" Vaccine Shipment Declared Safe, Ready for Use in Abbotsford "

In Canada, the Fraser Valley Health Region announced recently

that a shipment of meningococcal vaccine from Italy--which had

been feared ruined--has been declared safe and fit for use in

Abbotsford. According to the manufacturer of the vaccine,

Chiron, electronic thermometers shipped with the 20,000 doses of

the conjugate C vaccine show that the vaccine was never outside

the safe temperature range. During a recent outbreak of

meningitis in the area, seven people were infected with the

disease and two people died from it. A call has now gone out for

high school students and young adults up to the age of 29 who

study, work, or live in the Abbotsford region to receive

vaccinations against meningitis. Health Canada has not yet

licensed the conjugate C vaccine, but the vaccine--which

officials hope is more effective than the standard vaccine--was

imported under special conditions.
