Iodine is needed in EVERY part of the body, not just the thyroid. Iodine is protective against breast and many other kinds of cancers. Best,, Kathleen

There is no iodine in thyroid hormone, as far as I know. (Somebody correct me if I am wrong.) Where did you get that idea? Yes, you're correct, Anne. you're under the wrong impression about

thyroid replacement. In fact no, if a person is on 100% thyroid

replacement, they ARE NOT getting iodine and need it just as much as

someone with a thyroid.

i think that you are right and that is the reason  the adrenal group give for them not needing iodine.the point is that all parts of the body needs iodine and you need it for the detox especially of bromide.cancer prevention and especially breast cancer is another reason

There are some doctors that tell patients that you will get your iodine from thyroid hormone (T4 - being 4 iodine molecules). This is totally incorrect. This iodine is bound to the protein thyroglobulin and is not available for use. It's like saying that you can pull eggs out of bread to use for cookies. It is bound to the flour,etc and cannot be pulled out. Likewise thyroid hormone's iodine cannot be separated from the hormone and used for other places in the body.

Iodine is bound to thyroglobulin in the thyroid cells. It is then released into the blood stream and when it finds the receptors on the cells, they are inserted in like a lock and key mechanism to be used for metabolic functions. Using Iodine to bind to the protein is only one function of iodine. When you take the medication it has already been bound (if desiccated) and if it is T4 only then you are dealing with synthetic materials and the components are totally useless. Remember that iodine and iodide are required by the entire body (every gland and mucosal lining). You need to ingest iodine/iodide so that it is absorbed into the blood stream to be captured and used by the body.

Iodine is required to MAKE thyroid hormone, but that doesn't mean that the

iodine is then available to the body. It's not.

We know that the adrenal group is INCORRECT in its advice about

iodine. Wrong. They perpetuate the lies about iodine that Western

medicine perpetuates and I don't see how anyone ever gets any healing as a

result of the advice on that list.

Anyway, the whole point of the iodine protocol is that the tiny amount that

thyroid hormone MAY provide the thyroid, or the tiny amount that is the RDA

for iodine (150mcg), is NOT ENOUGH for what the body's needs are. Please

read the New Member Document for the facts.

Dear and Anne and all , I don't have the faintest idea what the adrenal group says about iodine or Western Medicine for that matter. So, I will need a little clarification from you on that point. I seem to have unwittingly picked up ideas that sound just like theirs and are unwelcome here in this forum.I was sent to this group by someone in the LDN( low dose naltrexone) group who has had great success with iodine. I have had this fantasy that if I were getting just the right nutrients my thyroid would start working again the way it mysteriously stopped working.I thought maybe iodine was a part of the answer.I will try to write my question more clearly, Since the thyroid requires iodine to make thyroid hormones and that requirement is no longer present when taking oral thyroid hormones

because the iodine needed is within those molecules already, Do people taking replacement TH still require supplemental iodine in addition to iodinized table salt?I would like some clarification on this point. It has been the sticky wicket keeping me from trying this hopeful therapy.In case it makes a difference, i was on high dose steroids for 2 years. I lowered the dose to only 4.5 mg but I can't reduce any lower without throwing up. So that is to say my adrenals I assume are in need of repair. Maybe iodine can help? I have Hashimotos Encephalopathy and I am treated for hypothyroid but my labs are good so that is taken care of.Healing hugschris

It is in the wheat flour in the US. But it is possible to get bromine-free

flour if you make bread yourself.

Bromine is not used in Canada. I don't think we condition with iodine either.

Bromination is a process performed on the flour. If you go to the health food store & buy organic flour, it will say something like "unbleached & unbrominated." Many people on this list are gluten-free, & no longer eat any wheat flour or bread. Iodine is a vital nutrient, needed by your whole body, all the time, forever & ever, amen. In some cases, it can get sluggish thyroids working again. (A third of people can get off thyroid meds once they are iodine sufficient, & another third can reduce their meds.) Unfortunately, low iodine is not the only problem our thyroids have. But even if it turns your thyroid into SuperThyroid, you will still need continued iodine to KEEP it healthy. If our diet were totally healthful, you could get it nutritionally, but even then, you probably wouldn't get enough to counter-act the toxic halides. (Just by sitting in front of your computer to read this, you are absorbing bromide from flame retardants in your computer, which are aerosolized by the heat from the components.)Iodized table salt is a whole other issue, because it is bad for you. The iodine part would be good, but the rest of the salt is screwed up -- denatured & contaminated with anti-caking chemicals. We advocate unrefined sea salt, which doesn't have a lot of iodine, so again, you have to get the iodine elsewhere. So yes, you need more iodine than you can get from iodized salt, but you also need iodine to REPLACE your iodized salt when you switch to healthful salt.The idea has been enshrined in western medicine that iodine is toxic in more than tiny amounts, & that the tiny amount in iodized salt is all you need. We believe here that we all need a lot more iodine, & to avoid iodized salt. (These ideas tend to get countered rather quickly & emphatically for the sake of newbies on the list. Nothing personal in it.)One of the issues almost everybody on this list has is that we are all having MULTIPLE health challenges. Our food supply is compromised, our air & water are polluted, & we are struggling for health against multiple problems. Iodine alone can't miraculously cure everything that has gone wrong. Thanks Ido and everyone,I have another question. They say bread used to be made with iodine and now it is made with bromides. I have made bread and use neither iodine nor bromides. Is this something to do with yeast? I cannot make heads or tails or it?

That wasn't the purpose of putting it in. Iodized salt was created for that problem/ purpose.
