I just got the May issue of american baby and was very very upset. I know how

mainstream these mags are, but this was beyond the norm...

How unprofessional and dishonest is it to not mention the levels of mercury

administered with every vaccination those kids under 5 get, etc...

Not to mention that I heard (I'm waiting for a call back to confirm this...)

that WIC pulled tuna for nursing moms off their program because of the mercury

content...

I don't even know what to say...

SOMETHING FISHY (May 2001, pg. 24 americanbaby)

Seafood is generally nutritious because it's high protein and contains

heart-healthy fats, but new evidence suggests that eating too much of certain

types of fish can cause mercury build up in women's and children's bodies,

possibly leading to irreversible damage of the nervous system and kidneys. A

recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that

nearly 10 percent of American women may have mercury in their blood approaching

a dangerous level. The FDA now recommends that women of childbearing age,

nursing moms, and children under 5 avoid eating fish known to contain high

levels of a form of mercury called methyl mercury, including shark, swordfish,

king mackeral, and tilefish. Safe bets for seafood include smaller fish such as

bass and trout, salmon, shellfish, and canned tuna. The FDA says that women can

safely eat up to 12 ounces per week of these choices.
