I doubt if an iodine protocol would be the same for canines as it is for humans but maybe a small amount of iodine and/or potassium iodide would be good? One of my cats had a swelling in his gum when I started the iodine, and the swelling went away and hasn't been back. My dog also takes a selenium supplement for his skin. I add liquid Vit D to my cats' food a couple of times a week. Unlike human, cats can synthesize their own Vit C, but they require vit D to do it. Most of my cats (I have 8) are indoor-only, so I give them D3 so they can synthesize their C. They get turkey necks-raw( dogs can digest raw bones so there is no danger of splintering like there is with cooked bones) and raw beef bones as a treat 2 or 3 times per month. I used to feed a high quality dry food with the raw but I stopped that years ago, it's like feeding myself processed food only worse in my opinion. When I started iodine a few months ago I also gave each dog one drop on their food. My old dog is very healthy for his age but he was sleeping most of the time. Since I began giving him iodine he has perked up and doesn't sleep nearly as much. Both of my dogs weight around 55 pounds, does the weight of the dog matter? Do you suggest giving them liquid or can I give them Iodoral? Also what about the companion supplements? What I've found so far is that they do need vit C with the iodine. I'm finding that there are a lot of topical uses for iodine with dogs too, including tumors, cysts, mange, skin rash, hair loss ect. There is so much conflicting info out there I'm having a hard time sorting it all out. For now I plan to give my 155 lb older dog 1-2 drops of Lugols when I get it and try to do 1/2-1 drop for the 9lb dog. I'll do this until I can get better informed as to what they actually need. I do put it in their food because I know they will eat it that way. They get everything they need from that diet then add iodine. I have a Dal and he is prone to getting urinary stones and we have to watch his diet, feed very low purine diet meaning mostly chicken and no red meat or ogans. I put his chicken necks in water so he gets water to drink with his chicken, I can drop the iodine in the water with the chicken, he never forgets to drink that part of his meal. I was hoping that the iodine might help fight urinary infections. I mix water, yogurt with cranberry capsules or cherry juice extract capsules for him to drink during the summer months so he is well hydrated. This is the only way I can get him to drink more water. With the raw diet they don't drink as much. My dogs absolutely do not eat kibble, many years ago I did feed a combination of raw and good quality dry food, but I have been feeding my dogs nothing but raw meat and vegies for over 20 years. I'm a dog trainer and I tell all my students and everyone I know to feed dogs all raw food and bones and no grains. Even though I've read hundreds of books and articles and taken classes on natural canine nutrition I was not aware that dogs might need extra iodine. I was a veterinarian technician and my heart breaks for some dogs that are fed garbage kibble. It just makes the come back to the vet when they become ill. All pets fed an excellent diet rarely need a vet visit but the vets won't tell you that either. And that makes it even sadder........ They are so conditioned to feed them as they eat.So, I want to know about the amount of iodine. If both of my dogs are around 55 pounds is one or two drops a good amount? My cats drink more water when I put iodine drops in it. It put 2-4 drops in a bowl that is 2.5 gals big, and that gets changed regularly. Remember that whatever iodine your animal doesn't use, it will wash harmlessly out of the body in the urine. So you don't need to worry too much about dosage. It's like you eating a diet of nothing but bread and water your whole life except your bread wouldn't have 4d meat (diseased, down, dead,dying) euthanised pets ect,ect,ect and your bread wouldn't be baked for hours effectively destroying whatever nutrients might have been in the food before it was cooked, and the nutritional claims on the pkg are before the cooking process. I'm just guessing on the iodine dosage right now Louise, as said any excess iodine would be excreted in the urine, so I'm not going to worry too much about overdose. I was just being cautious since I'm new to iodine. I think 1 or 2 drops are probably ok for most dogs but I'm still researching. I don't run into many people that feed raw unless I'm on a dog forum for feeding raw. For me the first time I read about it I knew it was the right thing to do. I only wished I'd known about it sooner, I found out through the internet dong research on feeding dogs and at that time no a lot of people in the US were doing it, as you know.Another question about pets. I have birds, two macaws along with other birds. Do you know anything about birds and iodine. I have had a hard time finding info on this subject. I know that inbreeding of parakeets has caused a lot of issues with their lifespan. I'd love to find out more about iodine and my larger birds. Water is an issue, it gets dirty so fast and putting some iodine in the water might make it last longer than a few hours. Sometimes they use water to soak their food. Mineral blocks don't always work, they like to destroy them as a source for a toy. It's like you eating a diet of nothing but bread and water your whole life except your bread wouldn't have 4d meat (diseased, down, dead,dying) euthanised pets ect,ect,ect and your bread wouldn't be baked for hours effectively destroying whatever nutrients might have been in the food before it was cooked, and the nutritional claims on the pkg are before the cooking process. I'm just guessing on the iodine dosage right now Louise, as said any excess iodine would be excreted in the urine, so I'm not going to worry too much about overdose. I was just being cautious since I'm new to iodine. I think 1 or 2 drops are probably ok for most dogs but I'm still researching.
