Vitamin D testing

Although I do not yet know the result I have had a test for vitamin D.

I am not sure that this test however will help as far as whether VITAMIN D is

being converted into its active form first through the liver then through the

kidneys. From what I have gathered this test is expensive, difficult to do and

rarely done, so this is unikely to have been done for me or any of us.

To have VITAMIN D drugs can also become toxic if ones liver and kidneys cannot

convert it into its active form.

I thought that there might be a safer way by using a VITAMIN D lamp, but even

through the skin Vitamin D still has to be converted into its active form.

Has anyone come up against this or have any ideas to offer.

HI HAN

Thanks for this information, all it had on my form was VIT D and the condition

of Myalgia, so I presume they will have done the same test. I did not ask for

the test, the GP decided to have it done. Where do you obtain your VIT D from,

and is there any hopes that it will ease the muscle and joint pain. I am also

thinking of buying a sports bouncy ball to help strengthen the hip and knee

areas, and could help the arms as well. Once you are also taking VIT D3 do they

then keep a check on it.

said that " 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D test " is the most accurate way of measuring

vitamin D levels in the body. He also recommended that I take Vitamin D3 which

is the most active form of vitamin D.

Hi Kathleen

I got my Vitamin D3 from a Co called Health its an Internet company and

I find them very good for vitamins and health and beauty stuff. If you google it

you should find it. I have just started taking Vitamin D so don't know yet about

effects, but I can imagine it will help with bone problems as it is necessary

for the absorption of calcium which is responsible for healthy teeth and bones.

I can imagine that it will be down to me to request a follow up blood test to

check the progress in about 6 months as I can't imagine my GP requesting it!

HI HAN

I don't know if you can eat animal protein, meat and fish, but I can't, but from

what I have gathered calcium in turn helps absorb meat and fish. Meat is also

the best thing for muscle fibres, so maybe in this way it can help ones muscles.

I wonder too if Health would give any advice on what the signs of any

toxicity problems are. I have in the past tried Vitamin D and calcium carbonate

before and ended up doing more and some rather nasty bruises plus upsetting my

stomach. Its unlikely to have been D3 as I have not come across it locally.

Calcium carbonate is high in this area in the water supply and without using a

filter that too can cause bruises to appear.

When you buy vitamins from VH you can read the " more info " bit which should tell

you if there are any side effects - from what I can remember there were none.
