Guest guest
Today I finally went to see my GP with the results of my (privately done) Thyroid Screen, Adrenal profile & Hair Mineral Analysis. I absolutely hate going to the doctors about anything, and I have been putting this off for weeks. I was dreading the appointment as I haven't met a " good " GP I felt I could talk to in years. Last week I handed in copies of all my results & a covering letter and today I booked a double appointment and saw a GP I hadn't seen before (Its a large inner city practice with over 10,000 patients). The GP I saw was quite open minded. He looked at my results with interest which was a relief as I was expecting him to " poo poo " the hair mineral analysis and the adrenal saliva test. I explained that I had been studying the thyroid & adrenal glands and that despite having had a normal TSH test results for years that my recent results show I have TPO auto antibodies and that this, and the adrenal problems may well have been causing my ongoing fatigue & ill health for the past nine years. I explained that this has probably been active for years but has been missed by me not having a full thyroid screen. I also showed him my low afternoon cortisol & my low DHEA levels and I explained that while the 9am cortisol test the GP did came back " normal " , my afternoon cortisol is very low so this test gives a better picture. I told him that I understood that the NHS does not recognise anything other than Cushings & s but that many of us are suffering with adrenal problems that fall inbetween these extremes. I was shocked that he nodded his head and agreed with me!! He then admitted that he was " out of his league " with the thyroid/adrenal issues and he is referring me to a local endo. I did ask if he would refer me to Dr Skinner as he is an expert in this field, but he said that they would not refer me outside of the region if there are endos in Bristol because of budget reasons. I didn't push him on this. He agreed to test my selenium, copper, zinc & magnesium (all the other vits were tested recently by a gastroenterologist) so that I could ensure my thyroid is functioning as best as it can vitamin wise. We also discussed the high level of Arsenic & Uranium shown in my hair mineral anaylsis and he said he had no idea on how to treat this but to see what the endo says about my thyroid/adrenals and then see if he recommended that I am referred to a biochemist?? He said he had never had to deal with anything like this before. I know I will probably be referred to a crappy Endo (I'm going to have " choose & book " which should give me the choice of 3 hospitals in Bristol) At the very least I have educated this GP a bit about thyroid/adrenal issues and I really hope that this might help other patients he deals with that may have thyroid/fatigue issues? Regarding the referral to the potential crappy endo. This is not ideal, BUT I had resigned myself to self treating privately (with the supervison of the lovely Dr P). I will make sure I study as much as I can regarding the thyroid & adrenals and at the very least give the Endo I am referred to a good run for his/her money!! Maybe its the help & advice of all you lovely people, or maybe it's all that vitamin C helping my adrenals, but I am feeling in fighting spirit!! Take care all, x
