She does look hypo on these labs. Iodine would help her body to produce the thyroid hormones that she needs. The weight gain may be because she has not grown her full height. I gained like 30 pounds a little younger than that and then went from 5-0 to 5-9 in a few months and lost like 15-20 of those pounds in the process. I would add the iodine and hope it helps her needing to rely on drs for thyroid meds as that is a nuisance. Pam

Hello.

I took my daughter to my doctor on Friday and I have her labs. I took her because she does not sleep, has heavy periods with cramps every 2 months and is gaining weight. I am hypothyroid and I was hoping she didn't get that from me.

Her FT3 was low and doc wants to wait 2 months and re-test the labs again- so no thyroid rx right now.

My thought was " Maybe I should start her on iodine " ? I am clueless when it comes to kids. Help.

TSH 1.51 (0.50-4.30)

FT4 1.2 (0.9-1.4)

FT3 3.2L (3.4-4.8)

She takes no vitamins- just eats a well-rounded 'diet'.

Thank You

Wow her FT3 is very low. I would feel horrible with that level. Most feel best in the upper 1/3 of the range. My children's labs looked better than those and we started them both (at age 4 & 7) on thyroid medication. It would be good to try some iodine and I would if in your shoes as well as selenium, magnesium, vit C and salt. My children take these too. Does she eat gluten? You may want to try to eliminate or drastically reduce it in her diet. Gluten is very hard on the thyroid - I know a teen is hard to control foodwise. One word of caution though. Don't let her sit with low FT3 too long. It is critical that she has adequate hormones during her development years. I have read articles about being hypo during the teen years and it leading to infertility and other developmental issues. It's pretty critical. The sleep issue may be adrenal. When thyroid is low for too long it draws on the adrenals for a back up energy source but they are the sprinters and not the marathon runners so they cannot sustain long and eventually get fatigued which causes a whole cascade of sex hormone issues.

How much would I start her at?

Also, I think she has a high cortisol problem as she has insomnia. The doctor

put her on 5mg melatonine.. I don't feel comfortable with this... Thinking we

need to do the 4-part cortisol test next?

My 11 yr old is on 25 mgs and has been for 2 years. If it were my child I would start at 12.5 mgs / day with 100 mcg Selenium, 200 mgs Magnesium and 1,000 mgs Vit C and see how she does. That is what my son is on.

Melatonin is a natural substance & an antioxidant, & 5 mg is not a terribly high dose. (There are a lot of autistic children who take twice that.) The inability to sleep is really hard on the body, so I wouldn't worry too much about the melatonin.AnneOn Apr 26, 2011, at 4:25 AM, alagonza2000 wrote:
