Guest guest
Seems like I'm on #49 of hopefully no more than 50 side effects of gleevec. I'm on 400mg, taking in the evenings (diagnosed 10-3-06). I've been having severe muscle cramps especially in my feet and legs. I'm taking potassium, calcium and magnesium. The onc dr prescribed 20 mg of quinnine before bedtime. Anyone else used quinine for muscle spasms? Or anything else that effective? I'd appreciate your comments. Guest guest
Thanks for the info...unfortunately because of nausua I can't eat enough of the right foods to do it naturally and have to take supplements. I'm on 350 mg qunine which I hope helps some. There's no predicting when the muscle cramps will take hold. I wasn't able to drive back home from grocery shopping yesterday because of severe cramps. He took nothing but did stay very physically active during the day so as the muscles would be used for the day. He did take calcium but mostly we have tried to eat the amount of calcium, potassium and iron he needs in a day (really getting tired of pills!) It's fantastic you are taking what your taking (calcium, potassium) but I would suggest eating and extra banana and extra milk a day (or what you like for calcium) Your body may absorb a bit better and its easier on the stomach. Oh as well - tea, coffee (any caffeine) can leach the bones of calcium...so ?? For pain he is taking 292's but really refrains unless massive bone bone (like today)Were you diagnosed Oct or March? (month day year or ??) Will pray for no spasms tonight Margaret! Shalyn Margaret , mpraymond@... margaret-raymond@...
Guest guest
Stacey: The problem with dose reduction of Gleevec is that you take the chance of creating a situation of becoming resistant to the Gleevec. Unfortunately, those of us who have to take this drug, optimum dosage is what is needed to create the best remission. I have found out the hard way that in order to get to best and most long lived remission the starting dose should be 800 mg if you can tolerate it. I couldn't tolerate it and took the lower dose of Gleevec. I am now paying the price as I am resistant to the Gleevec. I have been switched to Sprycel. It has it's own set of problems for me. I have a matched donor and I decided start setting up for a BMT. I guess one of the benefits with the sprycel is I no longer get the horrible muscle spasms. It is just exchanging one set of side effects for another. Try the quinnine. I found the spasms to lessen the longer I was on the Gleevec. In fact, near the end of my using Gleevec. I could take it like it was nothing. The side effects of the drug will lessen the longer you are on it. Hang in there. Guest guest
Gayla, perhaps stopping the calcium and magnesium for a few days would be wise here. Vitamins C and B’s are no problem, as your body will use what it needs and get rid of the extra. Minerals can build up, however, and if you get too much of one it will deplete some others. Potassium, magnesium, and calcium all have the potential to cause excess muscle spasms whether it is from deficiency (rare in the US) or overdose. If you eat plenty of leafy greens you should get plenty of minerals. Have a handful of nuts a day too. My other thought is that your back is adjusting to the way you are walking now. Your hip is different, so your back has to realign itself to your new posture. A good massage or maybe a chiropractor might be in order if we can’t get you more comfortable soon. I have been taking loads of calcium and magnesium since my hip replacement. Plus C and Bs etc. What minerals will cause it? TIA! Guest guest
Janet the weird thing is that DH has the same back symptoms. We eat leafy greens (tender leafy greens a la Don!) daily. Thanks - we will try this. Gayla Always Enough RanchAcampo, Californiahttp://bouncinghoofs.com/alwaysenough.htmlaeranch@... RE: Muscle spasms Yes, and an overdose of minerals can cause them too. I would have to know the history of the person and what they eat and take everyday to get a clearer picture. Some vitamins can cause them as well.
