses to pull it off the market.Taking this drug is like playing Russian Roulette.Blessings, Iodine for Ear Infection> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >My son has been pulling at his ear recently. Guest guest
Here's the Mayo Clinic definition:Clostridium difficile (klos-TRID-e-uhm dif-uh-SEEL), often called C. difficile or C. diff, is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications. In recent years, C. difficile infections have become more frequent, more severe and more difficult to treat. Each year, tens of thousands of people in the United States get sick from C. difficile, including some otherwise healthy people who aren't hospitalized or taking antibiotics. This definition politely declines to mention that people do, occasionally, die from it. I was blissfully ignorant of the fact I could die, at the time. And my regular doc was on maternity leave, & the doc I saw in her place treated me like a hypochondriac housewife & just sent me home.Anyway, this is a bug that tries to take over your whole gut when antibiotics wipe out all the good bugs. It seems to be able to withstand most of the normal antibiotics, so it is sometimes the only one left standing after antibiotic treatment. And it took me a LONG time to get my gut healed! TWICE! Guest guest
You all are so wonderful and filled with great information. While I was researching alternatives for the ear infection I found out about Pau D'arco. This is a tree bark and that acts like and antibiotic/antifungal that promotes good bacteria, it has also been used to treat cancer. This is something I feel we all should have in our wholistic medicine cabinet. I ordered some to try and get rid of the yeast overgrowth I got from this bout of anitbiotics. I could have kicked myself for taking them but you know how it goes. At the time you really feel there is no other choice. Now that I have pau d'arco I do have another choice. One question I do have though! I have been taking 182.5mg lugols daily for some time. I really thought this would have staved off the cellulitis I got. What are your thoughts on this? I not only take this but also chlorella/spirulina and cayenne pepper daily. With all this I was surprised to find out that I had an infection. Could I have done anything to prevent this? Guest guest
,My children were prone to getting outer ear infections from swimming in a lake. The pharmacist we buy from is a scuba diver, and she told me to mix 1 part vinegar to 1 part rubbing alcohol, fill the ear canal, let sit for about a minute, then dump out. The vinegar kills the bacteria, the alcohol dries out the moisture. We now use this after swimming in the lake to prevent getting the infection in the first place, but it also kills the infection if you already have it. Guest guest
Donna-- You'd be a lot better off using vodka or Everclear in their ears instead of the isopropyl. Anyone who cares about their health should absolutely MINIMIZE contact with isopropyl alcohol, also known as wood alcohol. It's a serious poison and probable carcinogen... so you know how they wipe you with alcohol and then stick you with a needle? really not good. Dr Hulda believes that exposure to wood alcohol seriously impairs health. I know she's controversial but if you saw what wood alcohol does to things. Plus did you see my post recently about iodine in the ear and the research they did? Iodine is fine for ears but alcohol (if it passes the ear drum) causes damage. -- At 10:49 PM 7/19/2011, you wrote: >, >My children were prone to getting outer ear infections from swimming in a >lake.
