Guest guest
I am a patient diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Recently (for the last week or so), I have this burning feet and hands thing and I am worried that it might be something neurological, but then I realized that it could be my hypothyrodisim as well. I know that some of you have already written about the " burning feet " complaint, but do any of you experience it in hands as well ? My complaint sometimes becomes more pronounced in a single finger. I know that burning feet and hands have a rather detailed differential diagnosis scheme, just wanted to ask whether any of you have experienced it due to hypothyroidism. All the best, Tolga

Dear Tolga, I have burning feet and hands too as well as Hashimoto's disease. I have had burning hands and feet on and off for about 12 years. I have tried many things to get rid of it. It seems to be caused by two things (i) diabetes (ii) demyelination of the nerves. I am not quite clear about what happens with diabetes, but I know that many people with diabetes end up having limbs amputated because of some problem to do with sugar in the blood and oxidation. This destroys the nerves and causes pain and ultimately destruction of the tissues. Demyelination of the nerves is caused by lack of vitamin B12 which in turn seems to be caused by bad absorbtion of food through the gut due to celiac disease, gluten allergy or candida or a mixture of two of them. This is what I think is wrong with me. The more I think and read about it the more I am convinced that hypothyroidism is a malabsorbtion problem. On the recommendation of Val from the RT3 group I tried taking Alpha Lipoic Acid, Thiamine (a type of vitamin B1) and Vitamin B12 in very large doses. This was not a success for me but I know that other people have tried it and it has worked for them. However, later on I started taking vitamin B12 when I was on a gluten free diet and I notice an improvement in my feet. So this confirmed my suspicion that I am suffering from a neuropathy caused by a malabsorbtion problem. However, the huge doses of vitamin B12 I take do not seem to be getting on top of the problem. At the moment I am considering trying Low Dose Naltrexone for the pain in my feet and hands. I am hoping that LDN will be the thing that tips the balance so that my body can heal itself. MacG. THANK YOU. MODERATOR Thank you very much for your sharing your experience with me, this has been most helpful. Your thinking makes sense; B12 absorption may be impaired in some situations which may be associated with Hashimoto's. One of them is called pernicious anemia (an old name dating from a time when its treatment was not possible). It is known to cause B12 deficiency. It also causes a specific type of anemia though and I do not think it could go undiagnosed for years, so it probably does not explain your situation. Still, if this thing persists for another week, I will probably end up having an appointment with a neurologist. How long do your episodes of " burning " last, if you do not mind me asking ? Guest guest
"How long do your episodes of "burning" last, if you do not mind me asking ?" Years! Luckily it's not agonising, just wearing. It stops after a while if I get off my feet, but that's not terribly practical. So it doesn't stop me sleeping. But it comes back every morning. Guest guest
Hi Tolga, I am also just recently diagnosed with hashis and I have suffered with burning hands & feets for many years. I always felt it was a viral or inflammatory thing as I sufffered with Epstein Bar Virus which I have never properly recovered from? But this is just a gut feeling with no scientific basis! I totally agree with when she talks about malabsorption being at the heart of many problems. The more I read the more I see everything coming back to malabsorption issues. Good luck in sorting it out! x > " I have this burning feet and hands thing and I am worried that it might be > something neurological, but then I realized that it could be my hypothyrodisim > as well. Guest guest
Burning hands and feet are usually signs of neuropathy, that is, damage to small nerve fibers. This occurs fequently following many meds, as well as diabetes etc.. I suffered from neuropathy for many years following a prescription for antibiotics. This class of antibiotics (as well as many others) are known to cause neuropathy. Might be worth searching if one of your meds can cause neuropathy. I am now getting tingles in feet and hands, not had this for many years, but there was a different a trigger. Now I have this along with other symptoms in my previous post, am wondering if hypothyroidsm can also cause tingles in feet!! > > > > > Hi Tolga, > I am also just recently diagnosed with hashis and I have suffered with burning hands & feets for many years.
