Guest guest
Hi Carolyn...I had decided not to vaccinate my son with anything except tetnus, when he started to walk. He recieved 2 of the shots before I got on this list and realized that he didn't need them, and that I had given in to my own fears. I regret vaccinating him for the tetnus (although thankfully not because he has had any bad reactions I am aware of), and wish I had learned of this list earlier, and had been exposed to all the information here... Guest guest
When my son reacted to a DTP vax I thought at first no more DTP. I then started researching and was amazed that it wasn't just " one " vax that was known for causing reactions. They all contain something that is a known poison to the human body. You really have to go with your gut on this. What I found in saying no to just a few was it gave a toe hold for the doctors and nurses to convince me I was wrong about the ones I was refusing. The only one I have left open for my children to receive is Tetnus. And that is on " if needed " schedule. I'm not sure where Pearland is. My daughter was born in Dallas. One of the books that I read when I was preg with her that was a great source of information was " Methods of Childbirth " by Constance A. Bean. It goes over alot of info, the most helpful to me was the birth plans. Selective Vaccs I am relatively new to the list...I've been lurking for a week or so and reading all the info I can find. I appreciate all the info you guys share! There is SO much to think about! I am only a couple of months pg with my first and am trying to learn all I can about everything. Whew! I was wondering.....are there folks here that vaccinate selectively? and, if so, which ones to you give and why? I'm kind of at the point in my thinking that IF we vaccinate at all, we would definitely NOT give all...just the ones that maybe have been around a long time....or something.....I really haven't formed an opinion yet, so don't yell at me I'm still at the info gathering stage. Guest guest
My hubby is being very supportive on my not wanting to vaccinate our as of yet unborn son. He has, however, expressed a concern about Tetnus. Any advice on what I can do to ease his mind? Also, my OB/Gyn just about had a fit when I calmly discussed my wariness on vaccines. She specifically mentioned Tetnus, saying "have you ever seen anyone die of lockjaw? it's a horrible death". She was also quite sarcastic, saying "Don't tell me? Guest guest
joanna, i would flat out ask her if SHE has actually seen anyone die from lockjaw--i sincerely doubt she ever has...it's actually much rarer than we are led to believe. just like most ped. NEVER see a case of meningitis in their entire careers, although if you ask them, they make it sound as though you're sentecing your child to death if you skip the vaxes. there arte quite a few people on this list who had the same concern as you and your dh about the tetanus. for me that one didnt' bother me so much as most cuts, even puncture wounds can be cleaned out and do get some oxygen to them (for tetanus, there cannot be any oxygen present, so it must be a deep puncture wound and even then it doesn't mean it will result in tetanus. brigit, in albany
Guest guest
The doctors HATE the internet, because we have access to information that we would not otherwise hear about (certainly not from them). When I decided not to vaccinate, Tetnus was my only worry. We own horses, and this is a major horse area. Not only that, but my husband has his own HVAC business and (God bless him) he is a slob, so I have junk around everywhere in the yard that a young child could step on and get hurt. I had him (my son) vaccinated twice for tetnus, before I got enough education about it to relieve the dilemma and stress I was feeling about the situation. The most important thing to remember, is to clean any wound THOROUGHLY, and with lots of irrigation. Go to the hospital and have them clean it, and abride it if need be, but you don't have to vaccinate. Sheri (moderater) provided me with the rest of the information to change my mind, and put it at rest... " Joanna Hi Joanna, Go to my webpage and show your hubby. http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/tetanus.htm First place, an infant is not going to be exposed to tetanus for the most part - comes from horse manure contaminated something for the most part. Wound care is the best thing you can do to prevent - if there is a wound let it bleed well and wash well with diluted hydrogen peroxide and soapy water (not mixed) Tetanus is SO rare even in unvaccinated There is NO diagnostis test for tetanus so who knows if people that are diagnosed with it really had it or some other poison reaction The vaccine is so reactive/toxic that they have diluted and diluted it so that many people don't even show antibodies to tetanus after the first series (and a little hard to get antibodies to a toxin anyway). But it is still so reactive. I've had 4 people in the last few months write me with serious immune system reactions. So read the webpage for more info Don't talk about vaccines with your OB or any other doctor. And it is often good to not mention to friends and family either! There are others on this list who can tell you their tales! Guest guest
Maybe when someone mentions the internet something(s) like the following could be said? - Oh, yes! Isn't it great how you can access the National Library of Medicine online! I'm sure you must use it, too. And I don't even have to always go to the library to read the articles - sometime the entire journal article, not just the abstract, is available online. This really is the information age! I hear some people in the medical profession don't like the average person to have access to information that used to be available pretty much exclusively to only them. I'm sure you're not like that, though. Make it a point to go to your local library or bookstore to research books and periodicals. Guest guest
Regarding tetanus, I really think the risks of tetanus are wildly exaggerated and here's why: I was brought up in the UK in the 60's when children and adults were not given tetanus shots unless they sustained a deep cut that needed stitches or stood on a nail in a barnyard (e.g. My mother in law had her first shot at age 50+ after a dog bite). Children played outside all the time - more than they do nowadays- and we constantly grazed or cut our knees, elbows etc. If worrying were an Olympic sport my mother would be a medal contender, but I never remember her voicing any concern about tetanus as she patched up my cuts and scrapes. So MILLIONS of people have survived to adulthood without tetanus shots. A pediatrician in the US told me she had seen an Amish boy die of tetanus. On a recent visit to the Amish country I noted that not only do many Amish children live on farms but they walk around these farms barefoot! If tetanus were such a big risk then it would be a miracle if any Amish children survived to adulthood. Remember also that if your child does have a deep dirty wound you can ask for TIG (tetanus immune globulin) to be administered at the ER. Guest guest
My first pediatrician - who was promptly fired - essentially told me, in as many words, that I'd " have my baby's blood on my hands " if I did not have her vaccinated! Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, It is only natural to have your thoughts about vaccines. We all want what is best for our children and for years and years we have been taught what a blessing vaccines are and how they erradicated this disease and that disease. Unfortunately there is much more to it and things are not that simple. I myself almost died when I was given the small pox vaccine as a baby. So I have had reservations against shots from my childhood years and so did my parents. There is no way that you can be certain that the one shot you will give won't hurt your child. In my daughter's case it happened out of the blue. So I am not willing to take any more risks with my other two children. I will just watch them carefully, even more carefully. I will expose them to chicken pox whenever I get the chance and the same goes for Rubella, Mumps or Measles. I am not afraid of these diseases. I had them all with out any complication and I believe that a healthy child won't have any trouble going through these diseases. I have more apprehension when it comes to Pertussis but the shot is no alternative. Tetanus is scary but my husband who is from India never received the shot during his childhood and neither did his sisters or any of their friends. They all grew up unharmed and India is really dirty in comparison to the States. When it comes to HIP the same argument goes for me. I breastfed my children and kept them away from strangers and my book knowledge told me that a child will only get it with a deprived immunity. AND the HIP shot doesn't even work immediately. As far as I remember the " protection " sets in much later at around six months. (Please correct me if I am wrong) That leaves Diphteria which is a scary disease but really not that prevalent in the States either. I trust in God and in my homeopathic counselor and in my own intuition which tells me not to vaccinate. I wish you well and applaud you for already looking into these issues. a.
