Guest guest
There are a few important issues here.First of all, we all tend to think in terms of one thing fixing all our problems -- even when we know that is not true. The question is not whether you should take iodine or LDN. It is entirely possible that you will benefit from taking both. But if you need the iodine, you need it whether or not you can benefit from LDN. You can have more than one problem, & they can require more than one solution. A lot of times people say you should try one thing at a time, but life is short.I am getting the impression that thyroid nodules are slower to respond than some of the other conditions. Or at least, mine is. I suspect that it might have something to do with how many iodine-deficiency issues you are dealing with. My thyroid was enlarged (though I didn't realize it, & no doc had said so), my breasts were dense, I have fibroid tumors of the uterus, I have always had hypothyroid symptoms, I was under ENORMOUS stress... Your body just can't fix everything at once. Even if you didn't know you had other problems at work, it is possible that your body is using iodine for something else first. If it is helping you, you should keep taking it. As things change, you may need to adjust the dose. Many people on this list have reported adjusting their dose of iodine as situations change. While I am glad for anybody whose problems are solved by 12.5 mgs of iodine, most of us are taking a LOT more than that to get results. This doc is obviously really nervous about iodine if she thinks 50 mg is the upper limit. Were you able to get her to read Brownstein at all? At some point, you may need to change docs, or go doc-free, if she is not open to things you are doing, or you have to turn responsibility over to her & do as she says. Some of us don't tell docs what we are doing about supplements (which has a different set of possible complications.) Some of us are so sick of hassling with docs whose philosophies don't match our own that we give up on docs. The more her views diverge from what you want to do, the harder it will be to have a professional relationship with her. But it is hard on your body to feel constantly torn. You have to figure out what you believe, & how much you want to deal with somebody who is working from another philosophy. A clearer sense of your own boundaries will make it easier to negotiate with (or stop seeing) your doctor. As to whether you need TH or not -- that is probably subject to change as you go along. Iodine can change the way your body works. LDN can change the way your body works. As your body heals & changes, your need for any particular intervention could change. The body is a dynamic system, & these substances can make changes in systems that have been malfunctioning for a long time. The uncertainty can be a bit hard to deal with, but it's part of the process. I think you need to come to grips with the notion that there is no single right dosage of anything that will fix anything permanently. If something seems right for you now, then take it. If it stops seeming right, adjust. You probably need more iodine to begin healing than you do to maintain healing.Diabetics who are on insulin don't automatically take the same dose every day. They check their blood sugar, & then adjust the dose accordingly. Unfortunately, there isn't a test the rest of us can take every 4 hours (or whatever) to verify that we are on track. It is a lot more ambiguous. But we still have to check in with our bodies constantly, & try to figure out how to adjust. (This is only harder if the person "helping" us is not open to what we feel.)It is clear to me, as I go along, that I need more than the iodine protocol to restore my health. And it is frustrating. I probably need thyroid meds -- but I would have to go to a doctor. And I have had so many frustrating associations with doctors that I am really balking at that. I am having auto-immune issues, & LDN might be a really good way to go -- but I would either have to find a doc or go guerilla... Believe me, I am sympathetic to your situation. We all want to see a clear path to our objective. Unfortunately, sometimes there isn't one.AnneOn Jun 20, 2011, at 6:58 AM, a Poppe wrote: After reading, what I've gleaned is that the LDN can improve my antibodies and help shrink my goiter. Assuming my doc will give me a trial with it, should I continue on 100 mgs of iodine while taking LDN, or should I back down on my dosage? What if she doesn't agree to the LDN? Should I continue on the same dosages of iodine since my antibodies are up? Should I go higher or lower with the iodine? I also just had another ultrasound last week, as my doc wanted to see if the iodine has had any affect on my goiter and nodules since increasing my dosage. There was no significant difference. I am wondering how long it takes to make a difference, because I can see where this is going with my doctor and would like to give a good reason to continue on a higher dose of iodine. I've already increased my iodine against her advice, as she felt that 50mgs was the highest I should go. She said that she's seen nodules shrink with 12.5 mgs of iodine. I also just started on a trial of Naturethroid, 1/4 grain, to address my continuing hypo symptoms, even though I don't technically qualify for it according to my labs. I've only been on it for three days now. I'm wondering if I start on LDN, if I would need TH. Also wondering if such a small dose of TH will have any affect - I'll just have to wait and see. a look at low dose naltrexonehttps://creator.zoho.com/ldndatabase/all-others/view-perma/Hashimoto/b7DaN4WGtfQsX8pXJpyKu0hxFENtVYWbeXAunN2VCPTj6jKpeDqVkJ3X9kPb7eZd79Ej0tJA9dERCEYfeBhPP6A0ruf4tdSqmP48On Sun, Jun 19, 2011 at 12:48 PM, a Poppe <ppoppe@....com> wrote:> **>>> **> Yes, I am gluten free! Guest guest
a, You should stay on the iodine protocol (all companion nutrients) regardless of whether you do LDN or not, imo. How long have you been on iodine before the newest ultrasound. Just because you don't see shrinkage doesn't mean nothing good is happening. The body is working on the problem. Many doctors treat for hypo based on symptoms and not the labwork, because the labs are misleading. As Steph has discussed, TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone, so it's not the ideal indicator. There is no guarantee LDN will fix everything overnight either. I have Hashi's and I have not yet gotten to a place of being able to reduce my NatureThroid. On the other hand, I've lost 35+ pounds over the last year I've been on LDN and the iodine protocol. That's been such a blessing. You're in charge of your health, not your doctor. If you don't want to stop the iodine, if you don't want to go on to the doctor's next (cutting) recommendations, then don't do it. -- >After reading, what I've gleaned is that the LDN can improve my antibodies >and help shrink my goiter.
