It would be a good idea for somebody to collect all 'the things

doctors say' to those patients suffering with symptoms of hypothyroidism. I had

one woman telephone me who told me she had told her GP that she was losing her

body hair and now had no hair growing in her armpits - to which the GP said

" ….you can't grow hair there 'cos you're too fat " . Grrr!

I have read the messages regarding the comments made by GPs to TPA members and

it is upsetting to know how arrogant and clueless many GPs are. I considered

printing some off (without names/emails) to show friends and fellow sufferers.

I then thought it might be interesting for other GPs, our MPs and even the GMC

to have sight of what is going on in surgeries and endocrinology departments

all over the country. They might even like to read the poems! If you think this

is a good idea then we could all send in our experiences and take it from

there.

Hi Margaret,

I didn't expect such a can of worms to erupt when I started this off to vent my

frustration and anger at the way you are looked at and presumed to be the author

of your own misfortune. Your idea sounds like a good one to me as its only when

large numbers of people get together to protest at the sheer madness that is

infecting those responsible for the nations health as unless something is done

about this sooner rather than later, the cost to the NHS will far exceed proper

investigation and treatment RIGHT NOW. Count me in....

Hi ,

I am glad you agree. We need to devise a way for people to post their

experiences so that they are together in one place on this site. My husband

suggested a blog but I know nothing about blogging I am afraid. I hope

everybody will write in again with their experiences with the NHS and perhaps

just using the heading above we could collate and print off/email to every MP,

TV stations, Radio, GMC, GP surgeries, endocrinology depts. and hospital

managers etc. People power is the only way to get anything done and if we make

it a little bit amusing then it will get their attention (she said hopefully).

Let's go for it - we might even get into print and have a best seller!

Hi Margaret,

I know nothing about blogging either however, it may be possible to set up a

file on this site which could be accessed by everyone and used just to post

their individual experiences relating to inappropriate and downright offensive

remarks made to them (keeping it clean and not vitriolic). It would be up to

the Moderators to say whether this is possible and of course everyone would have

to agree to some sort of publication although identities could be hidden if

used. Does anyone have any suggestions about this?

Hi ,

I am sure somebody could set something up for us. We need everybody to

contribute so that it doesn't look like it is the odd few people when it isn't

is it?

I remember talking to a guy at hospital who had complained about his treatment

or lack of it. The registrar had told him that he (the registrar) was 'a novice

at this' (endocrinology) so what chance do we stand? At least he admitted it!

I shall start work on a poem this weekend!

Many years ago, before diagnosis, when I asked my then Dr about the problem I

had with weight gain and the struggle to lose it his reply was " well, no fat

person ever came out of Belsen " .

There you go - now you can go to our FILES section of this

forum, open the FOLDER 'what doctors tell us' and put this in there. Also,

there should be answers to give to doctors such as him!

That may be true, but I remember reading somewhere that people who survived

these terrible concentration camps never had good health again.

From the Head of our local Path Lab in response to my second letter of complaint

about tests requested by GP and/or consultant not being done:

" " The measurement of Free T3 in the investigation and treatment of

hypothyroidism is generally accepted to be of little value "

I'm glad he's clarified that for me.

Please remember not to name any doctors.   In fact there is no need to even give their initials.    Just mention  whether it was a doctor, or an endo, or even perhaps a nurse.Lilian

Hi Sheila,

Thank you very much for that quick response.  This could prove interesting.

, whatever you have posted into the Files section tells me

that the file you have used is not being recognised. Please can you save it in

a Word doc. and then upload it please.

Little value to who?    It was not little value to me.     It was the difference between being very ill and possibly dying, after having a miserable home bound existence, or being well.   I would say that is a very big difference.

I was obliged to go to a private doctor and private tests to make me well - as our home page said the NHS would have killed me.Lilian

May not be true. In experimental starvation of a certain kind of rat it was

found that on death they retained their fat but lost a critical amount of lean

tissue.

Hi and all:

Sheila and TPA have set up a blogspot so we will have a place to voice the

idiotic things Doctors say to us. The Blog is open to the public so you may

choose to *comment* anonymously if you wish. In the drop down box for

commenting, you can use a gmail/goggle account which will publish your comment

with your name or you can choose to comment anonymously. The choice is yours.

The new blogspot address is ThinkThyroid.blogspot.com

and the blog about *What Idiotic Doctors Say...* is

http://thinkthyroid.blogspot.com/2011/08/idiotic-things-doctors-say.html

Thanks for suggesting this and I hope everyone will go over to the blog and tell

us what your Dr said !!

Cheers,

JOT

Just tried to post my comment in the blog spot (zero comments so far) and it

failed - so it isn't set up correctly.

I was trying to say that a GP I had refused to refer me to anyone else or do any

more blood tests unless I took Prozac for a while, even though I had no symptoms

of depression. He was so convinced, irrationally, that my symptoms must be due

to depression and not thyroid hormones that he tried to blackmail me into taking

a drug I did not want. Incidentally, it made me feel ill and I stopped it.
