On December 14, 1999, a previously healthy 3-month-old infantwas admitted to a hospital with diarrhea and jaundice, and acute hepaticfailure attributed to HBV infection was diagnosed. The infant died onDecember 17, 1999. The infant had not received her first dose of hepatitis Bvaccine until age 2.5 months.The infant's mother was found to beHBsAg-positive at the first of 10 prenatal visits. However, the prenatal-carerecord provided to the birth hospital indicated that the mother washepatitis-negative. Neither the provider nor the laboratory reported themother's test results to MDCH as required by law. In other words, is the vaccine, even for infants born to Hep B positive mothers, who have a high risk of it becoming chronic, (as opposed to everyone else - except for infants not born to Hep B positive mothers, who have virtually NO CHANCE of getting Hep , more dangerous than the disease?
