Hi Folks

I would like to get our 7yo son's thyroid tested. Can someone point me to

reliable reference ranges for children's thyroid testing?

Thanks

My children were 4 & 7 when dx'd hypothyroid. What are you testing? You should be testing TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. The TSH range is way out of whack for children as it goes up to 5.5 or 6 something. The best places I have found my children to be is Free T3 in the mid 300's and Free T4 1.2 - 1.4. The TSH's are supressed as they are on Desiccated thyroid.

I believe the NTH group recently started a seperate group for children. I'm sure

they would have that info there. Jim

Hi

He hasn't been tested at all yet, but I will ask for TSH, FT3 and FT4. I expect

doc will do totals as well.

What would a health TSH for a child look like, if there was no thyroid med being

administered?

All he's on now is 12mg of iodine +supps.

I am not seriously sure he's got a thyroid problem, but he's just been

officially dx'd as developmentally delayed (ie. educable mentally retarded) and

I want to get all the ducks in a row to make his growth as easy as possible.

TSH is a pituitary hormone and not a thyroid hormone. I am not sure that there is a "normal" for TSH because in my mind as long as it is registering the body is calling for more thyroid hormone. We use the Free's to determine the status of the thyroid.

Sorry, I can't find the original message to reply to, but the lab will send ranges and the ranges are different for different labs so no one can actually answer this question. The lab should calculate the child's age into the range if that is necessary.
